With the price of gas eating a hole straight through me, it's high time I bought a bike. I only live 3 miles from work, so it's fucking stupid to drive my car every day. The problem is I've never bought a bike before, and there's no way in hell I'm buying a new one from some high-priced shop.
I really want to get an older/vingtage road bike set up for commuting. I'm 5'11" and weight about 175, so what do I look for? What size bike do I need to get?

You can get a cheap, good bike with street tires for about $100, less if you knock the rust off of a used one.

Every single accessory you can possibly buy will be $30 each. I have no idea why that is.
Get one of those cruiser bikes if you can.
The kind of bike where your back is straight when you ride them. Mountain bikes are mostly for riding stable off road. The thing is that your back is leaning forward on your arms instead of on your tuchas where it belongs. Yeah they are more stable but thats only needed if your going through a forest full of angry rocks and bears that throw rocks at you. You know like in those Mountain Dew commercials.
If you realy want to get a mountain bike then by all means. But cruiser bikes are more comfy for a commute.
I'm looking for a bike too. Gymkata ... those cruiser bikes, can you change gears like a mountain bike? I mean where I live here in SNJ. I have to go up and down hills and shit.
I don't want to spend anymore than 200 bucks and I don't give a shit about fancy accessories, except for fenders. I'm not to keen on the big mud stripe up my back when it rains. Craigslist has a ton of vintage road bikes, but of course they all have conflicting information, and I just need to know what frame size would fit me correctly.
Go to a bike shop and ask advice, get fitted, and tell them you'll come back after you think on it for a while. They will give you the right size and type of bike to buy, and you can just go buy it elsewhere.
