I've had 2 ipods die on me 2 - 3 months after their warranties were up with apple going ohhh well we can replace it for 75% of what you paid for it. Fuck this I'm done with Ipods. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative mp3 players that aren't complete shit?
I've had this Creative Zen since it first came out, and I'm finding it to be pretty good:

It has a decent size screen, great picture and video quality, and sounds just as good as anything else out there. It also doesn't DRM anything you put on it, so you're free to copy-and-paste off of it. The biggest version is 32 GB, though. If that's enough memory for you, it's a good choice.
I want something that can play FLAC. Too lazy to google.
kingoffighters: my quick google search turned up either the Zune or a 5.5 generation Ipod with rockbox installed
I'm gonna have to give the Zen a look then. I'm fine with something in the 8 - 12 gig range. I know you said you've had the Zen since it first came out but when was that? Has it been like 2 - 3 years?
I just want something that will play MP3s and not fucking die on me in 15 months.

I've had a Zen Xtra 30 gig for years now, and it's been great. The battery doesn't last as long as it used to, but it still works and can be replaced cheap. In my experience Creative is a mixed bag, they have awesome engineers and crappy software designers and tech support. That being said, if I were buying a new MP3 player another Zen would be the first thing I would look at.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I'm going to go with the Zen, just the straight up Zen, as the 8 gig looks to be only about 130 bucks. Plus it has an SD card slot to increase the memory if you want. What program do you guys use with it? I take it there's no chance in hell it actually talks to itunes is there?
Anybody know if a Zen can interface with a car head unit via usb?

No albums since it's not a traditional MP3 player, although I think they set aside some space or MP3's if you want to load them.
I've had this 40 gb Zen Touch player for at least 4 years and it still works like a fucking champ. IF it ever dies, I will be looking at Creative Labs mp3 players first.
The Zen looks very cool. Quick question though, I was reading the Wiki for it and it says that you can't play stuff off the SD cards. Truth?
From what I've read, you can play anything from the SD cards, they just don't show up in the main library and are accessed through a menu.
Newegg has a sale on the 32gig Xfi Zen starting today until Sunday.

It varies depending on the head unit, but the general rule is that if you can plug a MP3 player up to a computer and use it like an external hard drive without loading drivers, then it should work. My Zen doesn't work without Creative's software installed, but most of the newer models do. I just bought a Kenwood head unit, and I'm going to grab a 16 gig USB drive for the music. Or do you mean that you have some kind of noise in the head unit itself? I haven't had any audio issues with mine using a flash drive, other than the audio loss from MP3 compression.
I have a 512 mb mp3 player that I got 2 christmases ago (was told it cost $30 at the time) and it holds about 30 songs and works like a charm to this day. Only maintenence ever done on it was changing the AAA batteries. If you need more than 30 different songs during a day where you work you may in fact be doing it wrong.
My drive is hard and firm. It works beautifully. HARRR.

Are older black and white screen iPods still worth a shit? I like the look of 'em.
My second gen one still works great. Only thing that went wrong was the battery life got shorter, and I installed a new one pretty easily. It weighs a ton and it's about the size of a deck of cards, but other than that it's good!

Yeah Ipods can be a little inconsistent. My old silver Ipod mini didn't even last a year before it started fucking up and freezing but my ole' 32 gb ipod classic (3rd gen maybe?) has been dropped countless times and used all the time and it still works perfect. I'm planning on buying a new ipod soon so when this one breaks my music wont disapear.
I bought my Zen refurbished as new for real cheap.
I just picked up a Zune 120 gb mp3 player. Outside of battery life, which I haven't gotten the chance to test out yet, it's great. Amazon had it for $229 which is $20 less than everyone else is selling it for. I haven't broken 3 gb yet after wirelessly downloading a ton of pictures and videos.
