What Are You Playing? - August 2008

Gimme the Gravity Gun and something to use it on in Portal 2, Half-Life 3 can fuck off.

Half-Life is amazing and probably the best single player FPS ever made (well, right there with Shock 2 and Deus Ex, if those are FPSes).

Half-Life 2 is really, really good. Not quite up there, but the episodes come close. I'm having trouble thinking of single player FPSes since HL2 that are better than it.

Only one I liked as much/more is Bioshock. HL2 was insane when it came out. I agree it has it's slow parts, but as a whole it's a damn good game. I'd put Episode 2 over Episode 1 as well.

What makes you like HL1 more than HL2? Unless you hate the vehicle parts, almost everything's an improvement over the original.

The combine troops are nowhere near as fun to fight against as the original's marines and alien grunts. They seem pretty mindless, for whatever reason. Not as agile? AI movement nodes don't work as well in HL2's environments? I don't know for sure, but something seemed off, dull, and simple about 'em.

The physics puzzles and vehicle segments weren't bad, but the pacing of the original was so perfect. Awesome situation after awesome situation, and I can't think of a single area I'd pinpoint as significantly worse than the rest. Xen included.

The weapons rocked HL2's overall, too, and between the smaller environments and the seemingly faster running speed, HL1's combat seemed faster paced.

HL2 was ridiculous in terms of presentation, though, and that helps make it a close call.

Right now i am playing Ico cause i wanted something short to play, and a platformer/puzzler sounded nice. This is now my 3rd attempt at beating the game because previous attempts were stopped by new releases. Cant wait to finish this one.

HL1 > HL2, easily.

You're a spy or something who's chillin' on the beach, the bad guys show up in early levels and say things like "See you at level 22, chump!" and so on. Only game besides maybe Bionic Commando that had a map overview level select deal, you can call up a shop and buy upgrades for your character, and the bosses look neat.

Plus it got a namedrop in Scott Pilgrim, and I appreciate that. :D
