This has been getting some great reviews. It's a DS RPG published by Square and developed by Jupiter, the makers of Kingdom Hearts. The Jet Set Radio-ish art style is what intrigues me.

I would love to pick this up, but I have a hard time swallowing the $40 price tag for a DS game, especially with Mario Kart coming out the next Sunday. I'll probably swallow my pride and go for it once I finish Zelda.

I played the game for about an hour, and my general impressions about the game are good. Though, I did actually laugh at one point because of the insane amount of shit the game asks you to contemplate all at once.
You battle on the top screen by way of d-pad path choosing (left left left left will give one attack, left left up left will give another). You then battle on the bottom screen at the same time (in theory), by different stylus commands. The idea seems to be that you'd get into some kind of flow where you do a combo on the top screen, then on the bottom, and back and forth in quick succession. The reason being is that because some glowy ball thing goes back and forth between the two screens after a combo, increasing your attack power. It's something I've yet to wrap my head around completely, and I've found no flow, if there be one.
It's not without it's problems, but I have a feeling that I'll eventually grow to really enjoy it but I've also got Rondo of Swords, and that is being much nicer to me right now.
All in all it's a slick presentation on top of what seems to be a fairly substantive game.

This is a great game.
The battle mechanics are really interesting and sort of involve a pat-your-head-and-rub-your-stomach sort of duality. As EightBit described, you battle on both the upper and lower screen. Unlike him, I got the hang of the flow. The idea is to do a combo on one screen, then the other, and repeat. There's more to it, though, as you also have to worry about dodging attacks and working out the ESP card order on the top screen - if you can get three symbols in the correct order (each corresponding to one of three attacks), you can do a sync attack that does massive damage to everything.
That's not all, though. You can also adjust your level and the game's difficulty. By voluntarily handicapping yourself with a higher difficulty and/or a lower level, the item drop rate increases and you can get more and better items. It's a great risk/reward mechanic.
To top it all off, the presentation is fantastic. The music is great and the art is wonderful. The only thing I'm not really happy about so far is the story, which is mostly nonsensical and features the usual JRPG doesn't-care-about-anything emoboy protagonist. I'm sure a dissertation on why this type of character is so popular in Japanese games would be fascinating, but that doesn't make the character archetype any less irritating. I hope the plot and characters get more interesting as the game goes on, but the gameplay itself is what is keeping me interested.

Got it yesterday. Everything bVork said is true. Gameplay is absolutely awesome, ridiculously fun, and the stuff about the presentation needs to be repeated over and over because it's insanely good. I don't mind the nonsensical plot so far but the main character really does suck. I can't wait until he inevitably learns the value of teamwork and friendship in a heartwarming ending! Or he dies. Either would be fine.
Played the first day and some of the 2nd. It's really odd at first but clicks after a while.

It's pretty amazing that someone looked at the DS and asked, "how can we make a game that uses every feature the platform offers?" You'd think the answer would be a shambling mess, but thankfully the opposite is true.
Practically everything is scalable and customizable. I love the fact that equipment no longer becomes outmoded at the next item shop. It's great to know some shirt or other piece of "armor" could be even more beneficial based on trends. The way that works with the different difficulties, auto-top-screen play, and level scaling makes for amazing risk/rewards in an already addicting game.
Seriously - The World Ends With You is more inventive than many games in the past 5 years and does so with style. And Neku gets progressively less annoying as the game progresses, so it's all good.
This game is mad dope but I have a bunch of other stuff to get to (tends to happen when you pirate your games :cry:). I love how the missions play out in real time. Like if they tell you that you have an hour to finish a mission you really do have an IRL hour. really cool.
The world ends with you justifies the DSes existence IMO. It's a beautiful 2D game that makes use of all the gimmicks of the DS without actually just using them for the sake of using them.

On topic, how well does fighting on both screens at the same time work in this thing?
You use the DPAD for the top and the touch screen for the bottom, two things at once so it takes a little bit to get the hang of and your eyes will constantly shift back and forth to see what's going on.
At first you can let the top auto attack, but you'll eventually die that way.
Combat at top is as simple as hitting a string of buttons, like left, left up, left left, or similar.

Yeah, this game is fantastic, and honestly the story isn't really terrible at all Making you go through the second loop for Shiki was really smart on their part and makes you genuinely concerned about winning. Though Joshua could be a little bit less obviously malignant. But I guess from the rest of the game subtlety isn't the style.

