I'm still of the mindset that "An Inconvenient Truth" glossed over something that scientists are still debating the validity of as honest to goodness truth. Since it shows up in a movie theater with a lot of Hollywood to help promote, it makes digesting science all that more entertaining - no matter how suspect the information is.
Given that, I still think that humanity by and large could do with striving for more efficient ways of accomplishing things. Not because the sky is falling or we're doomed if we don't make radical changes right now, but because progress is progress is progress. Treating the world better little by little whatever the motivation is still a good thing, just like striving for newer technologies and solutions is.
(PS - Nick, I totally didn't read your first post right. I'm all about a representive democracy for its practicality. I thought you were making a different argument than you really were)
