"John Smoltz has pitched his entire major league career with the Atlanta Braves, but he is on the verge of a deal with the Boston Red Sox, according to sources."
whoop whoop! I hope he still has the gas. I love Smoltz.

Another good Sox signing.
"The Boston Red Sox were close to signing free-agent outfielder Rocco Baldelli on Wednesday night. It is expected to be announced at the Boston Baseball Writers Dinner, where Baldelli will be honored."
this is why the sox win championships and the mets don't. not a single word connecting the mets to those two guys, who could have filled pressing needs.
What are the chances that Drew + Baldelli = 162 games? I would guess not very high
Why aren't the Mets signing Manny?
Smoltz & Baldelli are officially in Boston, and Hoffman is officially in Milwaukee.
All three are high-risk, high-reward signings imo. I'm far from a Boston fan, but I'll be pulling for Baldelli (and Jason Bay) to stay healthy and produce this season.
Mets ownership (ie: Fred Wilpon) does not want Manny on the team. Omar Minaya has made it known to just about the entire world that he loves Manny Ramirez and if given the authorization would sign him. The Wilpons do not want to pay him or deal with his drama so Manny will not be a member of the NY Mets. They also don't want someone who will increase ratings, merchandise sales, seats sold, pay for himself in a year, take all the backpages from the Yanks, take away pressure from Wright, Reyes and Beltran..etc. He'll be a Dodger or something...maybe even a Yankee but not a met. LETS GO FERNANDO TATIS!
I really like the Red Sox signing Smoltzy.
