Erie County Health Commissioner Doctor Anthony Billittier said, "The violation was so egregious that it warranted an immediate closure order."
On that same day, the inspector also found that a refrigerator was too warm.

The restaurant has a history of cooling problems dating back to 2003.
In 2007, the store had a cockroach problem. The health department also documented dozens of sanitary issues in the last five years.

I saw 1000 year old tofu on Strange Foods one time. Andrew Zimmern couldn't even choke it down. It sits for months and ferments.

First of all, Deer? FUCK YEAH! BONUS! I eat deer whenever possible. It's better for you than anything else that restaurant (or most others of any kind) has ever served.

Secondly, me and Josh are from parallel universes. Same shit, different town. I used to work at a Popeye's Chicken in Boise when I was 16. It was such a joke. To get out of running deliveries I would tell customers there would be a two hour wait. And of course I snagged fries and and shit like that out of their order pretty much every time somebody had the wherewithal to actually accept the two hour wait. I'd get their food to 'em in like 20 minutes and they'd be all "Gosh! We thought it would be two hours. Nobody's even here yet!" I also wrecked my first truck with a full load of Popeye's and it exploded all over the cab. I wasn't hurt and could hardly stop laughing. This occurred on one of the few occasions I wasn't completely blasted off reefers.

Anyhow, on many many occasions we would walk in in the morning and there would be a funky smell. It was the nasty old rotten chicken in the walk-in. The first time we asked the boss about it and she was concerned enough to drive over. This chicken was grey and kind of swirly with faint iridescent colors like gasoline or oil in a mud puddle. It smelled exactly like rotting flesh. We were told that the fryers were 375 degrees and that would easily kill any bacteria and to serve that shit like normal. That first time my roommate ate some of it and ended up shitting himself inside out. We did that a hundred times in my four months on that job.

Also, the gravy making procedures there and at KFC are fucking gross. I'll gladly describe if anybody wants.

I'll share the secret of Wendy's Chili if you share the secret of KFC gravy...

And you can get away with eating 30% of and of the "good stuff" from ANY chinese order before anyone will notice. My favourite was raping the wontons from the soup and then filling the container with water.

Okay about the gravy now. I never worked at KFC, I was just telling the Popeye's gravy story and somebody who had recently worked at KFC said it was the same.

So the saga really begins with the chicken. I forget the exact order but I think it was like you take the raw chicken, roll it in flour, dip it in batter and then roll it flour again before being dumped in the fryer. So there's batter and flour. While it's being fried little bits of that stuff fall off and sink to the bottom. At the end of every night the fryer dude wheels this enormous aluminum filter cauldron thingy over to the fryers and filters the oil with it. At the bottom of this device is a paper filter like a flat coffee filter a little bigger around than a manhole cover. AFter filtering all three fryers there would be a layer of flour/batter sediment on that paper filter three inches thick. So that goes in the garbage right? WRONG! It is thrown into a big pot and buttermilk is added along with some shitass spice packet and some water. It is then stirred and stored until you eat that shit.

I never ate the gravy again after my first filter job.

At Wendy's the grill is heated in three sections The hot spot, for the shit you're quick cooking, the middle, where you have things cooking slowly, then the stepchild section where the burgers go if they've been sitting around more than a few minutes/dried out/broken/funky.

At the back of the stepchild section is a tin filled with grease and grill scrapings. You put the burgers that don't sell in here. The burned up, fucked up hockey pucks. At the end of the night you have a thick gray meat sludge that has been sitting out all day. You stab it with the spatula for about 20 minutes and dump it into a large pot. Something even more sinister happens overnight, and the next day you have chili.

Eat up.

Sounds legal to me so it must be good for you.

The funny thing in all of this is I guarantee you that there are people in the world being all grossed out by what they're reading about that Chinese restaurant above and salivating over Wendy's chili AT THE SAME TIME.

I'm not squeamish about any of this. If it tastes delicious, doesn't have something obviously tainted in it that I can see (like a big ass cockroach), and doesn't get me sick, I don't give a shit. Actually, not even that applies. I got food poisoning from Sonic, and had around 10 hours of wishing I were dead from that. I will eat there again. It's delicious.

The only thing I can really think of bad about where I work now is the quality of the fish. If it doesn't sell, it stays in the cooler, until it's squishy and red and disgusting (it's always disgusting, but I digress). We've had several people complain that the fish was bad/rotten/whatever and I've only see them throw out bad fish once. Ussually if someone complains, we just go make them another one from the same tub and cook it longer. lol fish frys.

When I used to work at Pizza Hut, this one lady would call every week, place an order, call back five minutes later, cancel the order, call back 10 minutes later, order something different. One day the cook got quite upset by this and decided to cook her pizza with that liquid whatever that makes you shit furiously (can't think of the name). I had to deliver it to her, and it was some crazy old lady who's apartment smelled like dead cats. FUN!

