I really like the idea of some Adventures of So and So member(s) in Such and Such Land feature. That could be entertaining.

irregular features = a metal podcast by weeman followed immediately by a music podcast by Josh, Arjue and PaCrappa, in which they respond.
yeah, all while the Ramones play and then Arjue gives poker advice.
My Captain Kirk shirt is too big. :(
damnit get fat again for this role, we need you on it.
BTW, you would have been proud of me, I spent 45 minutes on Friday defending William Shatner as the best actor of our generation to a bunch of stuffy dicktards. They think I'm legit crazy and fear me now.
How about you buy me a new captain kirk shirt, moneybags.
Link pls
Josh is having his shirt delivered, broadcast forthcoming.
Don't come to TNL.
Here's the basic concept: The site is "Entertainment for gamers." It doesn't have to 100% stick to gaming, but it does have to stick with the gamer demo.
I have to insist that we have a monthly Josh show where he tries awesome shit like degaussing his toilet bowl while wearing star trek shirts.
I will post a significant donation to TNL if this is confirmed.
Buy us TNL.com and we'll talk.
It's registered, I made an offer, but I want modership or whatever you call it if it goes through
Let Biff run the Sports (Entertainment) area.
No way Nick let's me anywhere within 500 miles of the server man, much less the ability to ban people.

Great news. Maybe I'll write again. In the Fall.
Nice!
Tom's always welcome.
stibs and kano can walk in front of a bus.
A little harsh man, the podcasts were pretty funny.
The were awesome and need to come back in some form or another.
I'll draw up a new Robobo to commemorate the occasion. This one will be twice as long for twice the hilarity!
I'd be willing to contribute as well, now and then.
This is good news. I never knew for certain why Bahn left but I always assumed it was some form of self imposed exile after I laid the smacketh down on his candy ass during the CvS 2 days. If he says he doesn't remember me, that's just the shame talking.
This is fantastic news that I somehow totally missed.
Kinda makes me want to polish up my writing.
I want to critique the new design. Also I hope you guys are thinking about producing some t-shirts. IBTN and TNL exclusive stuff would be good to help tie people in to the community and perhaps make sales. Also whoring out your amazon referral links with every review, preview and news feature would also be an awesome way of doing it. Aside from the ad banners, I mean.
Biff, I'll sell you www.tnl.com.mx for $2.50 and some jawbreakers. No? A dollar and some envelopes?
I know, Opaque and I could have our own love fest podcast.
Alright man, get over it. Not the time to review the podkasts.
We could get instrument companies to send me products for review.
I keep these products.
I would not be able to sit through an entire podcast of weeman talking about music, I'd end up snapping my ipod in half.
Man. Rockvine needs koda, netwurked or Bacon to work on their site. I am starting to get really disappointed with what they are doing. It's so "work-in-progress". I am already considering cutting ties with them sometime after E3.
Partnering with Uber (or whatever they called it) isn't working in their favor. I want to see TNL affiliated with a real music site that's going somewhere. Then I'd see a real reason to start petitioning for music-related products for the freelancers contributing.
Rockvine.com needs a REAL designer and the ability for all the members involved to coordinate things better. I don't think anyone here is going to want to wait 10 years for them to come out with something better.
Oh man, I'm excited as hell to see what's up.
How excited is hell?
Real excited.
I wanna do a trash cinema section with DNG. We will be the Siskel and Ebert of schlock.
lol butts drunk.
I am not drunk. i'm just laying in the dark, with my laptop with surf music and drinking.
fuck you
and the horse you road in on
It's not about you, man. You don't have to listen.
frogs carding the hell out of me tonight. Lord.
Chris,
You remember what I used to do. If you need my help just drop me a PM.
Hey, bahn, I'd happily do "News Bites" again if you want. That or I'm getting the itch to write game walkthroughs again...
P.S. I hope you have good editors considering all of the many contributors it seems you're going to have.
Is every damn TNLer going to do something for the site?
touche
The core staff is not going to be huge. In fact we have a fairly full staff to begin with, but with new content channels, we really do welcome a lot of people to try out. Plus having some old schoolers bolster our content with occasional irregular features is cool, too.
