Every series has one or a few where you get a good game then one of them comes out and sucks.
Super Mario Bros 2.
Mortal Kombat 4
Virtua Fighter 3
Those are just some off the top of my head.
What others ones can you think of?

SMB2 and VF3 are far from sucking. They fit in with the other games just fine.
Internet forums have black sheep, too.
Haunted Castle sucks for 2d Castlevania games. SMB2 is great, though.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It's a complete snooze-fest compared to III or SA.

I'd take SMB2 over the original SMB any day of the week.
I wish Nintendo would do another game in the SMB2 world. FREE WART AND THE SHYGUYS!
The two other famous black sheep are Metroid II and Zelda II. I like both games a lot. I played through Zelda II again a couple of years ago on that Gamecube Zelda collection disc, and still had a great time with it. Metroid II's premise of hunting Metroids on their home planet was great, but it suffers a lot now without an auto-map feature.
The NFL Blitz/Hitz "Pro" games:
Midway took two great arcade sports franchises and tried to turn them into pussyfooted simulations of their respective sports.
Zelda II is the Zelda game that I keep finding myself drawn back to play and I get urges at random times.
Devil may Cry 2, easily one of the most disappointing games ever, dino crisis 2 is the white sheep in that series if that counts.
EDIT: forgot metal slug 4, which is just a fucking mess on all counts.
Baseball Stars 2
You can close this thread now!
Golden Axe 3.
Phantasy Star III
silent hill:the room. wasn't supposed to be a silent hill even, i dunno, i thought it kept the feel of the series at least.
VF3 is actually quite good, it just gets negative press in the West because people have no idea how to play it. It's the pioneer of useful 3D movement, varied 3D environments with true gameplay impacts and advanced option select. Looking back, it's much better of a sequel than 5 is.
DMC2 does suck, I would lump Onimusha 2 with that as well.
Too late. DOKI DOKI PANIC DESU DESU
Metal Slug 4
Anything after Metal Slug 3 is for assholes.
VI is not bad.
But 4 is absolutely the shittiest in the series. It is like eating dog shit after having a filet mignon that is 3.
Contra on the PS1.
Gradius III Arcade... possibly also Gradius IV.
Final Fantasy VIII
Sonic and Knuckles
King of Fighters 99
Final Fantasy VII (complete dog shit)
Front Mission 3
Mighty Final Fight
FirePro GBA (no manage the ring mode)
I liked Mighty Final Fight when it was called "River City Ransom".
Speaking of that
River City Ransom EX
Really? I heard good things.
Soul Calibur 3 - exclusive to the worst console it could have been exclusive for, rubbish create-a-character and srpg modes, really bad QTE's. Gameplay proper isn't too far off from SC2/SC, but the additions didn't make it a better game by any stretch.
Sounds like you should just skip getting the repeater kick, then.
Life Force
Knuckles Chaotix.
Knuckles Chaotix is pretty great.
Knuckles Chaotix need to have more than one or two enemies per stage.
LOL
Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter was so unlike the generic jRPG series it came from that it was generally panned by fans.
Of course, what's bad for them is good for gamers as Capcom took a risk on making a strategic turn-based games that required more thought than simply selecting "Attack" over and over from a menu.

Front Mission 3
Every Front Mission except Front Mission 3.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Oh I don't know, could it be the added story elements, integrated party system, createable characters, massively advanced moveset, customizable special/boss moveset(s), fully fledged juggle system, alternative dialog depending on party members, etc?
Meh, still doesn't capture the awesome that was the original.
Wait, so you're bitching because a remake doesnt capture the awesome that was the original? Now I think I've seen it all.
Also, to say that this game deserves to be on a "BLACK SHEEP" list because of your aforementioned statement? That's absolutely retarded.
Double Dragon advanced was good - but all it did was add more useless weapons, a running attack that made the game SUPER easy, and agent smith clones.
However, after Rosetta Stone and Double Dragon V there's only one way to go, no matter how bad the remake could've been.
Truth.
I wish they would have released the spiritual succesor in Japan instead of what we got though (RCR)
I wish your mom would have released her spiritual successor instead of what we got (you)
OOOO, BIFF IS TNLS BLACKSHEEP
That makes no sense.
I like Technos Samurai. It's very "blinky" on most emulators, though.
I think RCR is a lot more fun, as a consequence.
edit: Wait, so you're saying you would have rather had the Famicom game over the GBA RCR EX? Buhuhwah?
That Daytona game for Dreamcast is a fucking disgrace.
Oh yeah, good point. And the first VF on the 32x as well.
VF for 32X is better than the Saturn port in a lot of ways.
Those 2D Virtua Fighter games are pretty mediocre, though.
I'm gonna have to nominate the american saturn release of Fighting Vipers.
No skirtless honey, no pepsi-man, no good. That game (and pepsi-man in particular) was the catalyst for modding my Saturn when I was 15.
On that token, the PSX rev of X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Egh.
Turrican 3. They turned a unique meld of Contra and Metroid into a straight run-n-gun. Still a great game, but it lacks the aspects that made the prior Turrican games really stand out.
Back when all I could do was rent games, this game was rented possibly 6 times over the years. While the arcade original was one of my favorites at the time, I thought the game held up well and it provided me with many hours of fun (if not also frustration).
Have to agree with this completely.
Before I met an MvC machine, this and KI were my two favorite arcade games bar none. The PSX version was one of the biggest let downs of my gaming life.
I dunno about anyone else, but I always felt Donkey Kong Country 3 was the absolute low point of that series. The first one started off great, the second was still fun but not as good imo, but I couldn't even power through half of the third before I stopped giving a shit about what happened.
PSX XvsSF made me buy a Saturn and a RAM cart. Everything was much better after that. :D
DKC lost me the second you couldn't play as Donkey Kong anymore.
On the PC side of things....
Battlefield:Vietnam: Coming off the heels of BF 1942 came this piece of shit with a GREAT backdrop. There were many nice little touches in the game (mostly from movies), but the game was HORRIBLY unbalanced from the beginning and the Desert Combat mod came out and shit all over it.
I would KILL to see a Battlefield game set in the Vietnam era done right with the new Frostbite engine. Keep the music and little touches from the old game and expand on it.
Some of the maps were cool to play in B:V but man, it was pretty crappy. It was made by the B-team, Digital Illusions Canada wasn't it? I think they also put together that first BF2 expansion.
