I can only assume, as above, that it's because he did get a kill before all that happened. He got that Under Auto shot on a CyberDisc, which must have done it.

You are the luckiest dude in this game, bar none. I'm amazed you didn't die at the end of Part 4.

X-Com promotions can be really bizarre. It often seems that lucky and not skilled people get promoted. Personally, losers who get promoted in my game are kept in the Skyranger to provide a morale boost with little chance of being killed.

I usually play X-com on CD32, you might want to try running the iso through an emulator. Someone made a freeware online x-com game, which is quite good for VS. plays.
