If Doom 3 = Doom 1, pls let Doom 4 = Doom 2.
I didn't care about this franchise at all until Doom3, which ruled all with an iron fist. It ended up being one of my favorite games of all time.
I don't see part 4 being released before 2010 though.
I don't understand how anyone enjoyed Doom 3. Monsters spawning in already cleared areas is not scary. It is annoying.
Pussy. I guess you've never played Nightmare mode.
Will the 360 version of Doom 4 come with a patch that allows the Xbox Doom 3 and Resurrection load in less than a week?
If not, no sale.
Oh, storyline. lol.
I loved Doom 3. Fucking brilliant played in the dark with some good headphones or a nice sound system, especially the first time out.
Oh, so there were scripted events? In a game? Noooooo.
I hope Doom 4 loses the ceiling and gets you in some urban (Earth) environments.
I'd feel dirty breathing these words with Compass, but YellerDog is here to, so:
I like Doom 3.
This is great news. I've loved all of the Doom games.
Doom 3 was pretty good. Bunch of whiny overreactions toward it for playing nothing like the old games.
Fuck the haters of Doom 3. It looked amazing on my new computer when it came out, plus it was a metric fuck ton of fun. Then running through the game in online co-op with Opaque made it even better.
Gotta spawn somewhere.
Then turn off that flashlight, bay-bee. Let it happen... in the dark.
If you couldn't get into that game the first time out, I don't know what to tell you.
it was a by the number fps. not much to "get into". it didn't do anything wrong....it just didn't do anything OMG right/NEW!. keep in mind i have played probably 90% of PC fps.
Atmosphere-wise, it's in the top % as far as I'm concerned.
It was doing a lot more "new" in that area than most games that weren't Half-Life 2 (which still plays like Half-Life 1, unfortunately --but I digress).
I liked the survival horror aspect of it, and the loneliness, much like Alien.
See... now D4 should be like Aliens with massive action and colossal hordes descending upon the clusterfuck of Earth.
Ran like shit on my Imac G5. It was tolerable on xbox tho.
That's becuase you got the Islam port.
The point!
huuhhhhh.Quote:
and doom 3 plays just like doom 1 and 2.
I don't remember outdoor areas with 20+ enemies in Doom 3.
New to Doom 3 =
Extremely immersive sound design, fancy new rendering techniques. Building a world around the character and making the player feel "in" that world = atmosphere, holmes. Something lacking the genre up to that point, and pretty rare still.
Come on, really?Quote:
you point at things and shoot.
Sins of a Solar Empire and Herzog Zwei are pretty much the same game.
You can jump. Can't do that in Halo.
dyne sees the truth, guys, and it's like totally his opinion so don't discuss
Oh wait. Can you jump in Halo? I haven't played it in a long while.
EDIT: OK so you can jump in Halo. Can't jump in Doom 2.
like, VF slow.
The backstory with all the little easter egg emails you don't care about keeps it from being a cheap date.
That shit's optional anyway. Game version of "disc two" DVD extras, take it or leave it.
(I too, detest story in games.)
anyway, we need some pics of this shit already.
i was actually hoping they were getting back on the Wolfenstein train again personally.
??? Then go play Halo and get out of this thread.Quote:

Holy shit, that was bad.
You should. It's all game play.
The Marine wakes up in Mecca donning a shirt with the portrait of the Profit Muhammad on it.
All the PDA's say "durka durka durka".
None of Imps can sneak up on you becuase you can hear the alalalalalalalalalalalalala a mile a way.
During Hajj? Would make the most awesome gaming level ever. Ever since it was occupied in 1979, security has been TIGHT. Towers with snipers and elite guards behind every corner. Even if you survive, you still gotta plough through millions of angry worshippers.
I'm still waiting for a current-gen FPS to be able to display as many enemies on-screen as Doom 1 & 2 did. I want to fight 20 or 30 Imps at once, not 1 or 2.
Serious Sam was pretty awesome, even if it had more to do with Robotron than Doom.
I thought doom 3 was scary as shit. The only fps since that I have enjoyed since that was Gears, if thats really an fps.
Quake 3 is still my favorite though.
