I absolutely agree with this.

OoT is a great game, but it looks muddy now. Windwaker is still agreeable. Fuck, especially if you bring emulation into the equation. No matter how much you crank up OoT you can only make it look so good with the textures it uses. You max out Windwaker and it looks like a brand new game. Seriously, most of you have seen the screenshots I've posted, it's insane what you can do when you max out resolution and AA on a cell shaded game.

That's pretty close to the truth, actually. The only home console I've played recently is the NES/Famicom since I can play it in 10 minute spurts, and often that is all the time I have. I think I turned the 360 on to play Daytona once.

I think 3D hit this baseline level of competency with the PS2 generation where games still look decent. They have good textures, scale resolutions nicely, have rudimentary lighting systems, decent animations, properly constructed characters with a decent amount of polygons, etc. But referring to the 32-bit/64-bit hardware, definitely.

First I wrote it, then I read it, then I reread it and then finally I paraphrased it in the response you quoted.

I said N64 games look like shit (attributing this to what's possible with the hardware) and many SNES games still look good (attributing this to the forced 2D most of them used, you'll note I didn't say ALL SNES games because the ones that attempted 3D and even cheaper quality ones are just atrocious to look at); at most my mistake was not putting a 'most' in front of 'N63 games'. I made no comparison between the two, never said it was universally better to do 2D over 3D and mostly just implied that certain styles age better than others. You then responded with some shit that sounds like I was implying that SNES games look better than all N64 games. I'm quite sure what I said, I'm quite sure about what you think I said and I'm furthermore incredibly sure that you think I said something I didn't and then talked out of your ass per usual.

Some PS2 games do scale really well (FFXII for instance, my god, those textures are insane) but I find that on average things like DQVIII look much better emulated than MGS3. Most of this is just opinion, though.

Broken record time- I would absolutely love to play a game with little to no textures, just as many polys as the processor could move plus funky lighting tricks. Virtua Racing on PS2 is the last game I can think of that worked that style.

I think I need the deluxe edition this time. That book completes the package. Too bad the plushy is so incredibly cheap looking.

Agreed. We sometimes forget 2D had to go through the Atari and NES eras before it got to the ones that age well, visually.

Also, in the "32-bit" era, there was no well balanced machine. PSX had much better textures but low polygon counts and the N64 vis versa. The best way I can explain this is with the extreme example of FF7, which had beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds and then Cloud was made out of like 7 untextured polygons.

Conker's Bad Fur Day was the pinnacle of that generation graphically; pity it was made by Rare and hence subjected to the worst cheesy character design in the industry. What's the closest PSX game to it? FFIX?

In the end it was a choice between muddy graphics (N64), unstable jerky polygons (PSX), or both + no partial transparency (Saturn)

Nah, the N64 was just trying to be realistic graphically.
