Blockey
Best $1 I've spent in a while. Fun as hell! It's like an updated NES Ice Hockey.

Best $1 I've spent in a while. Fun as hell! It's like an updated NES Ice Hockey.
Since when does updated mean "looks and plays worse than"?
Can you imagine jyoung with an iPhone?
Actually, I tried all 80 of the XBLA indie sports games over the weekend, and Blockey and Hurdle Turtle were the only two I liked. Most of 'em are just shitty Avatar games.
Hurdle Turtle is awesome, but it gives me a headache. It's like a full game of the Battletoads' Turbo Tunnel:
Fun game, but when it kicks up the speed up to Turbo, I can't take me no more Turtle. Just too much speed for my head to handle.
That looks awful.
bububut it's a labor of love man
Dude, it has Turtles with Moustaches.
Moustaches!
But yeah, it's like a full game of the Battletoads' Turbo Tunnel level with killer 8-bit music.
Sadly, I just don't think the human brain was designed to withstand that sort of mental mindtrip.
Shut up.
Mad trash, IMO. There are great throwback games, this is not one of them.
I take it back, I managed to find one more good game in the sports section:
FITBA -- 240 points
NO STICKY BALL
CHALLENGE YOUR MATES
Seriously, the ball physics are real loose and awesome. And the twin stick gameplay feels great.
"Sensible Soccer For Assholes"
Nah, I tried the XBLA version of Sensible Soccer and it's no fun.
FITBA's a lot better, and it's only 240 points compared to Sensible Soccer's 800 points.
Plus I can use the custom team feature to make my team a bunch of racists in purple/pink striped uniforms.

The nice thing about indie games is that the trial downloads go quick and you can tell whether or not the games are worth buying after like 30 seconds of playing.
Most of these look like they could turn out pretty decent. The strategy games aren't really my style, though.
San Bruno isn't bad. Especially for a dollar.
Looks like garbage. Shocker.
It's like Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighter for the NES: painfully simple. I really liked that game as a younger lad!
All I'm saying is that you could do worse for a dollar, GruMpyPant-zo!
That dragon game looks exactly like NES Dragon Spirit.
On one of the other sites I write for I do a weekly column covering most of the XBLIG releases, occasionally bringing up some subjects I deem important.
If you absolutely have to read something then hey whatever. Go crazy.

All y'all better be playing WizOrb!
Waiting for the Steam version.
Yeah, Wizorb is pretty rad.
Wizorb is SO GOOD. Loving it. He'd better be making another game.
Bought it, playing ASAP.
Also, in case people don't know Paul Robertson did character animation on Wizorb.
It's fun! Just started but it might be the best 'paddle ball bricks' game ever.
Grabbed the demo, checking it out now.
Seems like the kind of game that would be better with a mouse.
Pingvinas is a badass board game!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkLe-O6gx4A
Penguins eating the fuck out of fish and trapping each other on a lone ice block to drown/die of starvation.
And it has 4-player online play! Only 240 points!
There's a pretty fun Outrun clone that just hit the Indie section called Ocean Drive Challenge. It's only 80pts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aakort5bb8o
Has anyone else tried DLC Quest? For 80 points, it's pretty clever.
It's sort of a Wonder Boy-esque satire of how out of control DLC can get. For example, right at the start you have to buy the ability to go left.
A bunch of indie games got discounted recently to 80 points.
I know Cthulu Saves the World is one of them.
I was bummed to see Pingvinas missing from the list. Still waiting for it to hit 80 points.
So Soulcaster and Soulcaster II both dropped to 80 points. I recommend both!

Unfortunately, Escape Goat (from the same Soulcaster developer) is still 240 points. A price drop is coming as soon as Microsoft allows it (sometime in February).

Why don't you just spend the two extra dollars on it if you want it.
$3-$1. That's two cans of carb-ridden AriZona iced teas you'd have to give up!
DLC Quest and Ocean Drive Challenge are great dollar buys - Little Racers Street is also a good one for lovers of RC De Go!/RC Pro Am, although since it's weapon-less, it's really more like the former than the latter. Motor Heat's also awesome - looks great for an Indie game and has a great sense of speed.
Escape Goat is down to 80 points today!

Buy or die!
I just finished DLC Quest. It was about 15 minutes long but I already got the joke about 5 minutes in. Still, not a bad use of one dollar.
Has anyone played MegaUp: Upload if you can! It sounds topical.
The guy who made Escape Goat (it was just one guy) got his start in the game industry working on soundtracks. He quit his sound design job so he could start making his own full games.
Might be time to pick up both Soulcasters while I'm at it.
I'm a bit iffy on recommending this, but what the hell-
Space Fighter 4000-
It's by one of Star Fighter (3DO)'s original programmers. Yeah, it's more than a bit basic at the moment, but for one guy on nights and weekends it's pretty decent. Also, there are plans for plenty of updates. I really want a proper Star Fighter sequel so people should buy this to encourage putting some meat on this game's skeleton.
James
Needs more DEATH BY STEREO.
DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEATH! WOO HOO HOO!
JAMES!
Soulcaster I & II are on PC now with some bonus features:
Quote:
The wait is over… you can get these titles right now as part of the Indie Royale bundle!
Already played them on Xbox? Well I’ve added a few extras to sweeten the deal:
Three control schemes: Original 360 controller, keyboard only (fully remappable!), or click-to-move with keyboard and mouse
New challenge rooms: 18 all new levels (8 for Soulcaster, 10 for Soulcaster II) which unlock after beating the campaign. Think of them as time trials with unique combinations of summons. It even saves your best times for each room!
Unlockable campaign modes: Hard Mode not difficult enough for you? Try going without one of the summons. Still not had enough? Try beating the game with just the archer! Your best total time for each campaign mode is also saved.
Autosaving. No more writing down passwords (though I’m gonna miss this). It is 2012 after all.
Option to run in windowed mode or full-screen, stretched to fit or pixel-perfect.
I didn't know about Space Fighter 4000 or Escape Goat. Going to pick both of them up.
Pingvinas has finally dropped to 80 MSP! Time to eat fishes and kill penguins Titanic style!
Blocks That Matter is also down to 80 MSP. But I haven't been able to try it since the game crashes when I try to load it.
Edit: I picked up the full version of Blocks That Matter and it runs fine. Charming puzzle game!
Pingvinas is fun. I used to play the board game (Hey, That's MY Fish) pretty often.
So that Penny Arcade RPG is out today for 400 points.
http://download.xbox.com/content/xna...ld/screen3.jpg
I didn't realize it would be the same price as the Steam version.
I think PA3 is pretty good, and I really like the unique battle system (life is refilled after each fight, at the beginning of each fight everyone has 0mp, you gain 1mp at the beginning of each turn and at each turn the enemies become 10% stronger) but I wish it would've been about 33% longer.
It was worth the 5 bucks, but I think I liked the old games a little bit more.
I got Sequence and Escape Goat today. Sequence wants me to spam my XBL friends list to make it easier to get items. Feels very Facebook of them.
<3 Escape Goat
Penny Arcade 3 is on sale for 240 points.
Solid RPG from the makers of Breath of Death and Cthulhu Saves The World.

Looking good!
I love that you're all over this garbage.
So the customizer for Action Arcade Wrestling 2 is awesome. The gameplay, not so much:

Disappointing, but I guess you get what you pay for at only $3.
