GDC gameplay video.
Want.
Gamepro #248 has a 2-page spread previewing the game and includes a pic of Harley updated. I need to find a hi res to turn into a wallpaper.
I want this to be good so badly, but I am not letting myself get excited at all until I see multiple good reviews roll in. The odds of failure are just too high.
Just watched a stealth mission video. I haven't been following this one too closely, but the Sam Fisher style gameplay is VERY hard to nail down correctly. The game has the look, I'll give it that.
That trailer is very slick, I think these guys might pull this off quite well. Very excited.
Its been so long since that last Splinter Cell game. I think Batman subbing for Sam Fisher should be just fine. Its awesome this game is coming out during the Summer. More great Summer games please.
The Eurogamer hands-on makes this sound like the best thing ever kinda.

At the heart of the fighting is the combo system, a time-based arrangement requiring you to chain moves together in order to keep your points multiplier rising. When you're playing well, jumping off someone's chest and landing on someone else's head, before backflipping to unteeth the weirdo coming at you out of the shadows, you'll almost hear a drum-beat in your head, telling you exactly when to hammer the buttons. It's strange enough, after years of disappointments, to find a developer that really understands what a Batman game should feel like, but stranger still, perhaps, to realise that what it should feel like is a mixture of elegant brawling and rhythm action.
I want this to rule so much.
me tooo
The optimism for this game is unbelievable. You guys will be disappointed.
It can't be as good as it looks. But if it's decent, I'll be happy.
I am hoping it will end up pretty good judging from the videos so far but, even if it ends up being a 7/10 that's better than 99% of the Batman games out there.
tru dat
I just saw a couple videos for this. The combat looks kinda clunky, like if you miss a stealth kill you're going to be doing a lot of flailing about. Still, I'd love to play it if only for the trip down BTAS memory lane.
g0zen! Also! WTF is your avatar?
What, you don't recognize me?
Good god man! It's not a flattering picture.
Yeah well, that was taken right after my Dolphinoplasty.
How about this one?
I only remember gozen as a character from Chuckie Cheese.
aka haunting nightmares.
Jewphin
So theres gonna be a CE of this for the low, low, price of $100
Quote:
* Waynetech Batarang Storage Box
* 12” In-Game Design Batarang (stand attached)
* Dr Young’s Journal (50 page full color character encyclopedia)
* 2 Sleeve DIGI-Pack Including Game and Behind the scenes DVD containing Interviews with Mark Hammil and Kevin Conroy (voice actors for Joker and Batman, respectively)
* Exclusive Collector’s Edition Challenge Map DLC
* Manual
I may have to get that
Gozen I've missed you!
I want that CE.
That sounds like one of the better CEs if the Batarang is quality (like at least on par with Bioshock's Big Daddy figurine, as opposed to the crap figures they gave us with RE and SF4... fuck you Capcom), but $40 extra? Jesus.
fall out 3 came with that cool ass bobble head
And if you went full retard like me, a pipboy clock.
i still want that clock
I dont know - Im a big Batman fan and all, but I think $100 is a little too high for basically the game + a Batarang on a stand.
im more interested in the interviews, honestly
That's what YouTube is for, noob. :p
:p
Best game ever!
2nd best game, Ghostbusters is going to be the greatest game ever
Neat!
There is a lot of prison rape in Arkham isn't there?
Whatever floats your boat.
Presenting his buttarang.
That was bad
Arleen Sorkin is reprising her role as Harley Quinn!
Don't let them know that I will pay 20 american dollars to have a cartoon series skin pack as DLC.
Only if it's the "whipped cream" skin.

