Any of you guys ever do a bike tour before? A friend of mine who does a lot of cyclocross and camping wants to do one. I'm so pumped! But also very ignorant!
Currently planning for a new bike purchase in 2011. I have no idea where to begin.
What kind of riding are you looking to do? Street, Trail Or Mountian or a combo of all 3?
Anyway you look it at it, its really silly to buy new. People like to spend all sorts of money on a nice new bike, decide they don't like it, and end up dumping the entire rig on Craigslist for a fraction of the price.
My Trek is a late 90's bike, but it it had a seriously upgraded wheelset, CF bars, lightweight seatpost, upgraded derailers, so in all including the original MSRP, guy who bought it new was into the bike for about $2200.
Got the bike for $300 this year.
I picked up a pair of Powergrips to replace my toe clips for winter. After like, a day, Powergrips are so much nicer than even 4 gate toe clips and i kind of think i might not go back. They hold my feet better and at a slightly better place on the pedal, they're easier to adjust, they don't scrape the ground when i take my feet out of them, and i can wear boots with them on those super cold days and Converse shoes on every other day. Only 2 things i don't like: toe clips look better, and getting your foot into Powergrips takes a little getting used to. Otherwise, super recommended.
I had some questions about bike racks. I'm thinking of putting one one the back or the front. Which tends to be best in practice? I'm thinking back. Maybe something like this:

anyone with exp in buying racks have any advice in what to look for?
also, I am selling these mini swiss made SIGG sports/bike water bottles. I really like the two I own. They retail for like 17.99. I have them in the sale thread, but I figured everyone ignores my sale threads.

I think 6.50 is a very good price, considering what they normally cost.

You're on a Schwinn Worldsport, right? Off the top of my head, I think that type of rack on the back is really your only choice, because I doubt the stock fork has mounting brackets for it-but I could be wrong.
Cargo weight over the back wheel is less noticable and less stable, but perfectly fine for most people's needs. It is far less conspicuous and is ideal for 99% of commuters. Cargo weight over the front wheel makes the bike handle more difficultly, but is more stable and you can see your cargo. It also doesn't look as sexy, and you will definitely notice the handling on your bike. If you carry lots of shit that can slosh about (like food) or more weight regularly, it is the way to go.
For reference, I actually use a large Wald paperboy-type basket on the front of my main bike, but I also have a wider wheel base and less of my weight on the front end than you. I run a lot of bulky cargo though. It makes carrying groceries or big bags of dog food home quite pleasant, and is cheap (like $35). It also gets noisier as time goes on and is heavy, and does not look cool. A lot of dudes I know have touring bikes with the more common rack over both wheels with removable fold-out baskets or panniers, and I dig that setup a lot.
