Aside from the maybe 1 a year I buy I don't even give a shit about video games anymore. I don't know what's coming out for any system and I'm not really interested. How many of you don't care about them anymore but just hang around here for the ice-cream social?
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say... everyone that's on TNL and doesn't post in Gaming Discussion.
I still like 'em.
Except for RPG's. Don't really like those.
Or most "HD Gen" games.
Or games with story but no gameplay.

I still like them. I'm not nearly as hardcore as I was when I was a kid, however.
I love video games, but I don't get excited like I used to. I still read the news and look forward to new games, but I have more realistic expectations.

I think I'm more into video games now than I ever was. Although, my playing routine has changed a lot. I used to play whenever I could sneak any time in, but now I'll only play if I have at least an hour or two set aside.

I play video games for fun, unlike most of the internet. I can't play 4047938 hour long RPGs anymore, nor am I nearly as much of a Japanophile as I was in grammar and high school. There's just too much else to worry about than something as silly as video games. Video games are still one of my main hobbies, but they are a fun diversion, not my whole life.
This is why I haven't gone looking for Sonic Rush since the second time I threw it across the room. It wasn't fun anymore and I'd rather do something else.
I still love games, but as play becomes work it has a weird effect on how you enjoy them. I don't approach new games the way I used to and I don't really get to soak them in and enjoy them like I would if I spend all day at work and was using them to unwind. Now I play games for work and I watch movies to unwind.
I don't have the time to care nowadays.
When I'm not in school, I'll play like a game a month but usually only the popular, casual gamer type of shit.
The next game I play is the copy of Twilight Princess I've had sitting around forever.
I have been considering throwing Tales of Symphonia in there, though.
I love them as much as ever. I do get sick of certain games and genres, but not of gaming in general. If anything, I'm more obsessed with learning about its history than when I was young since before the internet was popular, there was so little access to information in comparison. Sometimes I enjoy writing about games; sometimes I have no desire to do so. Sometimes I want to work in the gaming industry; sometimes I just think it will interfere with my enjoyment of them.
I don't get the appeal of hanging around a video game message board if you're not into them. I know people like to chat online with friends, and it doesn't bother me or anything, but it doesn't seem to me that the non-gaming sections of TNL are busy enough to keep a non-gamer interested.
Beat-em-up fatigue is a real thing!
I love the VDO games.
I care. If it weren't for games I'd have to do something else to make money.
This. I get hyped about 1-2 games per year now, and mainly stick to buying either budget PS2 collections or older, cheaper Xbox/Xbox360 fare now. I enjoy getting a bunch of good, older stuff for $5 a pop instead of spending $60 for newer games, although I've made some exceptions for that (like GTA IV). I've found that as more time goes by, I have less desire (and time) to play longer games, leading me to stick with pick up and play games that don't require a long play session to accomplish something.Quote:

