I'm sure I'm not the only person on here who uses his (or her) bicycle to get around from time to time. I mostly ride it to school, where parking is impossible and taking the bus is slower. I also like taking hour-long rides at night just to calm the nerves.

I try to ride my bike every day, and I use it to get to my friends' houses that live near by to save on gas costs.

I ride it every day, and cardio work is work, but I'd much rather have a street bike...I can't imagine anyone really enjoying a mountain bike unless they actually go offroad, in which case you'd want something more serious than that. My girlfriend's old bike is much faster and rides smoother.
I can't fathom why bikes like Mr. K's are popular. I love watching people walk them up hills though.

Parking is actually easier than finding a spot on a bike rack for commuters at MD. Hell, parking is easier if you're commuting than a resident because the only bigass lots are for commuters. (we've got something like 10-12,000 commuters.)Quote:

It is ridiculously flat where I live. I rode it around at school in the mountains too, but I just thought of the hills as exercise. There was only one hill in the entire city I couldn't take on my bike, and I never needed to go up it. It's a fun, comfortable ride.Quote:

We have 4 huge parking garages as well as a crapload of parkings lots though most of the lots in the middle of campus are faculty. The parking lots at the back of campus (the commuter lot) are a good 1/4 mile long and huge so if you're commuting it's not bad. Still costs $250 a year though ($400 if you're on campus)
Because of how little housing there is on campus though (no seniors and very few juniors), most of the housing is across route 1 about a half mile from class so everyone bikes. Every building has a few bike racks, but they're almost always full.
I only have class twice a week so I'll probably just drive, but I'll probably bike to campus and just lap the campus on days off. It's really the least boring cardio I can think of.
I would say that about a fifth of the students live on campus here, 3/5ths live in apartments within a few miles, and that last fifth is houses of all types. The most desirable places, I think, are the houses within a few blocks of the campus on the north/east side of campus.

Riding late at night when everything is calm and quiet is one of my favorite things. Going on rides at 4am with 1-2 inches of fresh snow is one of the most magical things ever.
I live in the state capitol and the area is completely bike-unfriendly. There are almost no designated bike lanes, there are no bike racks or areas to lock bikes at any of the grocery stores or at any of the bar and restaurant areas downtown, and there has actually been recurring complaints in the editorial section of the newspaper about cyclists on the roadways (one even blaming the death of a cyclist on the rider and not the speeding car).
Philly; on the other hand, was a great city to ride a bike in, everything is flat and smooth, and hanging onto the wheel-well of a bus to get across town at 2am has to be experienced to be truly appreciated.
The one saving grace of Harrisburg is a 20+ mile "Greenbelt" that encircles the city. Thankfully a few of us have been able to maintain some trails just a 5 minute ride from where I live. Though in the past 2 years an encroaching development and newly posted "No Trespassing" signs threaten our little piece of woods.
This little valley was super fun to come tearing through.
Though now you have to trespass to complete the trail that this leads to.

Gainesville is really great for bicyclists; as much as a small town can be. All buses have bicycle racks, and many of the major roads have bicycle paths. Apparently 60 miles of roadways here have bike lanes, which I wouldn't disagree with. We also have a 16-mile paved bike trail that passes partially through a prairie preserve area, and the rest parallel to a state highway. If I need to cross an intersection, I can get in the left turn lane without fear that I would be run over--at least any greater fear than if I was in a car.
Also, please wear a helmet if you're riding around cars. It doesn't take too much to fuck up a head. Regardless of how good a rider you are, shit happens. A guy pulled out in front of me last year and I hit the front of his car. I hit the ground with my handlebars (magically my hand didn't even get a scrape), the side of my head, and then my chin. I was wearing a helmet, so a busted chin and a few stitches was the only damage.

I have a Huffy mountain bike I got for free from a high school friend, that happens to ride in mountain bike competitions now. She is 5'1 and tiny, but she kicks all sorts of ass, and her bike cost much more than her car (which she refers to as her bike transporter). She got the Huffy in a raffle or something and never used it. Now it is my buddy.
It helps immensely. I work on campus, and only live about a mile or so away. It takes just as long for me to drive and find a parking space as it does to bike. During the school year, I imagine it will save me a lot of hassle when the parking lots are actually full (commuter lots are a nightmare here). We have a bus that comes to our apartment complex, free campus route, so I can always take that if it's raining. Right now, I ride to work whenever I have day shifts, but I don't care to be on the bike at midnight around here.
It's not much, but for free, it certainly does the job.
Oh, also important to note, this town is SUPER bike friendly. The roads all have 'Share the road' signs and we have those extra paved edges and flush curbs everywhere for bike access. All the grocery stores have bike racks, too. I should really invest in some way to carry groceries so I don't have to take my car for a 1-2 mile trip. We have a lot of foreign grad students on campus that are bike happy, and a local charity helps recycle bikes for the foreign students, too. The entire town is outfitted for bike use.

