Lots of stuff carries over. If I remember correctly, you play a song to open the first temple. Since you don't forget songs or lose masks after a restart, why not play the Song of Time before starting the dungeon? You can use that teleport song to get back quickly.
I get the feeling that people who dislike MM just aren't sure how it works. There isn't all that much busywork.
Some of the side quests are ridiculous, but that's about it.
So, yeah, I've been trying to get into this game for weeks and...I just can't. I've played and completed every Zelda game to date but I can't bring myself to chore through this one. I'm going to relocate my Wii to another television (I've been playing the first few hours on a 65" DLP) to see if that helps. The game looks like complete trash on my current setup.
Wait for the 3DS remake they hinted at if you want it to not be ugly.

I've finished the game and I'll second K3V's comment on liking it and it being fun. There's a few minor annoyances, like the reset of it telling you what items and shit are, but I can live with that. I've seen a few other people complain about Fi's hints, but you have to press down to read them, just ignore her. My only big complaint was how close the second and third imprisoned battles were. You do the second battle, go off do 1 thing, and then do another battle with him. Otherwise I didn't mind returning to areas, because you came back and went to new sections, or things were changed so they felt different. I did everything in the game except get the Hylian Shield, I still have that to do. I found the motion controls, worked really well, and I loved the upgrade system. I really hope those 2 things stick around in future Zelda titles. I really enjoyed the dungeon designs in this one. I played OoT 3D just before playing this and the dungeons in SS just flowed so much better.
I relocated my Wii from a 65" DLP to a 39" Plasma. Visually it's much, much more tolerable and, fortunately, I'm beginning to enjoy the game a little more.