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as those who are still into old games, but new games? Other than fighting games and MGS4, not so much. I finally have an HD display which helps, but this shit costs a lot and I'm not sure if I'm enjoying it all as much as I should for that money. I think I'm putting off getting a 360 yet again.
I tend to feel guilty after spending long stretches of time on single-player videogames, which is really starting to impede on my enjoyment of them.
Playing SF or Culdcept with friends is still as fun as ever, though. I think I enjoy that brand of videogame time even more as I get older, since it gets harder and harder to get a group of people together.
I don't play many new games anymore, and I doubt I'll ever buy another console. I still play games, but only for a few hours a week, and mostly in short sessions. I usually play on my computer, but occasionally I'll dust off my gamecube or dreamcast.
PaCrappa: I guess the reward for working out is general health, muscles (which translates to self-esteem, fucking?) and what, bruised ribs and shit?
Working out gives a great feeling. It's a natural high that more than rivals the psychological addiction/reward videogames give out, so I understand it somewhat, but I don't see why you have zero time to play the games to entertain yourself.
It's not like I work out all day. I play guitar, have dogs to look after and have a social life. All of which offer rewards beyond time spent and an easy shallow laugh.
I do agree with the whole gaming with people thing though. I still get together with Joust and the Sunday videogame lads. We had a Super G'nG score challenge which was a good time. Master won btw.
I love old games and new games equally. I am equally likely to play my Nintendo or something as I am to play my xbox360.
Yeah, Pa, I agree most of all about the social life. I mean, my social life is in the doldrums right now because of my money situation but more often than not I'd spend my free time doing something else. My favorite thing to do is ANYTHING with my friends. If you guys have been paying attention to me I have like a million interests and I'm always up for an adventure, and hanging out with friends is almost always a better time, and more rewarding, than playing a game by yourself. You guys don't really need to be told that. I'm glad I've done so much with my life already at 23. I've done more than a lot of people, and I've made a lot of really great friends.
The thing I look most forward to in games these days is co-operative play, as I can hang with my buddies and play games, and nobody gets their feelings hurt when they suck bad. I like to play games in general, especially when I'm with people, because I just really like to compete and play, and win especially.
When I get hooked on a game I become a bit of a shut-in, and I become way too antisocial. This happens every month or so, I go through a cycle where I get big into games, and all my relationships suffer a little bit. I still go out but I'll be short on the phone and won't make as many calls, that sort of thing. I've come to accept it, I still enjoy doing that, but I feel like it's pretty unhealthy when it happens, like a short-term addiction.
I need games to be good. So I don't care when they're from specifically. I do believe that the cream/crap ratio has been going downward since 32 bits hit.
I still play River City Ransom/Contra/Super Mario Bros. 2 regularly and neglect my newer games, if that says anything.
There's a decent chance I'll never finish Phantom Hourglass.
And as much fun as we all poke at people who are into WoW, it's basically just hanging out with your friends, and it's way better than people who play 2 or 3 JRPG's a month.
Have stopped playing them, am keeping them around for now in case this phase passes. At the moment I devote all my time to guitar, it's just more rewarding. Instead of beating a videogame you get ninja skillz
Yes, I still dig videogames quite a bit, but arcade style games like fighting games and shooters are the staples because I can play them anytime with no required or minimum time commitment or level of progression. I've probably spent the most on JPS2 games in 2008. I will pick up the big current gen releases that fit my criteria (i.e. focus on gameplay, tailored for pick-up-and-play) but I'm finding myself passing on more games that I'd normally be all over, like Grid because I know there are other things I'd rather spend my time on and would not get my $60 worth even though the games themselves are fine.
But in terms of quantity of purchases, considering I have four active consoles at the moment and there seems to be more $29.99 games than I remember in the past, I'm pretty comparable to where I was 10 years ago.
When it's 10 degrees outside and I have some friends over, we're like "fuck going out, let's smoke a few bowls and play some VF5" and I'm fine with that.

It's also easier to have time for gaming when you don't watch any TV shows. I have no idea what this Lost shit is, The Office, 24, etc., never watched one single episode, though I may rent the seasons to see what everybody's been clucking about. The only TV I watch is occassional HBO and sporting events, and that's as much background multitasking noise as anything.
Videogaming is still awesome, it's cool, it's still the shit, and I can't see myself not gaming in the future.

Gooch mentioned where he's at today vs where he was 10 years ago (he still plays/loves videogames just as much) and I think that's a really good benchmark to use.
Ten years ago I was buying my first console (PSX), finishing FFVII, and beginning a summer of intense FIFA 98 while the World Cup played in the background. The next couple years brought days (ok, weeks) in the dungeons of Diablo 2, non-stop LAN parties playing TFC, and hours and hours and hours and hours of CounterStrike.
These days I'm content firing up the ol' 360 once a month for a couple hours of Oblivion or CoD4. Why? Real life, man.
It's not so much that videogames passed me by. I think I've just outgrown them. I prefer my games to be social events (don't we all?), whether it be CounterStrike, WoW, NBA Street, or SFII. As awesome as XBLA is, I can't get my friends together enough to play and when we do, we'd rather play a board game.
Speaking of which, I just don't see my (limited) entertainment dollars giving me much bang for the buck in videogames anymore. A) I don't play them enough to pull my $60 out; and B) the interest just isn't there. I'm much more content hanging with friends rolling die in Heroscape or playing chess than I am plopped in front of the TV.
I'll always love the idea of videogames and how they sometimes allow me to fulfill my fantasy wishes (WoW really is the closest thing to actually being in Star Wars, imo).
It's not that they're not what they used to be (they're better than ever); it's that I'm not who I used to be.