So, it turns out there's a brief demo of this on PS3 store kiosks. I had no idea until it was actually there in front of me; how has this not been mentioned on the blogs and such? Anyway, I had an... interesting experience with it, and proceeded to write an emo-tastic LJ entry about it. You can see my wallow in self-pity here if you like, but for the rest of you, here's the relevant part:And after typing ["arkham asylum" wal-mart] into google, I found some, I'll be honest, better impressions here and here.Quote:
At the electronics section, I checked out the video game demo kiosk systems. To my delighted surprise, the PS3 had a demo of Batman: Arkham Asylum. I hadn't seen anything about a demo online, so I was rather excited by this turn of events. It turned out to be a challenge room demonstrating the game's melee combat system, completely failing to represent the stealth predator aspect of the game, but still, what was there was pretty nice. The combat was smooth and well-animated, with a simple but satisfying combo scoring system - for each consecutive hit, your score multiplyer goes up. Whiff a punch, get hit, or wait too long between attacks, and it resets to zero. Not to worry though, whenever an enemy's about to attack you, there's ample warning to hit the triangle/Y button and thus cancel into a counterattack. It was particularly cool how, when the game realizes you're about to land the final blow on the last enemy in a group, it zooms in and slows down for a dramatic finish to the fight.
Yes I realize I just opened myself up for some epic trolling.
There's nothing to troll. Nothing you said surprises anyone, which is the most damning thing I can possibly say.
Yeah, while on a snack run for my branch at Target yesterday I saw some mouth breathers playin Arkham Asylum and they would not relent the controls. I'll try to get some time in with it today.
Got the demo at work a few days ago. I didn't try it very long but came away with less excitement for the game,

Interview with Paul Dini about Arkham.
I pre-ordered the standard edition from Amazon (you save $7) no tax and free 2day shipping with Prime.
Everything I've read here lines up with my expectations for the game, so I'll keep my reserve live for now. I'm sure the demo will be available well before the game actually hits, so I'll make my final decision then. Seeing as the demo is all action, zero stealth, it's too early to say how everything fits together.
Kind of weird that they'd release an action-only demo for a game billed as stealth/action. It's definitely easier to understand at a kiosk, though, so I'll cut them a little slack.

Steam day one please.
Just played this on my break, the people I saw playing must have been developmentally disabled. I cleared the challenge room in about 5 minutes, got hit a few times. Combat flowed really well, had fun changing it up with a strike, cape stun, dodge, counter knock out. Day One.
According to an Ad in Home on PS3.
Play as the Joker is console exclusive challenge rooms for the PS3.
Still not enough to make me buy it over there.
Platform exclusive content: Worst shit ever?
Agreed. It'll be around like Vader and Yoda eventually.
Oh man, it's GFWL? Cheaper and Achievements...sign me up.
That blows but I always like to think that the added time will make it better so I don't mind so much. I still really wanted to play it soon though.
New date: August 25th
Rocksteady is including PhysX support in this, which is another step towards this being the ultimate PC release in terms of features.
Now you get 360 controls, Achievements, and PhysX support for $10 less MSRP.
Soooooo the cape looks slightly more like a cape. Groovy?

I'm sure that's how people feel about touches you put on animation as well.
I wonder if Emmy's are magnetic if you put them next to each other?
How silly of me, gold plating isn't magnetic!
Good point. They are really heavy. I mean, more than you'd think.
:chick:
I'm paying full price day one of this one. You're a douche if you don't, so they went the extra mile for us. This isn't some day late dollar short EA PC port.
Which means it'll run like a dog on ATI cards with PhysX on (I have a Radeon 4870). I wish a pc demo was released so I know how it'll run on my pc and so far the game isn't listed on any digital distribution sites like Steam or Gamersgate. My dvd drive is acting up and doesn't read some game discs for some reason (drm on disc, type of disc used..etc..whatever) so a digital version would be nice as I'm in no mood to troubleshoot my pc.
edit: My mistake..its now under Steam's coming soon list for September.
PC GAMING! YES!
I didn't think much of PhysX effects, but seeing it in action in Mirror's Edge has changed my mind. It makes for some really cool effects.
Hahaha. Call me when your flapping papers and realistic flipped over recycle bin contents affect gameplay in any way.
When they do, it's only a $300 card upgrade! :D
It might not affect gameplay but it will certainly affect your immersion in the game. I am all for progress but my PC can't handle any new game so I will settle for the console port when it is under $20
I dunno, how does a professional dogcatcher still have thumbs left to play a video game?
Well I assume you just applied to the county office. Were you drafted somehow?

Well, Dead Space was only a week later. I'm with you on the horribly long Mirror's Edge delay.
