The big thing here is that all of the games on this service will be XP and Vista compatible. So awesome.
Make sure you sign up for the beta before the 7th. If you do, you'll get one free Interplay game when the service finally launches.
I think I may be missing a disc for Freespace 2 so maybe I'll grab that, though I want to wait on playing it again for when I have a decent flight stick. Sacrifice was also awesome and I haven't played that in forever.
Good find, though damned where I'm going to time to play those.
do they have the lucasarts (ADVENTURE) games yet? I'm dying to actually pay for them
lol I actually have all the games they have up there on the front page.
Just received my beta key email so check your emails! I don't have time now to check out the service until later or tomorrow but if you do give it a try leave some impressions.
Hmph. Didn't get one yet.
I purchased Fallout for 5.99 and immediately got a coupon code for a free Interplay game and of course I used it for Fallout 2. I never played either game (yea..shame on me). The downloads were fast and there is no "Good Old Games" interface or anything..just download what you bought. You'll find a list of your purchased games in your account page with links to download the game executable, wallpaper, manual and old school reference sheet and the fallout soundtrack. Each executable is its own GOG installer and each game goes under "GOG.com" in the start menu.
The games work flawlessly under my Vista install and on my hdtv the games fill the screen (though I guess that will be different depending on what your display is). Since each game is its own executable you can always save it to DVD with all the extras though of course you can redownload them at the website anytime. I'm impressed and I hope these guys do well.
I'll pick up the MDK games next since I never played the original and only briefly played the Dreamcast MDK2.
After being hooked on Beneath a Steel Sky, I decided to support the DRM-free version of Painkiller on GOG and nabbed Fallout 1 out of curiosity.
Question, now: The PC version of Earthworm Jim 2 offered here... does it have all of the enhancements from the Saturn version?
I'd think "not making you drag your Saturn out into daylight again" would be a pretty decent enhancement.
My Saturn is hooked up and ready to receive Sexy Parodius whenever I decide it proper, Mr. Dawg.
Don't worry, she likes it.
404 Error. Probably doesn't work on mac.
I used my beta entry to get Fallout 1 and 2 for the price of one game.
I was going to make another purchase, but this time instead of just standard debit card information, it asked me for my bank account number.
No matter what, it won't let me purchase games without first storing my bank account number. So, I don't use this website anymore. Shame.
Strange. I've picked up a few games and the site has never asked for anything other than a credit card. TRY USING ONE OF THOSE.
Same here. I used my debit card, too.
No problems.

RISE OF THE TRIAD COMING SOON $5.99
THEY'LL BURY YOU IN A LUNCHBOX CONFIRMED!
DOPEFISH!
EXPLOSION! EYEBALL FLYING AT YOU! YES!
Duke3D Atomic Edition NOW, though.
Also, all of this:
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/a...1&d=1235676922
Rise of the Triad is still the best news though, yeah.
Where's my Raptor: Call of the Shadows and Commander Keen? The Keen pack on Steam sucks because it's missing two games.
RISE OF THE TRiAD IS OUT NOW
$6
I can't wait. I've been waiting for this for 15 years!
Dude, you could have just played the game ;p
RotT rules. Does this service 'patch' games so they are compatible with newer OSes and hardware out of the box, or do you still have to fiddle with Dosbox and stuff?
I need to get my home PC running again, this is exciting news.
For some reason I can't create an account. I think it has something to do with being at work. These computers suck. When I get home I want to pick up the Fall out games. I heard amazing things about them. I also hope they have or if they don't get soon Xcom. I remember watching a friend play that back in the day and I have always wanted to play it.
X-COM and Terror From the Deep (the only worthwhile games in the series (ASIDE FROM APOCALYPSE IF YOU'RE A MASOCHIST LIKE I WAS)) are on Steam right now. Cheap. X-COM runs better than TFTD but both can be fixed by tweaking DOSBox.
Thanks, I didn't know that X-com was on steam. I'll pick it up. Hopefully "tweaking" DOSBOX" means click one button because I'm PC retarded.
LUDICROUS GIBS!!
Holy shit I forgot how good this game was.
lol @ Buy a 486.
Isn't RotT open source now?
Can anyone help me play RotT with fake mouselook? These Wolf3D controls are driving me nuts.
I googled this but did check out the linked site.
"As far as I know, a OpenGL port of RoTT doesn't exist.