Just got back from a nice round trip; to school for class, to my credit union, to the electric company, to a coffee place (omg hipster), and back home. Perfect riding weather; slightly overcast.
Edit: And the other day I adjusted the shifting linkage; whenever I would change my gear (on the rear cog), it would sometimes skip back and forth between two gears. If any of you are having that problem, refer to this video:

IMO I would look into a hybrid (mountain-ish bike with road tires) or a cross (road-oriented bike with slightly meatier, treaded tires) bike. With a road bike, you have to be careful... it makes me cringe every time I go off a curb at speed. However, they're a bit more efficient for long-distance rides; it's easier to go faster, and they have skinnier tires, which give less resistance to the road.

Coldsnap, that's really nice. I know a few people with the same model. I was going to go with the bull horns, but the bike shop wanted $20 more than the bar I got; I adapted to the Gary bar just fine, too. Are you running it free-wheel or fixed?
I have a GT Timberline mountain bike with Marzocchi bomber front suspension. It's an awesome bike for trail riding but I have only been road riding it for the last couple years unfortunately. I'm actually keeping my eyes open for a road bike now. I'll post a picture of my bike later.
Sinista, why not get a set of road tires for your mountain bike? It doesn't take long to change them over; you just need a set of tire levers and an air pump. It will significantly change your bike's riding characteristic.
That's not a bad idea actually. I have been just looking for a cheap used 10 speed on craigslsit that is decent. If I can find one cheaper than a set of tires that's the route I will go.

Also: The bike ride was pretty rad, just a quick 30 minute loop on smooth roads at a quick pace. However, the solo 3 am swim in the apartment pool was one of the creepiest experiences I've had lately. I could only last a few minutes of that.

My current pain is that you can't take regular bikes on the Metro Rail during peak hours (6:30am to 8:30am and then 4:30pm to 6:30pm), which are mostly the hours I'm riding the rail. I'm not averse to walking but I would much rather bike the almost mile from my apartment to the station in Long Beach and then the station in Manhattan Beach to work, then the return trips. Folding bikes, however, are allowed at all times. I like this way this one looks and I could replace the seat easily enough.
If the TNL bike enthusiasts have nothing bad to say I'll be heading to the bike shop in the LBC to see if they can get me a good deal.
That's pretty cool, and I imagine that it would work really well for the city. If it's not too heavy, and the hinges seem durable, I wouldn't disagree with it.
Everybody around here is riding these minimalist one speed bikes that are the size of touring bikes (not BMX). I don't "get it", anybody care to explain? Is it just a trendy thing for cruising around town?
I bought a bike from the Salvation Army next door while I was working at GC. I enjoy it and ride it to work now since my car broke down and work is only a mile or two away. Sometimes I use it at night to stop thinking of things and get some excercise, but it's been a good investment thus far.

Min'e a mountain bike, but I only ever ride it on the one gear. My rear brakes also don't work, and I suspect the front wheel is on wrong, I hear a faint rubbing noise. It doesn't have a quick release and I had to take the wheel off to move it a few times, and I'm not very handy with mechanical sort of things, might've put it on wrong. Still rides fine, though.

I wouldn't really chock it up as that. It's not like spinners or something; it's a mechanical "fad" that at least does something. It's a completely different riding sensation than regular free-wheel bicycles, though. While many people choose to forego brakes, it's not like you're going to roll to your doom; you can slow down by resisting the forward motion of the pedals or simply skid your rear tire. Flat tires. My tire was flat so I pumped it up and it held air. I got several miles from home and the thing blew out like a car in the movies like *POW*. So then I was in the process of moving and I didn't fix it. After I got all moved in here I fixed it and was stoked. The next day I went to ride the thing and my back tire was flat again. I looked at it and it was like somebody had cut the sidewall with a razor blade. I decided it was against me and said fuck it. That was four years ago.
It took me about 8 months for me to get around to fixing my bike. It wasn't really an issue with cost; I just didn't feel like it.
It wouldn't take much to fix yours up... Just a few fresh tubes and a set of tire levers (just a few bucks). Yay Wal-Mart.
I'm pretty sure I have several tubes and I definitely have the levers. I was just feeling defeated (the last slash of the razor or whatever happened while I was home alone with the bicycle in my garage) and didn't even want to think about it to the point where I pretty well forgot about the thing.

I'm thinking about getting a new bike in the future, since mine is rusty and having some problems (the gears are not cooperative and there's some vague grindy noise and vibration that makes me uneasy). Don't really know what to look for, thought I would seek advice here.
I have a generic women's mountain bike right now that I got for free. I ride on sidewalks that have uneven spots, over small grass patches, and sometimes on roads that are not very lovely. One of those back racks with a bag might be nice since I've got a lot of shit to take to and from class and for research.

I ride a road bike in all of those conditions provided. The only area where it's really out of its element is sand.
How many miles will you be riding each day?
Not much at all. I make frequent trips to and from campus, usually two round trips each day, but it's maybe 5 miles total if that. My back is kind of crappy so I really hate the lean-forward mountain bike setup, that also factors in.
I thought road bikes didn't do well with bad pavement. Wouldn't it be really bumpy for them?

