we're all gonna die someday...

i was talking with a friend of mine about what gamming would be like if/once the original developers of certain series and franchises pass away. i was thinking a lot about dragon quest and megaman. what's gonna happen when toriyama kicks the bucket, or sugiyama (the composer) goes on the the next dimension? we've seen how capcom will totally churn out another megaman game even if inafune's not involved (mm6 and x6 are good examples). are these titles gonna continue 'cause they make money for the companies, or will they put it aside for new things to come along? we're already seeing tons of remakes and compilations of older games that it may not even matter down the line if the original creators are alive or not. so long as remakes can be made, there's money to be had.

i'm not sure i wanna even SEE a dragon quest game if toriyama's not involved...or hear it for that matter if sugiyama's dead, too. so what are your thoughts on this?

Most series' around for over a long time end up being taken over by different staff even when the original creators' are alive anyway so I don't think game developers dying will affect whether popular franchises will continue or not in most cases.

Here's the big one: Metroid. See, this already happened once.

Gunpei Yokoi worked on the first three games, but Nintendo never bothered to rekindle the series until Fusion on the GBA and Prime on the GameCube. I think both were fairly competent as successors to Super Metroid, myself. I'm not totally worried.

Just get over that series will be taken over by other people. Just don't play them, or don't play hardly any games at all. It's going to happen.

We can probably live without massive franchised sequels anyway.

Coincidentally, after playing Metroid Prime 3 I found myself wishing everyone at Retro would die as well.

Isn't Ninja Gainden a good example of this? I know Itagaki wasn't around for the original installments.

The thought of death coming to those who pull the levels on the Sequel Machines doesn't exactly keep me up at night. Besides, Itagaki is a bad enough dude to keep making games post mortem, and I've been keeping my fingers crossed that Miyamoto will get Yokoi'd on the side of a road since Twilight Princess.

well then, how many long running game series are left that even have their original developers/teams still working on them? i guess it's not very many at this point...

Look at SNK's IPs, they totally suck now (only exception may be KOF XII).