In response to how the gravy is made, that is what gravy fucking is. Leftover fried crap. It is pretty gross that they use the stuff that has been frying all day, so more than likely burnt to a crisp, but besides that it is no different than the gravy you get from a non-fast food chicken place.

Also, General Tso's Venison sounds like the shit.

Also, pro-tip, these are my qualification for eating at a chinese restaurant.
1. Must be busy
2. Must be able to see into the kitchen
3. Clean bathroom

Now, those are not guarentees of quality, but they certainly help your chances.

I have noticed that at Chinese food places, the texture/color of the meat never fully resembles the same type of meat anywhere else. Like, the pork is always a little too dark to be pork. But it is tasty and I am alive, so it can't be too bad.

I really like the descriptions in the kitchens in Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London. Fast Food Nation was pretty bad too; I didn't eat McDonald's for like a year after reading it back in high school. Now? Who cares, I'll eat any fast food. Burger King is pretty gross, though.

I've worked at pizza hut for two summers (and hey! will probably work there again starting this week) and I never saw anything go down there either.

You ever go into a supermarket and see those plastic containers filled with various pre-cut fruit? That's all old fruit that didn't sell and/or was dropped/damaged.

In delis, various salads (tuna, chicken, etc.) are "freshened up" daily by adding more and more mayo to them. You can stretch that shit out for at least a week or more doing that.

If you buy a premade salad/sandwich at a Deli you deserve an ulcer, yuck.

Pre-made salads and sandwiches were huuuuuuge in England. They were also delicious and not at least made that morning, so fuck it.

At least in my store, this isn't really true. If I'm cutting up say, a cantaloupe, I'll take the one that's most likely to not sell because it has a spot on it or something. Ugly stuff we sometimes mark down. But if it's bad, it gets thrown away. At a grocery store, you really don't want to piss your customers off, because the regulars spend thousands of dollars at the store each year.

Yeah, this is way true. With a lot of fruit there's a thin line between the perfect ripeness and spoiled, so obviously if you're packaging fruit to be eaten the day of, you're going to pick the stuff that would probably be thrown out within the next day or two.

So really everyone wins. You get the sweetest fruit and the produce department doesn't lose product.

true. I worked in a deli and a seafood department. The salads were turned around once daily for about a week until they were finally changed... every now and then I see some in the display case that weren't flipped and they look all crusty and shit. When somebody I knew would come by for something in the case I would always scoop it from the container in the fridge for them. Also, when fish had a day left before it should have been thrown out they would tell us to re-label the package to extend it by another day (I would most always tell this to the customer who was ready to purchase it, unless they were an asshole).

Well the following is good news for me:

I don't eat Chinese food unless made by friend or family

I don't eat KFC or Popeye's type chicken.

Bad news:

I have enjoyed Wendy's chili in the past, barf.

After working in several restaurants I have seen the darker side of things and I am well aware that I have eaten undesirable things when dining out. The idea of eating roadkill or domesticated animals can fuck right off, which is why I don't eat restaurant Chinese food.

Also, I worked at a travel plaza that had both a burger king and a popeyes in high school. My place of hire was BK but on one fine morning when i went into work hung over they sent me to work at popeyes to cut the fat off raw chicken. After about ten minutes I threw up in the kitchen and went home.

I started my illustrious career at a Burger King.
The worst I saw was chicken products being held in the..chicken product holder unit for hours on end (they were supposed to be tossed after 20 minutes or so) and given a quick dunk in the fryer when something was finally ordered. We'd also do the same thing with fries that had been held past their time.
That was a sure work around for assholes who asked for fries with no salt. Most people would ask for them like that to ensure getting fresh fries. We'd just take the old ones and dunk them in the fryer for a few seconds. Most of the salt would cook off.
Also, to quicken up the closing of the store, we'd break down the steamer about an hour before we were supposed to and just keep burgers sitting in it. A few extra seconds in the microwave would heat them right back up.

Shit, I need to ask for fries with no salt next time.

I think every Wednesday, this truck comes to pick up the giant garbage can full of meat trimmings that have accumulated over the week. I was talking to the driver today, and asked him what all he picks up. He said lots of trimmings, and any dead animals from farms (Ocala, a town nearby, has a lot of horses. He says a little over a hundred die each week).

What happens to this wonderful meat mixture? It gets thrown into the back of an open dump truck of sorts, and is taken to Tampa where it's all thrown in a giant vat of water. Everything is cooked down (I presume the cut the horses into smaller pieces) and the fat is skimmed off the top. He said this is sold to soap and cosmetic companies. The meat and remaining fat is separated from the bones, and it's expressed and dried for feed and dog food/bones. Finally, the bones are ground up, mostly for fertilizer.

While the whole thing seems pretty gross, I think it's good that at least it's all recycled in some way. If Fido likes it then no big deal right?
