omg found a good bike store, and tried out some things. They had Trek hybrid types, that were sort of mountain bike positioned (yay for my back) but waaaaay lighter frames and road wheels. Compared to my junker mountain bike, it was like learning to ride again. And I could actually pick these up (mine is really, really heavy for no reason).
Crap I want one.
edit: these are what I was toying with that I really loved.
FX 7.3: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/bike_path/fx/73fx/
7100: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...h/hybrid/7100/
The FX was absurdly zippy since it's pretty road-heavy for a hybrid. But crap, it was light and responsive. So unlike the junk I've been riding. I would just be worried about a curb or uneven pavement taking that thing out since I'm used to my clunker mountain bike.

I got some rollerblades for $5 at the local thrift store, can I be part of the club?
Or at least an exception?
-
Noms, both of those look hot as hell. If I got another one, I would either get a hybrid or cross bike. There's really no reason to have a suspension if you're just riding on pavement. I see what the MSRP is, but what was the store wanting for them, if you don't mind me asking?
I treat my road bike like shit, but I haven't broken it yet (except for the collision with the car a while back... but that's all fixed up). I ride through grass, off of curbs, etc.

Store wanted $540 "or we can work out something a bit lower" for the FX, and 300something for the 7100. I'm thinking the 7100 just because I'm so used to mountain bikes and I'd be afraid that my 'cut through grass and such' shortcuts around campus pedestrian congestion would ruin those road tires on the FX. I ride kind of carelessly since I've got a heavy as rock steel junker right now that was falling apart anyway.
They don't have any mountainy hybrid frames other than the FX series that are rigid/suspensionless, though. The bike shop guy was griping about it too. "They throw this stuff on good frames for no reason, because people think it makes the bike better. Idiots."
I still can't get over being able to pick that bike up with one hand so easily. Mine is an effort to lift and move around. I had no idea bikes could actually be so light.

I caved in. Trek 7.3FX.
OH MY GOD
Such a good bike. I love it to pieces. Also, got a surprisingly good deal since it's an '08 model and a floor model.
brb gonna go ride

Congrats Nomi! The seat looks a bit low in relation to the handlebars, but that may be just how you like it.
-
IT'S A GIRLS BIKE!!!! GAY!
-
It's a men's frame, actually. I could not stand the women's one.
And Tones, if I had the seat any higher, I wouldn't be able to tip-toe the ground without leaning the bike way over. I'm a shorty.
-
Okay, it makes sense. I just assumed that its dimensions would be pretty small, since I assumed that it would be a women's frame.

Very nice ride, Nomi. Congrats.
Just curious, are those are high pressure tires (they look like it)?
