Google to Buy Valve?

File this under heavy speculation.

-There's nothing in the way of official confirmation at the moment, but tech website The Inquirer reports that "well-placed sources" are telling it that Google will be purchasing Valve "any second now." As the site points out, Google is likely less motivated by Valve's game development than its nigh-ubiquitous content distribution platform, Steam.

We, again, have no idea if this is on the money, but there have been a couple of indicators that lend a sort of credence. You may remember early last month when Valve said it was happy to talk about acquisitions, and just a little over a week ago Forbes' Chris Morris posited that Google could be going into game publishing.

Okay, they already have a browser out, now they want in the game business (more for the Steam service). How long before they take over rights to a Linux distro to get in the OS business?

Interesting. Oddly enough, this would only lead me to like Google and Valve even more.

This would make sense, especially with the Google Android based phone coming out later this month/early next month.

It's weird that Google is even more successful at being an all-encompassing monopoly and people applaud it. If MS were trying to do the same, there'd be a laundry list of complaints, some founded and some sensational conspiracy theories, that would follow. Google pulls the same shit (Google Chrome EULA an "accident?" Unlikely), and people think gee-wiz, aren't they just wonderful for wanting to make our lives easier, and doing it all for free to boot...

What about the Chrome EULA? I hadn't heard anything about it.

Seconded. Anything that strengthens Google in its impending battle with Microsoft sounds good to me.

When Google releases a retail operating system in beta form and charges for it (Windows 95), then they'll deserve the same venom Microsoft gets. Well, no they won't, but it'll be a start.

Google has done nothing but good with the products they've absorbed though, that's the big thing about them.

Check the Chrome thread. I brought the issue up orginally.

I also completely agree with Hero. Vistas SP1 having changes in it SPECIFICALLY because of Google immediately comes to mind.
