OK, so I need a logo. Or, I want a logo. I have one, but him's sad :( and I want one that's funny. http://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/i...stom/kirby.gif -wtf?

So I thought I'd hit up the talented kids at tnl for a cartoon billy goat with pistols dressed up like a gunfighter!

Notes:

1. If there's only one entry I'll hound you like a dog till the project's complete. Ask rezo.
2. If there's more than one entry, I'll pick my favorite and everyone else is shit out of luck.
3. I'll put up a poll, to see what everyone else thinks, don't vote until we start getting in some entries.
4. Draw a stylized/cartoon goat that looks like a cowboy/sharpshooter.
5. DO NOT draw an evil Swedish death metal satanic goat.
6. DO NOT draw an overly goofy retarded Max Fleischer goat.
7. OK the goat can be goofy, but the goat has to PLAY IT STRAIGHT AND THINK HE'S BAD ASS. Like Inspector Clouseau.
8. The final product should be one or two colors in a vector based format (so it can be scaled) preferably .pdf.
9. Submit drawing by 7/25/2008
10. I'll make a decision before 7/31/2008.
11. Final drawing gets at least $150*.

- *The selected design will receive $150 plus $25 for each additional entry past the first entry, not to exceed $400. Two entries per member. Is there such a thing as a PDF vector file? How detailed does the image need to be - i.e., will it be displayed mostly as a medium-sized graphic on a Web page?

I know you can create a vector drawing in say, Illustrator, then save it as a pdf. Then take that pdf to any tom dick and harry PC that has Acrobat and read said file.

The logo needs to be suitable for print media and 1080 video (but not monster cable quality video). I really just need the cartoon, and I can crop it if need be, and add in the text "BLUE NECK PICTURES." I could also convert it to vector, but I don't really have time. If you do a logo and add the text yourself, that's cool. I'm really just fishing for ideas here.

I considered changing the name to Goatslenger Studios, but I should be consistent and keep the original name. So a goat gunslingin' mascot doesn’t have shit to do with rednecks or the blues, but I think the randomness adds to the funny. You see a goat, you see BLUE NECK. What the fuck does that mean? Also I can still keep the old logo for tragedies.

See the attachment. It was the logo rezo did for me. I like it. It's works great for dramas. But it doesn't say, "Hey look over here, this shit is going to be retarded!" It's also the scalable pdf I was talking about.

This sounds like a fun challenge. I'll put one up.

Only one bite? Is $150 not enough? OK, I'll add $25 for every additional entry, up to $400. If I get a good logo out of this it'll be worth it.

Ex: 10 entries = $375 = $150 + ( 9 x $25)

Waaaa...I'll put some up tonight. I already have them sketched up loosely on newsprint, clean up the best and scan them in. Not sure I want to go through the trouble of vectorizing them unless you see one you like, but I'll make it clear through the blocking what it would look like in vectors.

edit: Also, when you say billy goat, that conjures a certain image to me, but it's not terribly specific. I'd say the major difference is between mountain goats and dairy goats (which look a lot like african pygmy goats); which way were you leaning?

OK yeah I'll make a decision based on the sketches only. That way only the winner will have to go through the trouble of vectoring them. Send as many drawings as you like but only two per peson will count for the prize money. See 1st post. I also went back to the orignal deadline.

Here's some ideas I came up with. If there's any little x's anywhere, that means that area would be filled with a solid color.

One is SECRETLY for Nick

While these are stylized, from your description I'm not sure if they are cartoony enough. I can make some revisions if something is close and you have any suggestions.

I know it's 2 entries per dude, so you can pick 2 and disregard the rest if you like. Personally, I think 1 and 3 are the strongest, so I'd probably "officially" submit those unless you see something right away you want different.

I don't know that last one's pretty hot.

EDIT: the odd ones are the best, something about 5 strikes me.

I like Fury's first one there, personally.

OK, I like it too and sice you and Fury do, we'll go with that and #3.

EDIT: I also like Warmup2. It looks like a what if Brian Froud drew Clint Eastwood thing.

Sorry about the quality, these were done with a shitty ballpoint pen during work and then I scanned them in poorly. I did a little bit of touch-up with Photoshop to make them clearer and help the blacks be blacker, but even though it's half-assed I figured you get the idea.

