I did a search to see if anyone's noticed this comic before and found a brief mention in another area of the site. Does anyone else read Kate Beaton's stuff? There's some seriously funny content to be found here.

It's funny this came up, I went over her site a couple days ago.
They're not all winners, but I think almost all of her historical stuff is gold (nobility-related gags in particular). Her speaking with her ten-year-old self can be funny too, if a little C&H'ish at times. She actually draws amazingly great facial expressions, considering her simple "pen on some random piece of paper" style.
It probably helps that I have a Scottish, Anthropology-majoring girlfriend with self-deprecating humor and there's a lot of crossover.
I'm not convinced this is any good.
I'm also not convinced that it's particularly bad either.

Some of the comics are funny. The key to the funny is taking serious topics and giving them slightly clever but nonsensical punchlines. My comment was reflecting more on how subtle the differences in humor are...I assume it's why so much of what's out there targets the lowest common denominator.

I can't stand the art in Achewood. His mix of rigid fonts, reliance on (at times aliased) boxes, copy/paste frames, and crude, crude macpaint drawings just make it unbearable. All the characters' faces look like some sort of rare genital condition, the compositions are set in the most retard-simple way possible, and Onstad clearly just hates anyone that can see.
Unfortunately, going through it there's seemingly some funny to be found, especially if you kept up with it, but the art does it a huge disservice.
Achewood gets by for being the smartest comic strip in the world. The characters are about as complex and well-developed as you can get.
The art's terrible, but it has it's own unique subtlty to it. It would not be as good of a strip with better art, somehow.
Also, it is right about Star Wars.
I don't like this comic, and I like silly history based humor.

edt: Of course, the left to right scrolling is a requirement of the movement of that particular strip. Everybody's constantly running around! Still, I feel like Washed Away would do alright with that kind of arrangement.
I like the idea of the panel popping up from the bottom, but i don't think it quiiiite works, as it's subjective based on the size of the reader's monitor. I'd almost prefer a click-through setup over scrolling down, just because I'm not huge on vertical reading arrangements. Your eye gets drawn off the panel you're looking at to the tip-top of the next one where there's not really any visuals going on.

You kind of end up shooting down to see what's next, and it takes away from the panel you're looking at, IMO. This is less of a problem in a side-to-side arrangement.
HOWEVER, the art and storytelling are fantastic, sir.

I always pictured it in my mind as being a little square book with thick pages and each page has it's own panel on it.
Possibly setting on someones coffee table.
Perhaps being read by a distinguished looking man in a smoking jacket in a lavish library.

Scary Go Round has been this crazy artistic journey since it started some 10 years ago. Go look at the first "Bobbins" strips by the same artist and your eyes may throw up. That's the progress you get drawing every single day. Love it.
