Eating out isn't supposed to be about convenience for you, it's about experiencing someone's interpretation of dishes. If they put onions in there, perhaps it's to add some sweetness to balance the flavor profile. You asking for the dish without them is fucking the whole thing up and making the line put out food they're not proud of. Yeah asshole, I'm proud of the food I make and the job I do.