At first I thought I thought the second one was AGH! ugly. But now I really dig it. The gun is impressive.

Yeah, I expected people to hate it but I really wanted to draw it. It was fun but made my hand hurt, and if I had the time tonight I'd make a smooth vector version which would make it look so much better. Oh well, another night.

FF, is it possible to have him hold up a revolver in his right hand in the background of 1, much like the 3rd one, without it jacking up the composition? Would that look good?

However you want to angle it, incorporate it, it's up to you. But without it is the only thing I have against it, considering the gun is part of the ploy. goat + gunslinger = goatslenger

I like the idea of him pointing it directly at the camera with his left hand.

I'm sure it can be worked in; it will sort-of change the shape of the whole thing, but let's see. I don't think anyone would doubt that he has a gun, and I was finding the incorporation a little awkward with the goat "hands" and not wanting to anthropomorphize it too much. Scourges idea is interesting, but how it's held is an issue again.

I don't think you'd need to show the "hand" per se. The position of his left arm as is looks as though it's pointing toward the camera. A foreshortened revolver could be put in with little or no hand showing.

Exactly. Yeah, I didn't really like the idea of showing the hoof. Just croping it around the cylinder area so you don't see it.

Thanks guy!, Thanks to FuryFox for going all out and thanks to cigs for actually getting it in before the day ended on the last place possibe! When I logged in and saw that 5:51 AM (CST) timestamp, I nearly shit a bit.

So, we have all of our drawings in and their in the OP, so if I could get everyon's opinion on them, that would be great. Poll ends Tuesday and I'll make a desision by Thursday.

FAN FICTION!!!!!! i was thinking about this at chick fil a and had to add it to this thread because i'm gay and didn't want to forget it, and also an old cowboy narrates it. Just in case you don't like it, i'll say it's super stupid and gay in advance, so then i can't take credit for it being really bad.

In a quiet town in northern Arizona, a tall, dark man sat by a saloon. As a calm wind threatened to lacerate his hat like a sharp knife through flesh, he played a sad melody on an old guitar. His coat had seen better days, and nights, as had he. The justice that once shone bright in his eyes had long since been stained by the blood of more men than most goats even meet in their dusty lives.

"Pardner."

He stopped playing. He looked up to see a face, leathered by the sun. The other man's eyes were squinted so tight you'd wonder if he could even see, that is, if you couldn't feel his glare cutting straight through you.

"Let me buy you a drink."
The tall man's sunken eyes met the eyes of the other.
"Clint," the tall man's voice was low and weak, but as strong and piercing as a black shadow on white sand, "I never figured i'd see your god damn face for as long as I live."

"Come on in, Billy."

The tall man stood slowly and dusted off his pants. He followed the leathered man into the saloon. The man behind the bar was as big as a bison.

"Sorry boys, I'm closin' early for the day." He turned to meet the two. "Billy!" the grin filled his entire face. "I thought that old song was familiar. My little girl was asking about you, haven't seen you since you scared off those varmints stealin' all our cattle!"

"I've been around, Dug. Could me and my buddy trouble you for one more drink?"

"Of course, Bill." The big man poured something dark into two glasses. "Wish you'd stick around here, my little girl needs a strong man like you."

The tall man took a sip from his glass. "I ain't good enough for staying here."

"Nonsense, you're as good as they come. We always need a good man to keep the peace around these parts.

"Now," he said, nodding to the leathered man, "Introduce me to yer friend here."

The tall man stood up and pushed his stool under the bar. "This here's the best man you'll ever meet. He's the man who taught me what I know, and the only man who could best me."

"Proud to meet you," the big man smiled and shook the leathered man's hoof. "I'm Dug Carson, what name you go by, son?"

"Clint. Clint Doherty."

"Well, Mr. Doherty, I'd be proud to see you visit more often. Any friend of Bill's is a friend of mine."

The leathered man smiled at the tall man. "Seems you've earned your respect in these parts."

"He's always helpin' us out."

The leathered man put down some money, and the two friends left the bar as empty as they had found it.

"They need ya here Bill, they'll miss ya too much."