Well I was planning on buying used, I don't have the cash for a brand new bike. Just trying to get a feel of what type to hunt around for.

It's common for bigger cities to have bike shops that carry a ton of used quality bikes as well.

This is a tiny rural college town, haha. Our bike shop has absurd prices and rip-off accessories. I've been there, they weren't interested in being helpful unless I was buying from them directly.
Sounds like you're gonna have to go to a different town or stfu.

Nomi, it sounds like your deraileur is shot. A good bike shop can fix this for about $30-60, but if you have a dick shop (like most) you're probably looking at closer to $100. The grinding means you've probably needed a new chain for a while and have likely trashed your cassette as well. Honestly, that Huffy isn't worth sinking any cash into, just get a good used bike.
As far as the 'road vs mountain' frame deal, you generally always trade weight for durability. Frames generally come in three materials: steel, aluminum, or carbon. You can get a road bike, but you'll likely want to stay with a steel frame with heavy duty rims. Aluminum is much lighter and doesn't rust, but also far less durable and more expensive- it probably won't hold up to rugged terrain, and once you dent it, it's shot. I'm a courier (20-40 miles per average day) and I ride a steel mountain frame over mostly road, rugged pavement, and paved brick, much like you.
Basically what I'm saying is, a heavier road bike or lighter mountain frame should be just fine for what you are doing. Also, avoid shocks and be sure to get slick tires if you go with a mountain frame.

Gotcha. That helps a lot. I'll look around at local offerings. Don't really need a bike shop for used ones here, tons of graduating students are constantly selling their bikes off.

Ever since my move to Redmond, I was dismayed how nothing is within walking distance and public transportation, while decent, doesn't serve my area past 6:45 PM (although in Redmond's defense, almost no one along the route takes the bus). I've been walking to school for about 50 minutes to get some mandatory exercise for the first few weeks, but I finally got around to getting the abandoned bike in my garage fixed. The front wheel was detached and the seat stand was shot, but the local chain bike shot reattached the wheel for free and replaced the seat stand for about $18. So here it is, my GT Mountain Bike.

I also got the Giro helmet and a Kryptonite bike lock for free as they were also abandoned in the garage.
Question. How much does it cost to add a stand for the handlebars so that they'll be at the same height as the seat? The bike shop would charge me $45 for the part, but I wanted to get this board's opinion before I commit. Go for it, or look for another shop and see if they offer it at a cheaper price?
Also, I'm looking to replace the seat with something more comfortable. The same shop had a Forte Men's Contour Saddle on sale for $26, which ends on Sunday. Good deal, or should I look for another seat?
Besides chain lube, what other accessories would I need? Any specific brands of tire pumps I should look into, or are they all the same?
As far as your handlebars, they shouldn't be the same height. You can adjust their sweep however. Just loosen up your headset and turn them until it's comfortable- you don't want to bend your wrists. $26 for a comfort saddle is a fair deal, but you should expect your ass to be sore for a week or so, much as when you first got into teh gehy secks.
As long as it'll pump your tires, any pump will be fine. Keep a patch kit handy, preferably with tire levers. It's also useful to have a spare tube.
EDIT: Also be wary of over-lubing your drive train. This is a common noob mistake.
This happened today on my way to the train station. The chain just up and slipped off of the derailleur while I was pedaling at a pretty fast speed. I totally had no expectation of this, swerved into a ditch and went flying. That part was pretty cool and I don't mind the wounds, but my left arm is fucked up. No reason for that to happen, I just bought this Shimano XT and had it installed by the bike shop. I was able to put the chain right back on, but still. I guess I'll have to take it back. :(
Anyway. 1&2 are my left arm. Nothing bad, just that scrape, but since my arm took the brunt of the blow, that's where the pain is coming from. 3&4 are my left knee. Funny that a paper cut will make me pass out and this didn't phase me. 5 is my hip, but I can't get a good pic of it without getting my cock in the picture... but it is really just a bigger version of the scrape on my arm.
That sucks. Bike injuries are a pain in the ass, but at least they're usually flesh wounds. Hope you heal up soon, and that the bike wasn't rattled more than the chain.

Headed out to meet up with an informal First Friday night ride around the local "Greenbelt".
Something like 23 miles through everything Harrisburg has to offer.
Riverfront, industrial ruins, ghetto, historic Paxton Cemetery, few miles of wooded single-track, hill bombing through Reservoir Park toward the State Hospital Grounds (where Girl Interrupted was filmed), wicked fast boardwalk runs through swamps at Wildwood Lake, then back down the Riverfront to City Island. Stopping at a couple bars along the way to replenish backpacks with fresh 6-packs. The reward is in the risk. Good times.

So I just went to the doctor and I have some bone spurs growing on my elbow, which are causing the recurring pain. This is a result of the bike accident, so that sucks.
I have to try some exercises for two weeks and if those don't work I'll have to get surgery on my elbow. :(
