most private label stuff is manufactured by the same companies that make the brand names. when retailers get sufficient market power they essentially strong-arm manufacturers to make the same crap with a different label. manufacturers would obviously prefer everyone to buy their fancy brand name products but they'd rather pick up that cheaper private label product instead of their competitors.
wal-mart for one has private label out the ass, but it's not called wal-mart, it's usually "sam's choice." private label stuff is often placed up high or down low to divert consumer attention to the more expensive stuff.
I saw you Thief!

Buying brand name food is just flat out stupid. No exceptions. None.
choosy moms choose JOSH
Nomi, I use Skippy Natural peanut butter, it's pretty cheap. 3.50 for whole wheat? I pay about 2.00 at Walmart for 7 grain whole wheat bread. I do eat some expensive food but you can eat great for cheap. Pasta, brown rice, chicken breasts, pasta sauce, frozen veggies are all great stuff. I don't do the organic thing except for eggs; I think the organic eggs taste better (might be in my head). You have to build a good stockpile of basics first though. Don't you live with people, you guys should pool your money for better food.
Sam's choice Bread is the best bread I have ever eaten. Josh is right though, no name is cheaper. When you live alone you start to see this.
Also: sales and double coupons.
We split costs on chicken breast when we make curry, but that's about it. We don't often agree on things and with 6 different schedules it's very hard to coordinate one time when multiple people are hungry/not at work. I bought a bunch of spices for one specific curry, and we have some good rice, but that's about it as far as community food goes.
That and none of us can actually cook.
