EE is edge enhancement, it usually ends up creating an almost halo or glow effect around edges, which the 35mm shots on TDK are now riddled with. DNR is digital noise reduction, which tries to take the grain out of films but usually ends up just taking out the detail that makes HD films looks so good, thus killing the sharpness and softening the film. Digital Noise is adding in random pixels of different colors to try and simulate the effects of grain. Add in some of this stuff to Nolan's typical soft focus style and you end up with a somewhat mushy image.

If you want to see some of this for yourself then head over to AVS forums to this thread.
He's come some good examples of the EE, and DNR going on. It would seem all the Imax scenes look much better than the 35mm scenes, which seem to have EE and DNR out the ass, plus to me the 35mm scenes look like they suffer from a much lower bit rate than the Imax ones.

It sucks, I'm still torn over if I'm going to buy it or not. While I really like TDK, and I want to see the bonus features, the transfer and handling of the image of such a High profile flick is pretty shitty, and there's ways of watching the movie with out having to buy it and support WB's actions with this.

Your analog is retarded and is in no way similar. A movie on BD is advertised as perfect picture and sound. Look at something like WallE on BD that is pixel for pixel what Pixar put onto film. Then look at TDK and see how much processing was done to it for the disc release. The Wii was not advertised as an HD system with perfect picture and sound, so your analogy fails, as it usually does because you only see things in this black and white world of yours. This is more akin to a 360 game only using a 256k res texture for a characters entire body.

I hear the PC version of Dark Knight is the best.

Why do they continue to do so much post-processing that harms the picture? I know there are some movies that benefit from post-processing, but don't they actually look at the outcome and say, "Shit, this looks like ass. Maybe we shouldn't do this or maybe try something."?

Don't worry -- 'The Dark Knight' does not disappoint. Presented theatrically in both standard 35mm and IMAX formats, 'The Dark Knight' is framed here in alternating aspect ratios. The majority of the film is 2.40:1, while the IMAX-filmed segments open up to 1.78:1. Personally, I found the flip-flopping at times slightly distracting. While the jump between compositions isn't that jarring when it comes after long scenes (such as the opening, which is 1.78:1), there are times when a single shot will be presented in its own aspect ratio (such as the beginning of the "love boat" sequence), and that can irritate. The upside is that the IMAX material does display a noticeable uptick in clarity and resolution. The 35mm-based footage is certainly no slouch, but there is an added sharpness and depth to the IMAX-originated footage that raises the bar for what Blu-ray is capable of.

That said, the whole of the transfer is excellent. The source is absolutely spotless, with no defects and a smooth, clean veneer. Blacks are quite simply the richest I think I've seen on a Blu-ray, and contrast is never too hot or too flat. The image pops with wonderful depth -- it is never less than three-dimensional -- yet remains natural and appealing. Color saturation is likewise rich, with splashes of deep primaries and not a hint of chroma noise, bleeding or smearing. Fleshtones are also accurate, except in situations of intentional stylization. Shadow delineation is also exemplary, with even the darkest areas brimming with fine textures and detail.

Unfortunately, my caveat is that there is edge enhancement that results in visible edge halos. While the encode is otherwise rock solid -- I found no artifacts, such as aliasing or pixelization -- the edge enhancement, if slight, is clearly visible in longer shots (such as the parade sequence). It is the only element of this presentation that deserves any knocks, though hardly a fatal flaw. In all other respects, 'The Dark Knight' is a stunner.

Since so much of the film has dark, dimly lit scenes, the inky blacks contribute greatly to the depth and weight of the picture.

So how does the resolution of the 2.4:1 content compare to the 1.78:1 picture quality? Believe it or not, the detail remains nearly consistent in both aspect ratios--there's just more presence in the scenes shot using the IMAX cameras. Non-IMAX sequences give up surprisingly little in definition. Perhaps the most extraordinary scene to view the differences is when Batman raids the high rise building in Hong Kong to extract Lau (Chin Han). In the full IMAX resolution, with much of the screen enveloped in deep black, Batman is shown perched above the city. He then descends through the air, breaking through the window nearby the desk where Lau is working and quickly dispatches Lau's body guards. Finally, as he holds Lau near the broken windows, both men are whisked out of the building by a floating device and a passing aircraft. The complicated, busy action coupled with poor lighting would be problematic if not for the detail delivered both by the 1.78:1 and 2.4:1 shots that make up the scene. While the IMAX picture is preferable because of a greater sense of depth and resolution, the 2.4:1 content shares its small, gentle grain and otherwise clean, highly detailed presentation. Some element of the grain has a digital sheen to it, but I cannot justify deducting a point or half-point for that.