That's not to say that I don't like current games, but I just don't have time to play most of todays stuff. Like someone else said, I mostly focus on fighters, shooters, and old stuff that you can pick up and play a few minutes at a time.
I also have been going through old console "phases." I'll dig out (or buy) an old system and play it non stop for several months, slowly going through the library of good stuff. I'm currently in the middle of a PC Engine phase, but I'm taking a break to play all the Megaman games.
However, it is summertime now, and I have very little time for games. Most of my time and money will be going towards car stuff - repairs, upgrades, etc. Working on my car is like a zen experience to me. I'll shift to more game stuff in the fall when it gets too cold for car stuff, or when I run out of money, whichever comes first.
I love games still, but they've lost a lot of their magic. I blame the internet for that. But, at the same time, the internet has given me easy access to view some of the games I'd never have heard about before.
So meh.
Still VERY MUCH looking forward to Soul Calibur 4. Tits. Just wish I had a lot more time for these throwaway hobbies. My job takes up 50-60 hours of my life each week.
I still game, but not as much as before, work, life and weights all take their time and sometimes im just not drawn to gaming. The wii drew me back a little, and i still play pc, but i tend to focus on a few big games with lots of replay, rather than 2-3 titles a month. Hell, i still play oblivion and morrowind, thanks to the modding community. But im no ninja skills guy anymore, id probably lose to more diligent players on street fighter 2 these days, and fps' i wasnt good at to begin with, im happy being the support guy in mmo's (and free ones at that) and not getting too worked up. The spore demo has me a little more excited though, I see myself playing that game for a long time.
In the meantime if you get Tekken 5 DR or Battle Fantasia we can still love forever! I do not get much online PS3 fighting. :(Quote:

And with online gaming like Xbox Live getting some good play with friends has never been easier -- even across provincial lines (or state lines) and bad snow storms.
My Xbox 360 has been solid play since the day it came out of the box. I probably have about 22 - 25 games for it, too.

I go into gaming discussion maybe... once a week. I go into Sound Off, Cinemania, Music Discussion every day.
I still care about video games. I like to talk about them and read the news and history about them. I don't have time or the extra income to play games like I used to. I do play about an hour a day, but on my psp or DS since they go with me to work and I get 2 15 minute breaks and an half hour lunch and that's about all the time I get to play. Having CFW on psp is great so I can put all those psone games that I bought but didn't play on them. Wish I could do that with ps2 games...
I like videogames quite a lot.
I don't have the drive to buy games the day they are released anymore and I don't get all crazy about the hottest new releases like I used to.
I pick up games on the cheap and I play them when I get to 'em.
With so many games in my "pile of shame" it just doesn't make sense to spend 60 bucks on a game, when I could wait five months and get it for 20.
Portable games in the bed before I go to sleep are pretty awesome too.
The main difference in my game diet is I don't get all crazy and try to "master" games like I used to. Back in the day I was a hardcore fighting game player. I was well known all around the area at arcades and played in fighting game tourneys (sup 99 wins killer instinct? sup street fighter 2 guile dominance for hours and hours? sup zomg he is never going to lose in tekken 2?). I wrote faqs, I practiced single moves and combos for hours on end.
I do not have the drive, time, determination, or even the care or want to do that anymore.
I play games as long as they are fun... as soon as they quit being fun, regardless of if I have finished them or not, I turn 'em off.
I felt that way about the JRPGs, until the PSOne/PSX came out. I'd finished every (North American released) Final Fantasy, finished Phantasy Star II, Lunar, Lunar 2 and The Secret of Mana. I'd thought that I would never tire of that style of gaming, then along came Final Fantasy VII.Quote:

I still enjoy gaming quite a bit. It's just that it takes more than game X (Part 4) to get me interested in playing. This generation has me excited about what's to come, but I'm not as eager to jump into every new title that comes along. I want to play MGS4, but I'm trying to finish up a couple of games I've had for awhile, before I sink my teeth into that game.
I enjoy dusting off an old console and giving a few games a spin, but just as often as I find a thrilling experience, I'm just as often wondering why I enjoyed certain games back in the day.

I have several games I've never beaten, that I genuinely enjoyed, simply because I stopped playing them for a while and therefore never worked up the motivation to go back and relearn where I was at.
The only game in recent memory that I've played is Oblivion. I have put quite a bit of time into it this summer because I'm not taking any classes, but I have been weening myself off of it. I have two characters at level 21, and it's getting to the point where it's not that much fun anymore.
I just have too many hobbies to dedicate time to simultaneously; I'm about to start messing with the motorcycle again after a few month hiatus.
I don't really play games much anymore. There are multiple reasons for this. The simplest reason is that I currently do not have the time. Or that I have the time, but I feel guilty playing them, knowing I have better things to be doing. I find myself mostly playing roms that can be quick saved.
But, as nerdy as it may sound, things like anime, video games, cartoons, sci-fi, etc used to be a big part of who I was as a child. I love(d) fiction in all its forms. Now that we have the internet, and have had it for so long, its kind of hard to reflect and put into words how those nerdy things could be so important while living in small towns. Video games were so important in that small little world we each lived in.
But now video games have reached the saturation point. My personality and character is much more complex than it was ten years ago. I no longer wish to find myself in a reflection of other people's works, but desire to find myself in my own reflection. So I've dedicated my life to that end.
A small part of me will always be that little boy. But I no longer spend hours playing games everyday, nor do I buy games new. I pick games up for $5-$15 used when I'm out Pawn shopping for rare guitars and gear. I sometimes pick up stuff cheap to sell later to fund my creative hobbies.
I no longer perceive entertainment as I did ten or fifteen years ago. Where I once thought the Brave little toaster was just an awesome movie, I find myself bouncing back and forth from simple enjoyment and thoughts of how such a movie has a deeper message about social classes and objectification. While watching Robotech/Macross I no longer just see awesome robots but also think about the statement it makes about war and the impact of culture or the historical references it makes to WW2. With JRPGs I don't just see a simple fantasy story with a turned based game system but an over all message about life in regards to resource and time management.
btw, if I had to pick a day that I stopped being a hardcore gamer, it was the day that Sega pulled out of console market.Quote:

