GTAIV is getting a lot of 10's in reviews. Is it really a huge step forward for GTA?
I think it's clearly the fact that gamers as a whole have lowered their expectations. The game is good, but is it really a 10/10? There are plenty of flaws in this game.
The only game I would ever give a 10/10 to was SMB3.
It's a good game, from what I've played of Tain's I like it. But 10/10 is just bullshit hype.
People will be bored with it in a few weeks maybe a month.
10/10 for making a new thread topic for this while the GTA4 thread is still lit up like Christmas.
I agree Thief. GOW is still getting played a ton by my buddies online and it's what, a year or so old now? I don't expect the same here.
People who only play offline games will probably be playing it for the next two years, or however long it takes for a sequel to hit.
There are a lot of those people, for some reason.
Good game, but it's a step backwards in too many ways for me to even consider it a 10/10 game.
Let me rephrase by I think TNL will only be playing it for a few more weeks. Every now and then Chux will be like "Hey niggers, let's play some GTA4 online" and they will. But once TNL stops playing I generally stop caring.
Personally I think VC was really the game to compare IV to.
SA just did a lot of out there things because it had nothing new to bring to the table: jet pack, monster trucks, wilderness and some crazy missions about aliens and such. VC on the other hand took all the good things from III and then added in meaningful additions like the helicopters and motorcycles.
Not to mention that the world, characters, music and story of VC was better than both III and SA.
That being said I think GTA IV is the best game in the series by a large margin.
i am already bored. Im like 20% into story? ugh.
I did more coop mission today, eh theyre ok, but not blowing my mind.
the only worthwhile anything in this game is free mode. Where i can say "hey wouldnt it be cool/funny if we did this?" then you go do it everyone LOLs and you think of something else.
but eventually that dies down.
Add to that now rockstar is 0/2 on major releases not having fatal game crashing bugs.
GTA IV is definitely my favourite game in the series, ousting Vice City. The improved controls, the more logical implementation of side things like vigilante missions and import/export, and the even greater freedom in how to approach missions is what pushes it over the top. Not only are you given a lot of leeway in how to accomplish a mission (something I think that SA really lacked), but you can sometimes choose the final outcome. That's what makes GTA IV so amazing - freedom that extends even to the storyline. Speaking of which, the plot is definitely the best in the series and one of the best I have ever seen in a videogame.
But there's no such thing as a flawless game. GTA IV does have issues, like minor pop-in and still clunky melee, but it does so many things right that I really do think it deserves a 10/10.
I voted "Good!". It's a nice, shiny coat of paint Rockstar has painted the GTA formula with, but hardly revolutionary. I'm completely addicted to this kind of game anyway, though, so I'm hardly complaining.
So far I'm liking GTA:SA better simply because of the variety of terrain. I loved tooling around the mountain in SA, not to mention the back country roads. I just wish there had been more to do in all that terrain rather than it simply being filler.
My opinion of GTAIV might still go up. I've managed two crash-free days of playing in a row and am shooting for three, so as I open up more map and see what else is available I expect things to pick up. So far, though, GTAIV is a nice upgrade in tech from the previous gen and little more.

I'll give it a 9 simply of the tremendous amount of details put into LC. All these little touches and things really make you feel like living in NYC. I should know, I live in Brooklyn hehe. But I don't see as many hookers on the street than LC....
I didn't vote and haven't played all that much (fucking NHL playoffs) but:
Why can't I beat the shit out of someone and take their wallets (ie... $$$)? This alone is really, really bugging me.
I like it and think there's a lot of replay value (the multiplayer will probably die off really quick for the TNL crew though). Most people as it's been said will focus a lot more on the single-player.
Haoh: You can - just walk outside your door and mug em. Make sure you conceal your identity though. :p
You can. Different people in different areas carry different amounts in money. For best results, hang around by an ATM and mug somebody after they use it.
I vote Good. It takes big steps forward in storytelling, graphics, and presenting a world that feels real and "alive", but also takes a quantum leap backwards in the all-important "miscellaneous crap to do on the side" department.
Well, I've only been playing for about five hours, so this isn't the most accurate viewpoint of the game as a whole, but so far, I think it's better than past GTAs as far as making the game's universe seem real due to the increased detail in the buildings and the environment as a whole, and the NPC actually behaving somewhat like real people.
However, hand-to-hand combat is worse than it's ever been - it's more limiting (so far anyway, I've only played for about five hours total, so I'm not sure if more attacks are available later), and it seems like there's a small delay from when you press the attack button to when you see the attack on-screen.
There are also some little things that bug me - the GPS directions appearing way too small on the screen - after playing Saints Row, which marked them clearly, this seems like a step back for sandbox games. I also enjoyed the car customization feature in SA (which was furthered in Saints Row), and miss it here.