However, there is a port that supports mouselook and resolutions up to 1024*768. It's called WinRott. Latest version is 2.18. Also note that you'll have to download a different port version, depending on whether you're using the shareware version or the retail version.
http://home14.inet.tele.dk/Bna-Info/Side2ny.htm"
I can use my just-purchased, DRM-free version on this! Neat!
Also, newness! Pro Pinball Timeshock!
Timeshock is pretty much the best traditional pinball videogame ever.
I take it the PC versions are much better than the PS1 versions?
'Cause those pretty much sucked.
I like most of the Pro Pinball games, but Timeshock is definitely the top of the heap. Fantastic Journey is pretty awesome too, though really punishingly difficult.
I think I'll pick that up I have been in the mood for a pinball game and the one on live arcade just didn't appeal to me.
So my favorite adventure game of all time is up on Good Old Games:

You are all required to buy it, if you want to earn my love. Also, the money will be going to the original creators, and they do intend to do a sequel, so even if you already have it (like me) buy it anyway.
While you're at it, the first two games in the series are also available in an affordable two-pack.
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/tex_murphy_1_2
They're not as good and tend to have a lot of dick jokes and such, but they're cheap and worth playing.
GOG is awesome. I have gotten Descent 3 and Colin McRae Rally 2005 so far. It's amazing that these games work as well as or better than PC games that are one year old.
I plan on buying a couple games off of this a week
God, I forgot we had a GOG thread or I would have posted the news in here.
Frog, how would you rate the two games that were released after UAKM?
And yeah, GOG is probably my favorite digital download site. The service is practically perfect. Easy to use, guaranteed XP and Vista compatibility, a bunch of extras for each game, useful forums, NO DRM IN ANY WAY, etc. It just needs a better selection.
Pandora Directive: Really freaking good. Not as funny as UAKM, but better story, multiple endings, and stronger puzzle design. Arguably better than UAKM but I always favor the game with the better jokes.
Tex Murphy: Overseer: A solid sequel (actually a remake of Mean Streets done in the style of UAKM/PD), made on a very tight development schedule (9 months), using unproven DVD-ROM technology (it was the first DVD game) which resulted in a game with major technical flaws. I'm looking forward to the GOG release because I hope they'll address this and maybe get it working properly on modern machines, which is not easy.
Also: UAKM comes with a soundtrack! And they're pretty decent renders, too!
Just installed. Seems identical to the DOSBox version I've been playing over the last few weeks. No problems at all.
BTW Frog, I mentioned this in the other thread but I actually finished UAKM the night before this was announced. Kinda freaked me out when I saw the ad in my mailbox this morning.
It's a great game and I'm glad I followed your recommendation. I miss this genre so much.
It really annoys me how every game released using DOSBox has the game configured for the worst music card possible. Luckily UAKM is one of the few from that era that lets you configure the music devices in-game, so it's easy to change.
Yeah, the humour does go a long way to making UAKM the more charming game. Pandora Directive is still a fine game, though, and must play if you enjoyed UAKM.Quote:

So I did a little digging, and apparently Telltale also posted some UAKM scan on their twitter for no reason. Very interesting indeed. I also found a (not well sourced and potentially bullshit) claim that someone from Telltale straight up admitted that there were talks.
That's a really compelling partnership. I sort of doubt Big Finish has a lot of resources to put into a new game, so if they were intimately involved with whatever Telltale does I think it makes a lot of sense. Especially since the old games were kind of episodic to begin with.

Pandora is out. As has been said before, it's not as comedy-oriented as UAKM, but it's larger, has better puzzles, multiple endings, and an arguably better story.
Oh man, I forgot about this thread again.
I bought this and played through the first few minutes. I was surprised that the acting is noticably better than UAKM. ..which isn't saying much at all, but there you go.
I'm really excited to go through it over the long weekend.
I'm a little concerned about the two different game modes though. I don't like being time constrained in adventure games. At all. I figured I'd go with the regular mode but then I'd apparently be missing out on addional locations and puzzles. Any suggestions?
Go for the harder mode. You can downgrade to the easier mode at any time, but the inverse is not true. The timers are on like... bomb-defusing puzzles and shit like that. The bigger deal is that you can't get hints, but if you really want to, you can save, switch to easy, get a hint, and load.
Looks like GoG is no more. It makes me sad that a relatively popular service like this isn't commercially viable. Probably a blow to a lot of the smaller companies with games on the service too.
They say they're going to set something up for people whobought games to redownload them, so there's that at least. I didn't even download a few of the games I got.
mmmm... a poorly done publicity stunt? Maybe going out of beta and will return with an all new website? Don't know what to make of this pr statement but I guess we'll find out.
gog closes...updated with statement from pr guyQuote:
GOG's PR man Tom Ohle has responded, saying, "As the message on the site says, this doesn't mean GOG is gone. We'll have more to share in the coming days. No need to jump to conclusions :)"
What the hell? I love this site :(
This appears to be the worst marketing stunt in the history of ever. Check this out - they warned financial people to ignore the site for a few days.
Yeah, there's a lot of conflicting, poorly translated information flying around.
If the site is really closed for good, I'd be astounded. There wasn't even a hint of a rumor about this. GOG itself has been doing well by every account I've read. They even unveiled a contract with a new publisher just last week (the Age of Wonders guys)!
I'm hoping that this is just a site relaunch handled in the absolute worst way possible. Also: EA
And while I'm dreaming, I'd also like a pony.
If this winds up being a marketing stunt it will be the dumbest one in the history of ever.
My guess is that they are doing some kind of major change to their site sooner than they planned to. They were in the middle of a promo and had just put up Age of Wonders. Like, something unexpected happened and they were maybe planning to go out of beta or whatever soon enough that it made more sense to just go ahead with that rather than put in the resources to fix it. I'd go so far as to venture it's more likely something to do with their billing/payment infrastructure than any publisher dealings.
I really hope they're still around, though. GoG is one of the best gaming resources out there. I love that I could buy a game I always wanted to play back in the day for less than a good mixed drink, with no bullshit to deal with. I also discovered one of my favorite games ever (Outcast) through them.
Whatever is going on with GOG, it's going to be epic. Not the good kind of epic, obviously, but the kind where people making "10 Worst..." lists have to debate where in the top three to put it.
James
I hope they don't relaunch with DRM.
That's some retarded news, regardless of what actually happens.
The damage is done as it were. Any casting of doubt will make customers wonder what's going on, and the fact that we're left without a way to dl our content is as good as any for people to jump ship.
I'd really like to see the guy who thought this would be a good way to launch the non beta version.
He better be fired after this.
If the company fails, he doesn't need to be fired.
I just deleted a lot of shit to make room. Lol! I never really played any of it anyway...but still. Gay if its gone for good.
UPDATE 20.09.2010
First of all, we apologize everyone for the whole situation and closing GOG.com. We do understand the timing for taking down the site caused confusion and many users didn't manage to download all their games. Unfortunately we had to close the service due to business and technical reasons.
At the same time we guarantee that every user who bought any game on GOG.com will be able to download all their games with bonus materials, DRM-free and as many times as they need starting this Thursday.
The official statement from GOG.com's management concerning the ongoing events is planned on Wednesday. If you want to receive further information about GOG.com, please send an email to update_media@gog.com if you're a media representative or to update_users@gog.com if you're a user without a GOG account.
I wanted to buy more gamessssss
Why can't I give them my monies
What's funny is that I JUST looked and the message wasn't there. Saw ed's post, went back to reload, and it popped up.
Ed must be spamming refresh on that shit at work.
I refresh the GAF thread in between horrible, horrible work stuff!
I'd assume it has to do with some terms of service/contract that we agree to when we bought the games in the first place. Once they give us this last chance to DL, they can implement DRM and be ignored by everybody for being a god damned shithole after this.
Well, how tied must their hands be in this case. Seems strange to cancel with no warning. though unwarranted actions w/o notificationvhas happened before with these guys right?
@13 sec:
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/tnl/att...1&d=1285103185
HMMMMMM
I don't believe they ever offered that. So how can you show something you never sold? Hmmmm indeed.
Wow, I never thought we'd see the Infinity Engine games on a DD service. TORMENT PLS. NOT SO MUCH FOR ME BUT FOR EVERYONE ELSE.
I bought BG1, BG2, Icewind Dale, and Icewind Dale 2 + all expansions for like $15 a couple of years ago. I find the value of GOG and the like to be games that are tough to find, like Shadow of Magic.
I recently bought a similar compilation for the regular Baldur's Gate games. Still in print, cheap. Torment is still very expensive though.
And yeah, I'm on Shadow Magic the instant it shows up.
(What I really want is for EA to start putting up their back catalog. They have The Best Stuff.)
I bought a boxed copy of Shadow Magic 500 million years ago but never opened it. I bought it for the purty 2D grafs but it always felt like homework to install and play the thing.
I'd better sell off my Torment.
I just want to buy the Blood expansions...probably the game too because I bet I can't find it
So there's a crazy conference streaming now but the site is full and I can't get in.
News: It really was a stupid PR stunt. The site is fine and will be relaunched shortly (tomorrow?). Still no client, still no DRM.
dumbest fucking stunt ever
Well, they all but said outright that Atari's other Infinity Engine games will be following in Baldur's Gate's footsteps. BG The Original Saga, which includes Tales of the Sword Coast, will be $9.99 and available tomorrow.
Fire whoever came up with that fucking horrible idea.
Poor job by those guys. They'll probably lose some customers over this lame stunt. I'm a forgiving man so I'll continue to use their service if the games and prices are good but boy was this dumb.
Wow, beyond lame. Really in poor taste. I guess I like GoG as a service enough to let it slide, but I can't imagine this had any positive effect, either.
That's what I'm saying. I'll continue to buy shit that interests me at low prices, but this is not a good way for a relatively new company to garner trust from new customers.
Or from new publishers, for that matter. I can't imagine that Triumph Studios is happy to have this happen right after Age of Wonders appeared on the service. And I bet Codemasters is less than pleased that it occurred during a sale of their games.
They continue to insist that there was a technical issue and they had no choice in the matter. I don't know if I believe them or not.. I guess I don't really care. If it was a PR thing then I won't applaud them for it, that's for sure, but it didn't affect me personally and I didn't exactly hit the panic switch when that announcement first dropped. I guess at the very least they could have been more forthcoming with information at the beginning, it does seem like they went out of their way to make it seem like something it wasn't. There could have been a legitimate problem that required the site to come down, but yeah, they didn't need to push the doomsday idea.
Oh well, they're still around, still DRM-free, and they have some cool new games on the horizon.
Edit: Ah, looks like it was about the site leaving beta after all.
No such thing as bad PR. It was a gay stunt, but a lot more faggots are talking about them now than there were a few days ago.
You know, this was probably the worst site relaunch ever. ...but I can't stay mad at these guys.Quote:
First of all we would like to apologize everyone who felt deceived or harmed in any way by us closing down GOG.com without any warning and without giving access to your games. We apologize for that from the bottom of our hearts!
Now it's time we put an end to all the speculations once and for all. It’s true that we decided that we couldn't keep GOG.com the way it was… so we won’t. As you probably know by now, GOG.com is entering its new era with an end of the two-years beta stage and we're launching a brand new GOG.com with new, huge releases.
The new GOG.com will launch at 8.00 a.m. EDT (2 p.m. CET). Later today we'll provide you here 4 videos where you'll find all needed information on current events, as well as news on the new GOG.com, the upcoming big releases and the summary of the last two years.
Looks like Baldur's Gate + Tales of the Sword Coast will be up soon, maybe tomorrow. $10
blood
I don't think this is the kind of stunt that even raised awareness among people who weren't familiar with the service, it just alienated some of those that were. Getting you existing customers talking about what bullshit you just did isn't really bankable in the same way making real headlines with the casuals is.
People talked about it on forums. Those forums likely have new members since the service launched. Even with distaste it still raises curiosity and more people will learn about it. This is not counting any places - few as they may be - that posted the news to a new set of potential customers, complete with the brand new news about them launching out of beta to "fix" those sites previous statements about them closing. The uncertainly of their shutting down clearly had people wondering (see: people in this thread checking their site consistently for updates), and that still leads to more awareness. SSJN is correct here, I've seen more people talking about GOG in the last few days then when it launched.
So how many of you are still not going to make a backup of the shit you order?
I've got a \gog\ folder already.
It'd be nice if they threw a bone the people that were there day one when they had like 6 games to buy.
What would you like Dyne? Is the $6 or less that games often cost too much for you? If you want a free game, just go grab a pirated version.
I will not back up because I really don't care. I think I have 20 games from there, most bought during sales. I might have at MOST $150 invested into that site over the past two years. I spend that taking the family to dinner and a movie. GOG doesn't owe anyone anything.
This is that webcast streaming thing from earlier:
They're horrible and awesome and I cannot hate them!