Well, it's not a square game. It's by Jupiter, it's just published by Square. They're the EA of Japan.
But a lot of square games are unique. I Mean FFXII may have been a final fantasy, but it's still a unique game.
I figured Jupiter was just a Square team or something.
And yeah, I liked FF12. It's an exception.
honestly though other than being Final Fantasy, name two final fantasies that don't change things a bit. Ok I don't know about Crystal Chronicles.

so yeah, beat this today, and yeah, pretty much didnt think i would be saying this about a portable game, but this actually is game of the year contender for me. Seriously, every single part fell into place perfectly on this one.
Except for the constant shitty dialogue and some boring tasks that aren't optional. The impressive battle system and style make it stand out. It's definitely quality but not the 9/10 game many reviews label it as. It just sticks out because JRPGs have been in a rut this past gen and it's better than most.Quote:

I think playing Planescape Torment again earlier this year has been reducing my enjoyment of other RPGs lately. I want that kind of depth for story and gameplay.
how far are you in? the more I learned, the more i enjoyed it, the final boss' motivations made the great game amazing for me, and the final choice just kicked it into the stratosphere. plus, what you have to do after beating it knocked it that much higher. so yeah, having played through a hell of a lot of rpg's i cant remember a better overall story(and that includes morrowind..gasp). It could be me, maybe i over-identify with characters and events in the game, though i dont recall being a 15 year old misanthrope or a skateboarding chav. :P
I'm in the middle of Week 2. I don't remember exactly where I stopped. It was at least a couple weeks ago the last time I played it.
ah yeah, joshua eventually makes sense in context, but he's weak compared to shiki, has that scanner thats not really explained well, and you will get some frustrating fights with him, plus his initial personality makes him pretty obnoxious. I can see people dropping the game after being saddled with joshua for the first few days, but he grows in a way that actually makes him really interesting from a story perspective, and his levitate combos make him a lot stronger gameplay wise.
The game really sags in week 2, but after you start getting Josh's abilities; The cam and the levitate he becomes the best of the 3.

I don't get this game. Are there any advantages to doing different combos with Shiki in the top screen? Since one of them is Right, Right, Right, Right, I just spam either Right or Left while working on the Neku combat. It's usually good for an A or B rank. Is there a reason not to do this?

It's been a while, but don't Shiki's combos end in cards and there's some matching game that can be used to build up for combo attacks? The only real reason to pay attention is to build that up sooner, rather than let chance dictate how useful spamming right or left is.
I despise the top screen combat in this game. Mostly because it's stupid, distracting and it needlessly complicates things. ..but I feel like I'm missing out on something by turning on autopilot so I'd rather just bitch about it on TNL.

The adjustable...everything in the game is nice. Like how characters can get specific stat boosts from eating on top of leveling up. Or like how the forms of experience are applied to pins. Or like how fashion plays a functional role. Call it crazy but I never liked the economical waste of upgrading in other RPGs. To buy gear that only becomes obsolete at the next town. At least in The World Ends With You, there are enough perks for each piece of "armor" and the rating of brands in each district help keep your inventory relevant.
Finally got around to playing this tonight. Presentation/art/music are all tops. Story is interesting. Main character is the brand of angsty emotrash that once upon a time would have annoyed me; I'm now desensitized to the point of not giving a shit.
Top screen combat is dumb. Since you can either PRTW or leave it on auto-pilot, and it's distracting as hell, I don't even mess with it. Pin system is great, though, and it's fun to use to stylus to fling cars at giant wolves. My OCD will probably compel me to max out every pin, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Yeah this is probably the only DS game i've ever 100%ed. Once you beat the game and start collecting the little notes that add to the story you won't be able to stop.
This game is brilliant -- possibly the best game on DS -- although I'm ashamed to admit I've come nowhere close to finishing it.
Didn't S-E's head honcho publicly castigate Jupiter for TWEWY's non-Final Fantasy sales figures? Basically reassuring investors that those responsible for this daring, inventive game would be dealt with. It was pretty depressing.

Probably? Why on earth "probably"? I bought it when it came out, the non-green stripe version is sitting on a shelf in the other room.
My only point is I still don't get the achievement thing. They're kinda nice, in a way, but a proper translation would provide far more value to FFT than any achievements would. Also, while developers are free to charge what they want, I can't picture spending more than $10 on an iOS game.

There is a proper translation. It's the PSP version. The iOS one uses the same translation.
