Canadian Election Thread 2008

If they were arguing over an issue that pertained directly to our country, I might be able to see the "coalition"'s point, however since this is them fighting over how much money their parties get I find the whole issue seem petty and makes the coalition members look like a bunch of children. These parties were smearing each other left and right months ago and now they are trying to convince us they're bosom buddies and the right choice for the country.

They've done a great job driving uncertainty into our economy. What's most pathetic about this is if they really didn't want Harpers proposition to pass they could have all voted against it without this drama.

Oh whatever. As if any of this is "democratic". People didn't vote for Jack Layton so he could let Stephan Dion lead the party. This coalition is nothing but a slap in the face to the entire multi-party system. Not only that but both sides have been playing hot and loose with the election system for 5 year straight now. Enough is enough -- get down to REAL business.

Especially since, as quoted above, their bitching made Steven Harper redact and reform the portions of his bill that they didn't like. This is nothing but a grand stand, and a bullshit one at that. So stop with the playing dumb shit you're pulling. OH HE PROROGUED THE PARLIAMENT! WHAT A SCOUNDREL! As if what the Libs just pulled was any better. AND led to this course of action in the first place. Liberals didn't get their way right now, so they cry foul. That's the entire boil down of the story as it stands.

Ignatieff is pretty good, though. I like him. But I didn't vote against Ignatieff, I voted against Dion. And I don't want him running my government. Nothing has changed in the past 7 weeks.

That's exactly what happened BEFORE all of this drama. This is nothing more than political theatre and power grab ass. And pathetic, yet somehow this is being seen as the right thing to do by some people. Stephan hasn't said anything that will stimulate the economy that really trumps what Harper is doing, except for the knee-jerk reaction handouts he's promising everyone (that will tax a strong deficit on this country, something Harper has been able to avoid).

But all in all Harper shouldn't have even tried to pass that bill. It's inexcusable, but like you said -- they don't have a majority and can't pass shit without a majority consensus. So what's the problem here?

Oh whatever to your whatever. ALL of this shit is democratic. Do I think the Liberals should be pulling this shit? No. I don't. I also think Harpers head got too big for itself and he thought he could get away with anything. So that's why when he was saying we should all work together and cooperate what he was really saying was you should all do what i tell you and if you don't like it you can call me on it. And they did. I said this coalition would last about a week and guess what, I'm right, they are already talking about how it won't work anymore.

One last thing:

"Liberals didn't get their way right now, so they cry foul" can so easily be turned around and used for the Conservatives it's really scary. When retard MPs start throwing around terms like sedition and treason it belittles the entire government. I have no desire to see Canada's political system be turned into an American pissing contest between two parties but Harper has taken things to such extremes that I see just that. With Harper leading I can never see myself voting Tory.

The problem is "anymore" has been less than a week. If something doesn't have the legs to go past a week without inner turmoil splitting it apart then it shouldn't have been brought up as any kind of legitimate form of government. It's bad leadership and makes us look bad to the world. By "bad" I mean not a place foreign business will be keen on dropping money in. What Dion has done (again, for no good reason) is potentially dupe (accidentally, I do believe he is clueless and didn't MEAN to do this maliciously) millions of dollars out of Canada's coffers for his own selfish gain. The term you're using, "calling them on it" already HAS a place in our system. It's called the opposition demanding reform based on certain terms. And that's what already happened, and that's how things have been done with a minority government since we were all eating crumpets and drinking tea. The bill was already reformed before these stupid theatrics. Harper took the scissors to his own bill before any of this made Global news.

I don't know how, with this economy we have and with what Dion is saying he will do, any responsible adult can vote anything but Harper. I don't care what you think about personality and if he's a douche, with a minority government he's shackled down to earth and his policies have kept this government running at a surplus at a time where NO governments are running at a surplus.

You keep blaming Harper because he tried to pass a bill that they found unacceptable. The problem here is that bills like this are always put on the table in one form or another. There will be another by the Tories, and there will be still be ones going through when the Libs get another kick at the can, too. This was grand standing at its finest, and unnecessary fanaticism I don't want in my government. The Liberals and NDP are responsible for their own actions and reactions -- not Harper. So stop pointing the finger as if that over reaction was his doing.

The Tories sat by for well over a decade while thieving sponsorship bills were passed and the only response we got from the Liberals in power were smiles and taunting waves. They didn't cause an uproar and turn the government on its head. They raised their voice and, eventually, turned things around by bringing shit to light and working hard to be fiscally responsible. The Libs need to learn how to be graceful in defeat.

And guess what? Bob Rae bows out, and Ignatieff/Count Dracula takes the top spot for the Libs.

I'm still not sure how Bob Rae can even be in politics after what a horrible job he did in Ontario as an NDP.