Hardly a frame of The Dark Knight seems less than perfectly shot, framed and produced for 1080p. While videophiles can always nitpick, it's important to put the picture quality in perspective by taking a look at Batman Begins. That BD lacked the vibrancy and detail that, thankfully, are on display throughout The Dark Knight. The comparison with the earlier film is no contest. Watch the IMAX aerial shot looking down on Wayne's yacht. The extraordinary depth makes it appear that you could take off into the picture on a hang glider and float down to the water. The enticing video quality has a similar effect in the prologue, when two of the Joker's henchman rappel from one building to another. The picture appears rich and deep, giving the illusion that one could step into the screen and rappel with them. Though these examples feature the extraordinary IMAX sequences, the 2.4:1 sequences often have this effect as well. Above all, the tremendous definition and delineation within dark areas of the screen push the picture of The Dark Knight all the way to reference quality.

If you go to this thread and look at the images there of the BD of TDK you can see the shittyness of the picture. This one stands out the most to me as you can see the added noise in the white shirt that fills the bottom left of the screen. And you can see the EE halo around the one cop.

It's just disappointing that they screwed with the image as much as they did. A few years back I might have said fuck it and bought it anyway, but I know that in a couple years they're gonna release another edition of it with a better transfer so why drop money on it now.

If you guys can't see either of that then you have shitty eyes.

First of all, I do visit AVS but fuck those guys. That's the same board filled with guys of wanna be calibrators because they either don't want to shell out the $ for a professional job or they can't because they spent up all their allowance on that 60" Elite (I realize there are calibrators who post on that board). That's the same board that has a BRD like Hellboy jump all the way from the silver PQ tier to the upper gold PQ tier back-and-forth for months until they realize that BRD has a damn fine PQ. Those guys can't tell their elbows from their assholes half the time but because they use a fucking break in DVD for 100-200 hours on their new Pio Plasma and think they can calibrate remotely close to NTSC standards by using their own fucking eye (no need for a Sencor when I gots me eyes!), they can spit out the best coffee Mulholland Drive style.

It would also help to know what display this guy is taking those screen caps from, and if he has a ISRF calibrated set. He very well may, but I don't know.

Secondly, the first review mentioned the EE, halos, etc., acknowledges the flaws, yet still says it is a damn fine PQ.

EDIT - and if we're talking about being a OG videophile, well, if you don't have an ISRF calibrated set in the first place, you're watching shit.

There really are just a bunch of stupid fucks who think that just because they bought the most expensive of something its the best and waste money on shit that's absolutely retarded. I'm not going to argue with you there one bit. I will say though that I find it doubtful, that a blu-ray.com reviewer is going to say that the biggest BD coming out this year has bad enough PQ to pass on the disc. It could look like dog shit smeared across the screen and I'd feel they'd probably still say it was no big deal and looked great.

Well he's not taking the screen caps with a physical camera pointed at the set, these are screen grabs done digitally from the source materal. So his set isn't adding or taking away anything from it. He's done a lot of threads like this. He's one of the screen shots from his Wall E thread. While there is grain in the image, you don't get the noise that is all over the Dark Knight in the 35mm scenes. (I'll give you generally the imax scenes look pretty damn good)

That's fine that he's ok with it, though it doesn't surprise me that he would be. Personally I'm not, cause I know they can do better. When I saw it in the theater it wasn't full of some much digital noise, which personally is what bothers me the most. I know companies love to double dip, so why buy a lesser quality product, when I know they can and at some point will do better. *shrug* Specially considering they charge such a premium for BDs, I don't see the point in buying it unless it has really good picture quality.

Someone bought it from Best Buy with bluetooth headset. They had it for the weekend and didnt like it. Sold it to me for $385. I'm just shy of my 1 year mark so i wasnt going to sign up for a new contract with Verizon just to get it for $199.99.

Unlocked the phone already to work on GSM if and when I go overseas. Plus resell value just went up when I plan to unload it. Just waiting for new OS update. I'll be picking up my usual accessories as well..screen protector, car charger and instead of case, found about about a new company called Seidio (www.seidioonline.com). Going to get their holster and rubber case.

Also, those who have Verizon, I was under the Family Select plan with 700 mins and unlimited txt message. Since I got the BB, I needed to get the internet for $30. Which would of costed me $130. But me and the gf barely use the 700 mins (average about 200), so I downgraded from 700 to 550 mins for $50 (plus $9.99 for second line). I added the unlimited txt with in Verizon network and includes 500 out of network txt for $10 per line ($20). So instead of my plan being $130, its $110.