One reason I might not be as impressed with GTA IV is that I've gotten so used to Saints Row, which improved on a lot of things that were issues in the GTAs, that this just doesn't seem like that big a step forward. Sure, it's better looking than Saints Row, but I can't say that it's better playing just yet. I like Saints Row's targeting system better, and find it easier to drive in that game as well.
Here, driving is hurt by Rockstar trying to make the cars behave in a more "realistic" manner, which doesn't always jive with the missions (in particular, the chase mission), which have you driving in unrealistic ways. It's as if Rockstar just decided to make things more realistic without thinking about how it would affect the game.
Nice, but just window dressing.Quote:

Really, really important. I've gotten used to the driving, but the hand to hand isn't even as fun as in Bully. Fortunately I do most of my killing with guns or, even better, cars.Quote:

RoleTroll must be burning up inside that a Nintendo game isn't getting 10s across the board.
It's the best GTA and the cars are fine. Better even. There's bigger difference from the lowest to highest tier.
Also, better characterization and cutscenes and the best voice acting in a game ever. Maybe.
everything about this one blows the last 3 out of the water
So far GTA IV gets a big "meh" from me and I don't think I want to play it any more. The 10/10s I'm sure are for the most part genuine but this is not a game to be played, this is a game to be watched or experienced because it's the actual gameplay that is driving me away. I'd rather watch someone else play this than play it myself. I can't complain; I should have stuck with my original stance and not fallen for the hype.
And conversely, just because there's hype doesn't mean it's not an incredible game.
I've been playing the game, all they did was slap a new coat of paint on it and add some basic features that could have been pulled off on the PS2 if they had thought of them at the time.
I give it an 7/10 single player and 9/10 multiplayer. I in no way hate the game, i just don't think it's the best game EVER.
Only people having their spinal chords injected full of dopamine by Rockstar while playing this game think it's the best game ever.
Damnit, i knew I should have bought the special edition..
The basic features of nearly every game could be pulled off last generation had they thought of them at the time. But they didn't, and the features are new now and add a whole lot to the game as a whole. I in no way think it's "the best game evar", but you must be blind if you don't think R* didn't add a ton as far as gameplay features and mechanics go.
If you want to see a game with a new coat of paint, look at Rainbow Six Vegas vs Rainbow Six Vegas 2. GTA4 just doesn't fit the bill of "a new coat of paint only".
See, not true Brand. For instance when metal gear solid came out, it was revolutionary. It was unable to to accurately portrayed on the last gen systems.
Actually, many of the gameplay mechanics from MGS were pulled off in the Game Boy version of Metal Gear. Which was a 10+ year old piece of hardware. They just weren't thought of until MGS was released.
Mario 64 could not have been done on the super nintendo.
Again, many of the gameplay mechanics from Mario 64 were ripped directly from previous mario games. They were just visually brought into a different dimension. Obviously many things aren't possible, like doing 3d on a 2d system, but that isn't a core gameplay mechanic, which is what this entire "argument" is about. Like ep said, if you break down a game to it's bare essentials, they are all possible on previous systems. Which is why saying "WELL THIS COULD BE DONE IN THE LAST GENERATION" is a ridiculous argument.
But this entire conversation is getting away from the main point I was trying to make. Just because things were possible on a previous generation of systems doesn't mean they are any less of a significant addition to GTA4 which is a current generation game.
Didn't the devs say earlier that the "98% of buildings are empty facades" thing would be lessened and there would be a lot more indoor environments? Whatever happened to that? It seems like there's even less than usual.
I'm having a good time with the game and all, especially now that I'm further in and there's tons of missions to take at any given time, but it's not really much of a leap at all.
Especially the controls, no game with combat like this deserves a 10, let alone one that's had the benefit of several prior installments to address such an obvious and fundamental problem.
As I stated before the hand to hand is this game is akin to me shooting myself in the face with a bb gun. It's just irksome that my bad ass dude get's beat on by chicks.
The hand-to-hand sucks, but it's no longer needed once you whip out a gun. I voted great. I loved all the little details that went into the game.
Yeah, it's kind of amazing how bad the hand to hand is. It seems like they put a lot of thought into it, but the execution is just shit.
Yep.
you only need to use hand to hand/melee like 2 or 3 times in the entire game, it should practically be a non-issue (but I can sort of understand the disappointment in it)
the two I know about being the tutorial mission for fisticuffs (I count both fights there) and one later on where you beat on a thug for information in a mission for Francis
Hit button, wait, hit button, wait. Get hit, hit button.
