NEW or USED and why?

Something that I have a habbit of doing when it comes to games, I prefer new games when I can but only because I know for certain that it is in mint condition (minus cracked cases sometimes)... but then I look at some of the auctions on eBay and wonder what they buy them for the game or the fact that it is sealed :confused:

For example the factory sealed (although could have been rewrapped) Zelda Super Nintendo game that just sold for $300 on eBay, aparrently that game will never be opened... what is your take on this and do you do this with some games where they are sealed never to be opened/played?

Also how is one to tell if a mint game was rewrapped, I have had some experience with shrink wrapping and I could duplicate the seams on a Super Nintendo package with little effort if I wanted to (not something I would do)... so if the game is never opened how would they know?

Well, I pretty much dont care if its new or used. The price it the factor here. If I see the game used, but in great condition but for $10 less than new, I will get it(Got my FFX this way a 2 weeks ago :)).

I dont care if the box/case has scratches or other things like that. If the game disk is fine, I'm all set. Its all about games for me anyway.

Plus, If I save money buying used over new, I can use saved money to buy more games :)

Ebay is my best friend, when I looking for good deals :)

I voted that I "buy used games but in mint and complete condition", but I have no problem buying new games (I do open them). I really don't have many unopened games, if I do, I just haven't got around to playing them... :)

So for me it would be either 2 or 3 for me, and 4 with very few games. I'd rather play the games :D

New only cause I'm super obsessive but then again If it's not an option to buy new I'll buy it used and complete after a inspection by my eyes,fingers.

As for rewrapping well I do have some concerns but don't some older PSX games have that elastic wrap without the folded corners such as Squaresoft and Spaz/Working Designs games? If not well I paid full price for rewrapped games.

Well, most older games are very difficult and expensive to obtain brand new. Hence, used is the only viable way to get to play these games (don't even tell me about emulation).

I have started to buy used recent games as well, mainly to cut costs. However, if it is a 'niche' game, I will tend to buy new so as to help increase said game's sales #'s (more sales= more niche games). For instance, I bought the domestic PS2 GGX (why no Justice, why? :mad: ) even though I had it for DC and there was a used copy for $10 less- just to send a message to publishers.

The big drawback to used: some people treat their games (and assumingly their other possessions) so poorly, its pathetic. I have had to return a few used games over the years due to irrepirable scratching.

I just returned a used copy of MK Trilogy because it was perviously owned by Freddy Kruger!

I buy new when ever I can too, price is definately a factor and if a new game is way too much more then a used one I can get in mint condition I will go for the used one. I do have a few unopened games, mostly because I haven't got to them or I don't have anyway to play them or a few that are doubles that I got cheap. I have some unopened games for collecting but most of mine are opened so I can play them :)

I will only buy used if it's in near mint condition with everything included.

If it's a publisher that I really want to support, I'll buy the new game even if it's a couple bucks more expensive.

I only buy used if it's in mint condition, and only if I cannot get it new.

I don't have a problem with used cartriges, they're virtually indestructable. But CDs and DVDs are different.

i always try to buy games new. however, if a game is used but in emaculate condition, i'll buy it. also, if a game is a good price, i'll buy it used or new. rare games that i can't find new, i'll also buy used.

Ironically, I used to insist on new/mint games back when I had relatively less disposable income. Now, even though I can generally afford pretty much whatever games I want, I find that I'm far less particular. Hence, beginning with Dreamcast, I have had no problem with snagging the occasional used game. This usually happens when it's a game that I wasn't dying to purchase upon release.

I guess I used to be more "collector-ish" about games. Now, I'm satisfied with just playing a decent game, and used ones accomplish that goal.

Developers don't see a profit on those used sales, so unless you care deeply for EB's financial stability, you might as well go the pirate route. Buy your games new, it'll cost a few extra bucks, but at least you'll be sending money to the developer. If it can't be had new, buy used for the junk, or pirate away. Plus think of it this way, the money you save pirating instead of buying used, can be put towards new games.

Ugh... I'm generally particular about things like missing booklets and all, but not when it comes to old games. Newer games (CDs, DVDs, etc.) come in cases, where the booklet can be easily stored. For those, I need the instructions and the back insert. For older cart games, I'll take just the cart if its stickers are in good condition. I'd love to have all the boxes/inserts/etc. when it comes to old games, but the truth of the matter is that I don't have enough space to store all that crap, and the game's the important thing anyway. The only exceptions are my import games, like Sin and Punishment, Bangaioh, X-men vs SF, Cyberbots, etc. for which I've kept the cardboard boxes and all inserts.

People that pirate excessively are jerks. If more than 50% of your PSX games are burns, you're a jerk. Stealing is stealing, and I'm not gonna stand here on my soapbox and say I've never stolen a thing in my life, because I have, but any action I might have taken part in cannot change the fact that stealing is wrong.

Buying used games is legal and burning games is not. Your right to buy and sell games on the secondhand market is protected by copyright law. Resale value is factored into the retail cost of games, and many consumers buy games with the knowledge that they can sell them when they are done.

