Rockman and Forte and the X games looked fantastic. MM7 was an abortion and we all know it, but lets not get carried away.

I still enjoy the earlier games much more than any of the sequels. I recently played through the Mega Man Anniversary Collection and The Mega Man X Collection. After playing through all the games, I came to the conclusion that Mega Man 1, Mega Man 2, and the original Mega Man X are the best of the bunch. Capcom seemed to stray from the simplistic formula and just seemed to add unnecessary crap to each successive sequel.
Believe me, when MM9 was announced, no one was hoping it would be NES retro-style.
I still think MM8 is fucking beautiful. The colors, fluid animation, the sheer amound of sprites on-screen at any given moment, all great. I was desperately hoping MM0 would be a graphical evolution of that game.
I was. 100%. I seriously, honestly think every 2D Mega Man post-NES has looked like shit. Mega Man looks terrible in all of those incarnations. To me, Mega Man was and forever will be that 8-bit sprite, and that's exactly why I love the fact that MM9 is going back to that.
As well, I have played Mega Man 2 recently. It stills plays great, and I still love the classic 8-bit look.
I think a lot of us prefer that look for the series, actually.
These guys are smart. I agree with them! If this looked like MM7 or 8 I doubt I'd be too psyched about it. The more detail we got in the sprites, the more something felt off to me. It's there in MM8 more than MM7 for me, and it's even there in X4. MM9 seems to be what I hoped it'd be when those rumors hit.
There were plenty of better looking games than MM2 even at the time.
I like the idea of a nostalgic throwback, but let's acknowledge that that's what it is and not pretend the art direction peaked in '89.
