I'll admit that I didn't realize 7 came after X, but the point does stand. MM7's sprites were done by Inafune himself, who did sprites for the NES game as well, and it was only the second 16-bit game he had worked on (the first being Breath of Fire). He didn't work on X or X2.
Final Fantasy IV and Dragon Quest 5 are other good examples of 8-bit tile artists that had not yet developed solid techniques for higher palettes.
i always thought the sprites were suposed to look as close to the character artwork as possible. the original mm sprite was as close as they could get on an nes. it doesn't mean it's the epitome of the characters image.
So this is basically a NES game being sold only on WiiWare? And they want $10 for it?
LOL. Pass.
Oh, and that same issue of Nintendo Power rumors that there's a Castlevania fighting game in the works.
LOL x2.
I didn't say that at all. I'm saying the 8-bit sprite was goofy and awkward, and even given the same technical limitations you could do better.
The MMX and MM8 sprites are great. MM7 is weak because there's a poor understanding of how to convey depth and texture with shading, probably because Inafune was inexperienced with working with a larger palette (or maybe he just sucks).
sorry, frog...i meant that for shidoshi.
i'd like to see them go in a new direction with the sprites overall. maybe something with flat colors and awesome lighting effects. heh, something like flashback.
ahahaha, i forgot about his mvc sprite. THAT was the best one.