On "living" systems I buy new to support the publisher most of the time. If it's a publisher I don't give a dang about and a game I'm only currious about I buy it used. That's rare tho'. I am a compleation nut, so I always look for complete used games. I won't let a missing book stop me from playing if that's all that is available, however.

For "dead" systems, new is way too expensive, and it is only supporting the collector you bought it from anyway. There are some exceptions. I got Lords of Thunder new from TZD because of the reasonable price.

the only time i buy a game used is when i cant find it anywhere new any more and only if its in good condition

sometimes i make sacrifices like i bought a Marvel Super Heroes (for saturn) with no book but a case and the disc was in fine condition for 3 bucks


i personally prefer new especially when it comes to games that are just coming out

liek is aid if i cant find the game new anywhere any more then ill buy it used otherwise ill go out of my way to find a new copy

Personally, if I think a game is worth buying, it's worth buying new if possible to support the companies that made and published it. I'd never waste money buying new games that are out of print. If I can't buy it new at a store, then used is fine with me (but then again so is pirating, although I'd prefer to own the original as long as it isn't ridiculously expensive).

When it comes to CD games, I don't like to buy a game unless it is factory sealed and untouched. Call me anal, but I don't like anyone else to touch MY game before me, you know.

When it comes to cart games, I have no problem buying used ones. Just as long as they are in good condition, that is.....

For me, the issue is how much I think I'll be playing the game.

If I think I'll play a game a lot, I'll always buy it new. On very rare occasions (like, say, Soul Calibur) I buy one copy used and one new for backup later on.

As far as used is concerned, if I'm buying on a whim, I'll look for used first. I will only buy new if the game is complete and the disc in mint condition (I don't mind a less-than-mint manual, and scuffed cases can be replaced easily). I don't have a problem with the developers not making money on used games, because the stores that sell used also take trade-ins, and I trade stuff in on occasion. It's nice to have that option, so I look at it as a status quo. Plus the people at my local Funco are super cool and know their stuff, so I don't mind giving my support.

I'd say 10% of my collection is used, 90% new.

I do not understand why people buy games new and never unwrap and play them. The collector mentality is a baffling mystery to me. IMO, games are meant to be played, not collected. That's materialistic hoarding, in my book.

I go out of my way to purchase new wherever possible. The only sealed game I own is Lunar for the Sega CD, which I will open one day. (My Sega CD is kinda rough with CDs at the moment, and I already beat Lunar years ago.)

As for piracy, I believe I schooled Johnny on this back at GameGO. There is no way you can seriously argue that the market for used games is as parasitic and harmful as the market for bootlegs. Maybe I will unleash a feature on all your pirate hides.

Ignoring all this piracy talk :mad: , I do my best to buy new only. However, sometimes I must settle for used. I will not buy incomplete games though and I am very obsessed with condition. It is unthinkable what some people do to their games. As for keeping them sealed, I do not do that. I buy all my games to play them. They are open the moment they reach my hands. Why must I buy new then? Because I like my stuff to be in perfect condition.

If you all feel some sort of need to act as some sort of charity for underpriviliged developers, that's fine, but please don't act like you hold some sort of logical or moral high ground. :)

I always by new... well, I always try to. The main reason being to support the developers, like other people here have mentioned. So, if there is a choice then I will almost always go with the new, even if it costs more.

The only exceptions are:

a) The game is really hard to find and used is the only realistic option.

b) The savings are really significant.

Piracy != Company loses potential profits.

Piracy == Having something you're not supposed to have.

It's so simple. Buyer A buys Game-X. Buyer A then sells Game-X to Buyer B. Buyer B now owns the game. Buyer A does not. 1 copy of the game circulates.

Buyer A buys Game-X. Buyer A then burns a copy of Game-X for Buyer B. Buyer B now owns the game. Buyer A does too. 2 copies of the game exist and circulate, when one was purchased. See the problem?

I'm not pretending to hold any sort of high ground. Whenever someone brings up piracy and why it's really wrong (in the case of used games, at least) someone inevitably says, as you did, "It's illegal. End of story". Frankly I could give a shit about what the law says if I feel the law is incorrect, foolish, or pointless. The law is not the ultimate moral barometer. I'm not trying to say I'm better than you because I buy new games, I'm trying to say that you're not better than me because you follow copyright laws to the letter.

Edit-misread what you wrote the first time. No one here is arguing that pirating new games is a good thing. I don't care it 10 million copies of Radiant Silvergun are circulating at the moment; neither the sales of the legitimate copies nor the burned ones are helping Treasure any. "Having something you're not supposed to have" makes you sound like the parent of a small child. Try to use slightly more advanced arguments as to why my owning pirated copies of games I can't buy new hurts anybody. And I'll preempt the "Why don't you just wait for every game to go off the market and then pirate it": Because I'm not trying to steal from publishers and developers, obviously.

I buy new games so the people that made the games get their peice of the pie. If its something I can't buy new, I'll buy it used.

If there isn't a way for me to buy something new, I'll buy it used, but I'd rather have new if the possibility is there.