We need to think of a cool abrv for fps that sounds like shmups.
like kllems.
Hey, better yet, we could call them shmups to piss off Grave AND confuse people.
I fully support Grave's crusade against the term shmup.
And hopefully Doom 4 will be more than just an average FPS with a fancy new engine. That's all Doom 3 was.
I concede.
you just swing that big set of nuts my way any chance you get huh slugger? get a fucking hobby.
i've heard people say that about you.
they weren't women
Tbh I liked the Final Doom on Playstation 1. Nothing beats coming home from a long day of work, getting down and firing up the PS1 and mindlessly shooting Demons for hours upon end.
Doom 1 and 2 were good shit, Doom 3 was incredibly boring and not worth the time I spent playing it. Hopefully Doom 4 is nothing like Doom 3.
My computer took it in the ass when trying to play Doom 3. I couldn't take it anymore and just stopped playing past when the monsters started first appearing.
Sucks when that happens. My rule of thumb with PC games is typically this: buy a new PC once every five years or so (for freelance work nowadays), make it a good one, and catch up on the previous five years' games. Hasn't failed me yet. Upgrading video cards just to play "newest-hottest" is for chumps (or friends of mine, heh).
If that's your thing though, have a blast.
Xbox Doom 3 isn't halfway bad though, even with Turkey Puncher missing from single player.
I don't play enough PC games to constantly have to upgrade. The only one I still play is SC and I've been able to play that shit in any PC I've owned in the last eight years.
Doom 3 was ok, pretty at the time but i didn't like the feel of the game. I just think they forgot what doom was, a fucking action packed nutfuck of enemies you gotta take down in generally well lit areas, ridiculous amounts of gore as you mow down demons and zombie marines one by one, not some suspense driven moody shit. It had a gun called the BFG, one of the main monsters was bright pink, it was not subtle or story driven in the least, bar a few paragraphs at the end of each episode. Why didn't they just name doom 3 something else. Serious Sam plays more like a doom sequel than doom 3 does.
SUSPENSEFUL!
loooool
I had a blast with Doom 3. Over the top 'jump-out' scares and cool looking demons. That's all I wanted, and it delivered. Co-op ruled too.
Hey, remember this?
It's not going well.
Between this and Prey 2 ZeniMax hasn't been having much luck lately.
Well, that's probaly it for id because Carmack has other interests and he can make money doing other things.
But I still wish they would make a simpler high res Doom 4 with old school mechanics (or even a low res one like Mega Man 9/10 or that other Fantasy Zone, that'd be really cheap). No reason to spend 50 million when you could make something high def at a tenth of that.
Well Carmack is just the tech guy, really, which isn't the problem.
id was the Two Johns. Without them, the company is totally irrelevant. Even with them, it might be, but at least there was SOMETHING
The other John left after Quake 1 and hasn't done shit worth shit since so I don't know about that.
That remake of Doom 1 with the Doom 3 engine was great. I'd buy a full three episode (or four, if you count Final) remake.
I think it with id, it wasn't so much who they lost and who they gained. They just got too huge. It's different than when you have a company of like 7 people.
Reinstalled this. It's still awesome.
Doom 3 has really limited resolution defaults and doesn't detect shit, so I have to command line my resolution in? I had forgotten about that. BFG edition probably doesn't have that issue but it also apparently doesn't support that mod, so oh well.
Yeah, you can do custom resolutions and FOV settings with a config file. You can probably do it at the command line as well.
They developed Doom 4 for three years without anyone from management taking a peek at what they were doing? Is shit like this commonplace in the games industry? That sounds crazy to me, especially for such a high-profile project.
I really don't get the game industry some times. It's almost as if some of these people don't actually know how to make games. I know games are becoming more complex to make and I know absolutely nothing about programming, but wouldn't it be wise to come up with a sound strategy/plan before you spend millions of dollars and several years instead of turning out a mess only to scrap it and start over completely?
Sometimes you do all the work and it's just not as good as you thought it would be. Or your plans turned out to be unrealistic so it needs to be revised on the fly.
iD's strength has never been management, but in any creative pursuit you're not going to finish where you thought you would when you started.
Film is the same way. You could start out with a great script but end up with shit.