In that case, I'm going to write about stories happening in NJ. Only maybe 4 people on this board will give a shit.
i'm just wondering how much of the TNL personality will be kept in the writing and podcasts and if this revamp is done in an honest attempt to be a serious gaming related outlet. as we know with most noobs, the TNL humor isn't received well by a lot of people and i have a feeling if a lot of what's done is in the vein of inside jokes and the "community way" the traffic won't stick around. if traffic doesn't stick what's the point of basically making our board a website?
People still went to got next even if the forum community wasn't that great. Also People still go to lots of sites without using Forums. Just because our Forums are full of assholes doesn't mean that people won't come for the front end stuff.
did you even read what i wrote? either of you?
Have you looked at Got-Next's content?
Fine I'll elaborate. TNL's brand of humor only really comes off as offensive when it's particularly aimed towards people who can't handle it. Not to mention there is a degree of professionalism that will be held as standard for TNL content. There is a rift between the front end and the back end, and there always had been and I imagine it will still persist.
GN used to get pretty good traffic from what Frog told me. And they used a lot of the memes and shit that were started here. Since, most of the staff was from TNL. So, again. Thief is right.
Even without a content end at all, TNL's traffic smashes most of the comparable sites out there. Don't worry about it, we'll be fine. I seriously don't think it's going to get less traffic than the current content end that has been dead for years.
TNL's community has a great sense of humor, and also an intelligent side, and yes, we will be trying to capture both of those with the site's content, and yes, that will alienate some of the mouth-breathers that read IGN or whatever.
TNL has always been known as a "hardcore" gaming site. In 2008 that probably doesn't mean the same thing it did in 2002, but the idea is the same: Our audience is better.
Having an abundance of content is just as bad as having no content at all. Just sayin'.
How do you figure?
We're still going to be pretty selective. The fact is we have some really good alumni and if they want to throw something in every now and then that's awesome, but we're not going to let any asshole write for us. Even at GN which had a much smaller audience, we turned away a lot more editors than we took on.
in what could be an absolute watershed moment for TNL, i think dyne actually made an excellent point here. i think one of the problems with the content here in the past is that too much of an emphasis was put on appearing to be "professional," which was fantastic for the TNL writers who parlayed their experience here into pro jobs all over the industry but ultimately forced the site into direct, unwinnable competition with the juggernauts like IGN. i think it's a much better idea to tailor the content to the audience that's here so long as it isn't inaccessible for the new reader.
I can honestly think of only two serious gaming outlets, the escapist and gamasutra. I really can't see TNL4.0 being like either. I think people should be free to write the way they want to write (as long as it's not a grammar holocaust), and that goes double for podcasts. I really don't think Chris, Nick, or anyone is going to tell people to 'dampen it down' for the sake of traffic or whatever.
TNL reminds me of my grandfather. He lived an asshole and died an asshole. That's who he was, and there was no point changing him.
Ironplant is crazy lately. I like it.
podcast pls
That is the idea. That doesn't mean everything we write is going to be caustic and sarcastic, but it will have a personality.
And we should also remember the other side of TNL, which is that there are a bunch of "hardcore" gamers here that know their shit, and that's why we have guys like NeoZeedeater on board. We're going to be playing to that side, too.
I don't think either of these things are "unprofessional" though, so much as they are niche. We're still going to make sure people can write, that stuff is tightly edited and well paced. That's what "professional" means to me, more than a particular tone. I want a polished product, but I don't want to compete with IGN.
i agree. and i think that is understood now.
please stop using the hardcore term Frog.
I said it in quotes and acknowledged the term has lost its meaning, cut me a break.
haha, that's how i used "professional"
your mom!
We're lucky (well, not lucky, but you know what I mean) to have built in traffic from having been around for a long time and having members who were integral parts of the gaming journalism community. Dyne's point could cut either way. I think he meant that he'd prefer the front end to not be so injoke/meme heavy so that it's only preaching to the choir (current members who understand how tnl is), which would again put tnl in direct competition with sites like ign.
However, the opposite might not be very inviting to prospective members. For example, the best dvd site I know is http://www.dvdinmypants.com/. But the entire place is based on injokes and memes and thus the community there sucks balls and I think the traffic for the forum is really small. We'll always have a big forum community, but if we're looking to expand by attracting people with our front page content, some real balance on the front end will have to be found.
Hm, we should throw dvdinmypants a bone and partner with them for movie content here. I like that place but never go anymore because the community sucks.
A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES LOL