I only care about 2 series, mgs and zelda. I like them like I like movies, I actually get inspired after I play them and really enjoy myself on a slightly deeper level than normal games. Its not the same as it was, it never will be, and that really doesn't bother me. I don't own any video game systems or a tv, so I'm lucky when I get to play these series that I actually enjoy. I just beat twilight princess for the Wii and honestly its probably the best game I have ever played. To answer the question, outside of those two series, no I dislike games, but I still love hanging around these boards.

I've just come to a realization. I think I read more than I play games.

Me too. I've been reading every day, and have grown much more appreciative of the novels that my English teacher assigned after re-reading them (Thanks Ms. Guha!).
I still love games. I wish I could play them as much as I'd like. But I just don't have time to do so, and where I used to kill myself to force that time into my schedule, I just can't keep doing that. So I've gotten much more selective. I used to buy anything that had any kind of hook or inspired any flicker of interest in me; I'd buy games simply because they did something that looked like fun. Now I only buy games that I know are must-haves for me. I know my tastes, and I don't waste my time on games that I have to motivate myself to play, or dig deep to get to something I might enjoy.
In the past four months or so, I've sold off the majority of my collection. The only things that remain with me, are my Xbox 360 games, MGS4, Uncharted, Mario Galaxy, three PS2 games (Ico, SotC, Yakuza) and three Dreamcast games (Shenmue, JGR, PSO). I'm almost unanimously disinterested in JRPGs now days, outside of Final Fantasy. Video game news isn't very interesting to me anymore. I was only holding onto my DS for the Phoenix Wright games, so I've sold off my portable collection and both my DS and PSP.
So, yes, I do still care, but in a much more reserved capacity.
I still love games, being older I have different responsibilities but when it comes down to it if I have a day off I want to play games to relax.
I am still good at it, I just don't own it. All the new kiddies are still 2 years behind me.Quote:

Nothing will ever come close to standing next to your friends in the arcade and trying to finish a game like X-Men with your limited tokens.
I care about good games. It's too bad there basically are none anymore. Nearly every major release is a disappointment now.

I still get stoked for the one or two big name titles here and there, but I just don't have any time to play since I had a kid. I'd rather hang out with my family anyway, but I will be glad when my boy is old enough for me to introduce him to the hobby, that should be cool.
There is an old dude that works at my shop (he's 65 and retiring at the end of the year) and he's a gamer. I initially thought that was pretty cool until I realized he's 65 fucking years old and spends every second of his free time holed up in his filthy ass trailer playing video games. Fucking pitiful, I don't wanna be that dude.

I pretty much will play the games I'm interested in for as long as they keep me interested. Beat MGS4, I'll never play it again. I've always loved video games, but like anything I go in phases. Generally I will get the urge to play games, and beat 2-3 in a week or two. And then I wont even turn a console on for a month or more.
I hate RPG's or anything I can't get through in about 8-12 hours. So I'm big on shooters and other action games. Although I've been in the mood for some stealth games. Just beat Army of two, and plan on starting MGS2 and Assassins Creed. And after that I msot likley wont pick up a controller until august.
It's also worth mentioning that I was once a collector, but I gace it up about two years ago. It was a tremendous waste of time, money, and space. I don't buy anything that isn't current, unless I REALLY want it, so never. And all my old systems and games are boxed and bagged in my basement. Now and then I get the inkling to hook up the saturn or genesis, but it quickly passes.
Also this, video games are a huuuuuge waste of time. Which is why I've never put in the effort to be a l33t halo or Virtua fighter player. Because who gives a fuck? After hours or tribulation you have acquired a skill with absolutley no practical applications.Quote:
