A prequel (Interest +1). To Phantasy Star (Interest +10). Online (Interest - 537). I'd mention the DS, but -526 is bad enough. Fuck Sega.Quote:

What Yoshi said. Fuck Sega.
Hopefully it's more PSO than PSU.
I'm gonna be the cautiously optimistic one in this wave of negativity.
I'm hopping on the cautiously optomistic route.
Maybe we can play as Red Ring Rico or Heathcliff?
Sigh. I still think Sega should have contracted BioWare to do a new singleplayer Phantasy Star rather than Sonic Chronicles.
I want this to have the gameplay of Monster Hunter, but the setting of PSO.
I also want it to have lots of cute mags.
I'm also cautiously optimistic. Sonic Unleashed (hate that name) seems to have promise and I loved PSO, so perhaps they can hammer out something decent.
The Phantasy Star series is going nowhere until Sega of Japan and America start communicating and funneling proper resources to support online play.
Yay, generic and kiddy character designs.
http://www.gamekyo.com/news28961_seg...ntendo-ds.html
Trainwreck ahoy.
Hey, I like half of those designs, I mean, how can you go wrong with a RAcast with a Beam cannon? Or whatever the character in the lower left is supposed to be, oh and look! some dude has a Sword!
my hopes for the game haven't been ruined yet.....
god sega, please don't ruin my hopes.
Whawhawhat? More PSO? HOT. HOTHOTHOT. When they say "Wi-Fi," though, do they mean REAL wi-fi, or just that local nonsense? And really, this should have been on the PSP, not the DS, even though I love the DS. And and, tell me this is going to be nothing like that PSU garbage.
But... calling it "Phantasy Star 0" is kind of trashy, and I can understand why people would be pissed.
Given that Sega has not been providing the United States or Europe the same level of online support as Japan, I doubt the success of Phantasy Star Portable in Japan would mean much for its US prospects unless things change. The same goes for any future take on this series.
Come on, it's "PS0". You should be pumped!

Sega needs to cauterize their RPG(ish) department. Between Phantasy Star Online and the endless debasing of the Shining Force name they've got nothing to work with any more. I'm worried that they'll revive the Skies of Arcadia name as a mindless Diablo-clone someday. I'm mentally picturing a world with a few familiar place names and horribly over-designed characters where you endlessly click on monsters with the Wii remote, frequently entering slo-mo to trace a symbol on screen to cast a spell. Add in months of pre-release hype from Sega while everyone knows it's a waste of time, followed by lackluster sales and two sequels that get more and more desperate to inject life into a bad idea, and you've got the perfect Sega-style RPG update.

i liked pso. even card revolution. didn't get to play universe. i hope it plays well.
I'm excited about this. Also in the bandwagon of "I hope this plays more like PSO than PSU."
Yeah, Skies of Arcadia was mediocre to begin with. A Diablo clone would probably be an improvement. The original PSO was awesome at the time but Sega never put the effort in after the initial release despite that type of game continuing to evolve on PC.
They threw on monthly fees when they realized the game was popular yet it still had issues with hackers, CARD rev was a pretty good strategy spin-off but they lazily didn't upgrade the graphics/frame rate, and PSU managed to somehow be a step back instead of forward gameplay-wise and had some iffy character designs. The single-player campaign could have saved it if it was more developed.
Anyone know what Rieko Kodama is up to these days? I assume she's still at Sega being the lone co-creator of Phantasy Star still there.
Seriously, the fan run servers are far beyond anything Sega did with PSO.
I remember reading something about Kodama recently and it was definitely internal Sega. So she's probably working on some concepts that the fucktards at Sammy won't greenlight, like everyone else at Sega with talent.
Another cautiously optimistic hope for PSO instead of PSU.
I thought Skies of Arcadia was excellent at the time, thanks to the story, setting, and ship battles. The combat was pure RPG rehash, but then again so are most RPGs.
PSO started off fantastic. I sunk far too many hours into the Dreamcast version and picked up the Broadband Adaptor specifically for online play. And then... nothing happened. The game stagnated, and Sega started charging for it while putting out new versions that were pretty much the same as the old versions, complete with antiquated online options. That's a pretty half-assed approach to a series with the word "online" in the title.
I'd love a new PSO, but it would have to be in the hands of a company that either isn't Sega, or at least Sega Japan.
James
Not totally hot on a few of the character designs, but whatever. 14 classes in total, so the previous roster of PSO + the two new classes. Mags are back, as are Rappies.
Oh fuck yes. Hott (yes 2 t's)
Looks like shit...
The look is growing on me - or the environments are at least. Nice to see the locales getting more diverse, rather than relying on PSO's conventions.
Looks neat enough to me.
And yay for mags.
0 is the interest I have in this game.
you see, i kept seeing this on tnl, and thats initially why it took me so long to pick up psu, but once i did, I saw a markedly different story than you did. Psu introduced the photon arts for melee classes, which was a big change after playing pso for so long with the options of "swing hard and slow, swing fast and weak, or swing special weapon and rarely worth it". Now there were not only special skills to diversify the hunter experience, but they could be leveled up and for once actually produced a difference in he animation that gave you a real feeling of progress with your character.
plus each weapon had multiple photon arts, so you could use a focused strike one on a boss with few hit areas, but against groups or a long enemy, like de rol le, you could use a distributed damage arcing attack. also, i like how with your spells socketed to weapons,a force didnt just get stuck doing the max out fluids and port back when you are tapped, approach. you could carry multiple weapons with different slottings and that affected my force strategy. Also, for the dedicated offline player who jsut wanted a shiney sci-fi diablo clone, the introduction of player cards was significant, now you could team with ai teammates and add some variety to the single player campaign that was sorely missing in pso.
now ill admit, forceing me to play through the single player missions only as ethan till the end of chapter 3 was a horrid decision, and one of the ones that cost them a day one sale from a dedicated pso fan(though they did rememdy this somewhat in ambition of the illuminatus), but looking at psu, i really dont see how you could look at the evolution of the play mechanics and say it was a step backwards. yeah the story was cliched, but pso wasnt dostoyevsky either, so in areas that i can see a real issue of comparatives, psu improved pso in most ways, it just couldnt compete witht he hype and hive mind of the mmo community, who were busy basking in the brilliant originality of a game about orcs and elves.
that said, i am fully keeping an eye on this one, to see if the ds can hack an enjoyable pso. shrinking the game down to ds's hardware is going to require a lot of painful cuts, but if they keep photon arts for hunters and rangers, and provide a decent amount of offline stuff for me, this may yet turn out to be a good purchase.
Eh, not bad looking. Loved PSO, PSU was series-crushing trash on par with Virtual On Marz.
Isn't Marz what happened when Sega tried to add a "real story" to Virtual On and add a campaign mode to Virtual On: Force?
Marz represents everything that is wrong with Sega in 21st century (that and Sonic).
Not sure what you expected. It's a DS game.
This could be fun if it's executed well. PSO, while not coming close to classic PS (and as an aside, I don't want Sega to continue the main PS series, as it wrapped up just fine with 4 and doesn't need to be dragged out more), was still damn fun, and multiplayer dungeon hacks could work very well on a portable system. God only knows why Sega didn't do it with the PSP version, but if they get this one right I could see it becoming one of the most popular DS games yet.
I don't care what anybody says this game looks hot.
So this has been out in Moonspeak land since X-Mas. Anyone have this yet or know if its worth buying or borrowing from the internet?
It's Phantasy Star Online gameplay, shoehorned onto the DS. Complete with usual idiocy like having to constantly reset the camera if you want to target anything. The game also can't load more than one room into memory at once, so you get fade-to-white every time you move from one to another.
Worthless, absolutely worthless.
;_;
What about Phantasy Star Portable for PSP then? Any better?
I haven't played my DS since 2006. The case is literally covered in dust. This was the game that might have brought it out of hibernation, but that's looking doubtful now.
So it's out now in the US. Is it changed enough to make it worth looking into?
Gonna have to get it then.
No one wants to carry it? Not a good omen...
We only got one copy in per store. A guy just came in and wanted two copies. So I gave him the one I was going to buy and sent him to the other store to grab the one copy over there. I am now sad. Guess I keep playing FFIV!
From what I've heard, Gamestop is carrying it. Not sure about Wal-Mart (Didn't even think about checking Wal-Mart, now that I think of it. Opps). Pretty sad that Best Buy & Toys R Us are out of the loop, though. I'd figure they'd have it since they carry everything else.
There's a few GS stores here that have it. Tempting...
Toys R Us got 8 copies FYI. Just not on the actual release day. I think most of the stores did.
I've played it. Movement & targeting is painful without 2 analog sticks. Online play with random people lacks picture chat (shortcuts only), which means nobody will be able to walk you through your first run. No healing nurse / cube either, which sucks starting out.
PSU and PS:P (or PS:P2 when that comes out) are better by far, but nobody here seemed to like those besides me. Regardless, Phantasy Star belongs on consoles, and the JRPGs-only-on-handhelds rut since 2007 is pissing me off.
I was pleasantly surprised with PSPortable. I'd like to get the next one when/if it hits the States. Ad-hoc only is a bit of a drag though.
Is 0 at least good enough as a hold-over until PSP2? How are the levels, classes, gear, etc?
Leveling to 7 took 2 hrs. Classes are like PSO. I haven't seen gear/items above 5* yet. Grinding weapons added more stats than the introductory units. There should be picture chat for friend groups. Biggest drawback is D-pad & L-trigger for movement/camera. I suppose that can't be helped. =(
I don't know what to think of 0; I've invested ~3 hrs so far and I'd be awfully tempted to replay PS:P for my portable PS fix. I suppose one plus is that PS0 has free automatic and friend-only matchmaking services whereas PSU (technically still alive with ~200 ppl / night on PC/PS2) relied on dozens of lobbies and PS:P adhoc. (PS:P2 will support infrastructure mode.) Playing with non-randoms would add a lot to the experience, though.
Until recently, the only games I liked on DS were Animal Crossing and the original Phoenix Wright. Wizard of Oz is cool, though. Nice music.
BTW here's my info (RedCoKid, FOmarl, available 8-11 PM CT)

I didn't like PSU online, but I did like the streamlining they did with PSp. Guess I will wait for the sequel. :(
Nick: Samba

Available most of the day/night, but I'm only level 8 since my last save got wiped randomly :/
Hit level 18 today doing some random online games and progressing throughout single player so I can access more areas online.
So far random games haven't been terrible, but I've seen a few people with overpowered weapons and mags for sub 20 characters, which is to be expected if someone already has level 50+ people and are just transfering stuff via the community chest thing.
For anyone who has gotten past the first 4 or so quests:
What the fuck was with the Octopus tentacles 'tickling' the newman girl that came from outer space? Did they really think no one would get that reference?
None of those are Nintendo games, they're all great RPGs.
When describing the Ys (no apostrophe, faggot) remake and Nostalgia, great isn't the adjective I'd use. Disappointing and lackluster are far more apt descriptors.
So Story Mode lasts about 7 hours if you take your time reading. Then you get Hard mode. Then Super Hard once you beat Hard Mode and all its quests and a laughable 101 floor Tower Quest.
At least you level fairly easily by spamming random online games.
Also, slicers pretty much destroy the game, I got one back at level 7 or so and its still my main weapon because it rips through multuple targets and rapes most bosses lolfalz.
the publisher saved me some research and went out of their way to put the review score in the title of the game
lol
Dark Spire is the best DS game ever.
I thought it was pretty funny to be honest.
It is funny...but don't encourage him.
Just an observation, really, but how come the DS version of PS have real internet, and the PSP version gets AD-hoc? I thought the PSP was more powerful, seriously, why can't I do it in Monster Hunter also?
because no one plays PSP games
also God is doing you a favor by not allowing it in Monster Hunter..that game is putrid trash
Um, black people are. Okay, they're buying PSPs, and Madden, but you have a point, beyond that, no one really is playing it.
I know it sucks, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to play it in the same way I know that prostitute has the clap.Quote:

My copy of this arrived Thursday night from Amazon. I'm trying to get into this, especially since I know about three people locally that are playing and raving about this, but I'm not digging it so far. Maybe I'm just bitter, since a lot of games has brushed me the wrong way lately, but controlling in a 3D space with the D-Pad sucks ass, the level being divided into these tiny-rooms sucks ass, the character designs really rubs me the wrong way (Especially the in-game models)...
I think I would've liked this more if they had made it an overhead view with no camera control, even if it would be a departure for the PSO/PSU series.
I'm going to keep trying to play this, but I think I'll probably drop out of this PS0 rat-race pretty quickly.