People that dont love this game are retarded
I'm with you on MGS, but Mario 64 plays absolutely nothing like previous Mario games. It's impossible to turn a traditional platformer into a 3D game without fundamentally changing it.Quote:

I'll give it a 9/10 as I wish there were some more things implemented and yeah there's a bit of texture pop up every now and again, but by the by this is the best GTA and what I envisioned 9 years ago when I was playing the original on the computer. At the time MP wasn't even a consideration, but finally having it makes the game that much better since every mode I've tried has been nothing but nonstop fun. And the missions are freaking awesome, first time in a GTA game where I actually cared to progress through the story.
No way man, Vice City had an awesome story.
It did nothing for me. I was bored of it within 10 missions.
VC was boring. The city was dull, flat, and not much fun to explore. I liked Tommy Vercetti, but Lance's transformation into whiny bitch just didn't work.
James
VC is essentially every organized crime movie jammed into 1 story. Some of the Characters are basically ripped straight from movies, like your lawyer friend, who is basically the lawyer from Carlito's Way. Was still cool though.
GTA IV is a great improvement overall. The general gameplay mechanics are largely the same, but hey, its a sequel. People complaining about the cars are either retarded or exagerating, The handling is not all different from the previous games, just slightly tweeked so that a compact drives like a compact and a muscle car drives like a muscle car.
The addition of multiplayer is reason enough for this to be yards better than its predecessors. It reminds me of playing GTA1 over LAN back in the day.
Basically, if you don't like GTA this will not change your mind, as it is afterall a GTA game. The world is much more immersive and the characters are more fleshed out, which combined with multiplayer make this game a fantastic buy for any fans of the series.
People get caught up in the cool of GTA and forget that as a game it's almost entirely a failure in every way. Every aspect of the game is halfass from the driving to the controls to the gun play to the camera. I enjoy GTA but am under no illusion that they're great games.
San Andreas was much better by the way.
A game is about enjoyment and people enjoy fucking around in GTA games a great deal.
dude you are crazy there is no way that GTA:SA is better, that whole "thug nasty, gangsta wiky scratch yo-yo bang bang" thing was old and lame after about 15 minutes. Just another jab at negative stereotypes. That shit is so annoying (IMO)
or maybe its just me, i just thought that "SA" was a total waste of time.
I love the online play in this new one, i just got done playing it a few minutes ago and i wouldnt have stopped if i didnt have to go to work in the AM
I love GTA 4, but I did expect more in terms of gameplay after playing Saints Row.
Meh, my impressions are here.
It's sold out everywhere in Denmark. I went to 8 stores... EBgames charges a meaty $125 US for it. :/
HAY GUIZE. GTA SUXXORZ. OLOLOLO
Also, the top 37 people on the Xbox Live Leaderboard all have IV in their last five played games.
Also (very off-topic now), why does that EvilMog guy have twin entries at the top? I don't like it. I don't like it one bit.
This is the first GTA game I've played, and I'm about 6 hours into it right now.
Some of the random things, like getting drunk and then going for a drive, are really fun to mess around with. However, the storyline doesn't seem to be going anywhere and I don't feel like I'm progressing in the game. All I've done so far is drive here, kill some dude/steal some shit, drive back, rinse and repeat for 6 hours. Do the missions ever become more varied? If its just 20 more hours of this, I'm not sure if I'll keep the game
I agree with what everyone else says too, there are a variety of gameplay elements but none of them are executed very well. I didn't mind that the driving was slightly realistic, at first, but it becomes very tedious when I have to restart missions. In short, the driving just isn't as fun as it should be. Hand to hand combat is absolutely useless, so I use guns most of the time, but even targeting with guns can be a pain in the ass.
Again, as this is my first GTA game, I'm not sure how much longer this game is supposed to be. I can say though, that I'm already over the novelty of running around the game's world just to do stupid shit and the main story line isn't doing anything for me; basically I'm bored of what the game has to offer already.
So far, I'd give this a 6/10. The open ended nature of the game is as brilliant as it should be, but everything you do in the world just seems tedious. I don't normally play these open ended "criminal sand box" games, but so far the only one I've liked is "True Crime: Streets of L.A."....and I know that game isn't even that good. LOL.
I actually liked the goofy Bosses towards the end of True Crime. Its just one of the aspects that spiced up the game and kept it from getting too tedious. I know a lot of people hate on that game (its certainly not without its share of faults), but I really enjoyed if from beginning to end. So, I'm hoping that GTA IV will start to get better soon...
This is the first GTA game that I've actually enjoyed this long, but it's still not great. No way in hell is it a 10/10.
I'd say 7/10 range.
yea i dont think i'd give it a 10/10 either, but it is fun to fuck around with
You all have to play until the mission that recreates the movie Heat, and hopefully to the mission that has you chasing a gay basher on a faggio around Central Park.