The tall man was silent as they walked through the empty streets and far beyond the town. He finally spoke, "Clint, I need to pay ya back for everything you've done for me."

"No, Bill, let's just part here and forget it."

"There's no forgettin' about what's happened."

The leathered man looked up to the sky and sniffed.

"I suppose yer right." He was quiet for a moment. "Bill, let's just think this through."

The tall man didn't speak.

"You'll shoot to kill, right Bill? If you miss, yer just tellin' me I didn't teach ya right."

"I'll kill ya sure enough," his voice was tired, his eyes followed the horizon.

"Fine, Bill, we'll do it right. Turn, ten paces, count of three, your count."

They turned.

"One."

"Louder Bill."

"ONE." The tall man was still.

"Bill, let's go back. That town-"

"TWO."

The leathered man sighed while his eyes flitted over the Kaibab Plateau. He thought he could hear the Colorado river rushing by, just a few score yards away.

"Bill,"

"THREE."

Two shots cut the air. And then it was so quiet you could hear the clouds drifting on the breeze.

"God damn it Bill, you hit me in the god damn arm, you know that's not going to kill me."

The leathered man walked over to Bill's hunched figure. "Those people need you, Bill. And now, they're as helpless as all those people you killed."

Bill's took a breath and shuddered.

"Take my guitar, Clint. There's money inside. That's for those drinks."

Clint shook his head. "Bill, the money on your head will buy me drinks for the rest of my life. Why the hell didn't you kill me? Bill, god damn it, I told you to kill me. You're a better shot, you could've hit me before I even touched my gun. You had a life, Bill, all that stuff you did didn't matter anymore."

Clint took his canteen out and gave it to Bill. The tall man raised it to his lips, opening his mouth for a final drink. "It's justice, what you taught me. It's justice, Clint." He drew in a sharp breath. "It's justice."

The tall man sat down and sucked as much air as he could into his withering body. "Justice. Clint." The canteen fell from his hands before the water touched his tongue.

"Bill, Bill, Bill." Clint stood back up, took the tall man's guitar, and placed it in the tall man's arms.

I like cigs' #2 (entry 7). It's pretty clear and clean enough to be a logo. It also has a lot of personality. Yellerdog's entry is a close second. His is more political somehow. Definitely some kind of neo-liberal message worked in that shit he didn't think we'd notice.

Since the $ is up a bit I'll animate him saying blue neck if mine wins.

Entry 3 is probably the best logo of the bunch.

I went ahead and added them to be considered but didn't up the jackpot up any since they were late. I thought that was a fair compromise.

I think I've narrowed it down to 1, 2, 3, and 6. But since this is an image that I want to stick into peoples minds and represent the troop, I really need to go with what the group says. Also, I need to think about the new ones longer to see if they grow on me the way the others did.

OK, well the votes are in. I didn't do the math right so it ended two days early, but from the votes we got, I think there's a clear front runner.

However, I also like YellerDog's. So the only question I have left is does YellerDog's goat look more like Clint Eastwood then FuryFox's goat looks like Stranger from Oddworld.

I only realized the whole Strangers Wrath thing like a couple weeks ago, but if you look at this shot below he's really not a goat... which is good for me.

I dunno, actually, I don't think there's a resemblance there. It's just the last thing I want is for someone to see it and go, "Oh, Oddworld." That's something I should have thought of before asking for a cowboy goat.

On the flipside, there's "old goat" as in "You old goat!" which is a whimsical little saying! So that’s another plus to the image!

I just want to say again you guys did a great job and I got exactly want I wanted. Variety. FuryFox offered up the Brian Froud fantasy goat, MachDeus with the Pantera goat and Oh Shit! I'm on mescaline goat, Finch's hill billy goat, YellerDog's Unforgiven goat, cigs Spümcø goat and Dunlap's Willie Nelson goat. They're all so unique, it would be awesome to have a comic with them all brawling in a saloon!

Agreed. I thought it was clear voting wouldn't start until after the deadline. In any case, I'll be home soon from ComicCon and cansketch out a w/gun version, but I think everyone can visualize that well enough to vote if a new poll was started.

I have the feeling a lot of people picked which one they liked best, not necessarily the best logo.