Although nothing beats a freshly sealed brand new copy of a game, I occasionally go for the used games if the package looks intact and the game is in good condition. I own used copies of Skies of Arcadia and SFIII: DI and they run just fine.

If the game I want is something I'm desperately after, then I'll buy new because that usually means I'm buying the day it comes out. I also buy new for games that I know will not sell well normally and I like supporting the lesser-known games that I know will not sell well but are great stuff (Rez, Gitaroo Man, Frequency, Stretch Panic, Bangai-O, Way of the Samurai), and usually reserve those.

Used games are usually games that I know I don't want to spend full price on but might enjoy for a brief amount of time (FFX [$20]) or is simply too good a deal for me to pass up (I bought Pikmin today for $15, got Skies of Arcadia for $10, and found a second copy of SFIII:TS for $5, but eventually gave that one to a 2D fighting game lacking friend). However, the game must be in good condition with no scratches as should the case and manual. I'll accept some creases and not-perfect care if it's really cheap, but at least the disc must be immaculate.

However, I'll pick up most anything used for $5 or less if it seems like it might interest me at all.

99.9% new, because people crap on their hands and refuse to wash, so you end up with a collection of slime deposits on the case and game.

I've built up a collection of over 80 classic games over the past few years only buying new stuff (it costs more, but definitely worth it).

So I'm really picky on what I buy and what condition I buy it in. Quality over quantity all the way.

Sealed games I own: Contra, Blades of Steel, Duck Tales and Silent Bomber (only because I just got it in the mail!). I intend on opening them all someday, but opening NES games is always a tad painful.

I'll usually only buy a game new if I want it really bad, or can't find it used. Otherwise, I really can't justify spending three times as much for shrinkwrap.

I could not care less whether a game is new, complete and in mint condition (cartridges at least) UNLESS I'm paying through the nose for it, which doesn't happen often.


I have over 70 Genesis games, most of which i bought used and are cartridge only, I have 5 SNES games, cartridge only.


But for some strange reason, I do care when it comes to disc games, I don't know, there's just something about looking at a CD case without the instruction manual that turns me off or having to play a disc that's all scratched up.


So for cartridge games I could not care less, for disc games, I care.

You can play a scratched cartridge - you can't ( sometimes ) play a scratched disc. I just don't like anyone touching my CD's except me.

I buy new most of the time. If I see a copy of a game used that is in perfect condition, then I'll buy it. Most of the time the used games I buy are old and new copies are hard to come by. Buying new games used isn't really worth it as most of the time the price is almost the exact same.

I don't trust any1 with my games, so I don't like use games cause I don't now how good they are. Also I love the smell of a new game when you opened

It's funny to see the levels of corporate loyalty being displayed in this thread. But, let me assure you that even the smallest developer does not share such damp-eyed idealism about "the democracy of the market".

Anyway, if Sega gets into financial difficulties again, I'm sure they could whip up some accounting changes so they can hang around for another 5-10 years.

Or maybe they'll enter into the red again, sell to Nintendo like we would want them to, and watch as we all piss on Sony and Microsoft, laughing the whole way.

If there existed a console wherein I could get all of Nintendo's and Sega's hot titles...a single console...I'd be extremely happy. Screw everyone else.

Yeah, that's a wet dream of mine. Sega could go second party. Never thought we'd see the blue hedgehog on a Nintendo system. So, we're half-way there, already.

%50 of my game library is comprised of used games. When it comes to cart games I don't really care what condition it's in as long as it works and the label is still in good shape.

As for disc games I only buy them if the instruction booklet and case are in good shape and the disc works properly.

As for new games, I only buy them if the game is on sale, or if it's a relatively new game and a cheaper price cannot be had by buying used.

Which is the point of the my post in the first place. In sales of video games, there are many parties involved. There is the company who makes/manufactures it. There is the retailer who sells it. The customer who purchases it. And possibly any other secondary, tertiary, etc customers who may/may not end up getting that copy.

You say you care about the game companies and industry, and that's a noble thing. I would guess that 95% of game-players don't. But that's not the issue I'm speaking of. Your argument basically includes game makers, but excludes everyone else. That's why my "parenting" comment is appropriate.

Let's look at a scenario.

I buy Radiant Silvergun for roughly $40 in 1998. It suddenly becomes popular sometime afterwards. It's now 2002. The game still goes for $150ish on Ebay. You decide that you don't care for Ebay capitalists and Treasure ain't making the game anymore, so you all of a sudden have a right to burn the game? Uh... wth?

Ok. Why did I have to spend $40, when you get to spend nothing? (Answer: Because I'm supposed to.) Why did someone else have to spend $183.59 on Ebay, when you get to spend nothing? (Answer: Because they're supposed to. Law of supply/demand in action.)

So because RS ended up being such a huge hit, one can try to justify a pirated disc of it? Yet if RS just plain sucked and no one cared, you would just pick it up in the store?

You may think the Ebay scalper is inheritently evil, because they are seeking to make a profit on the game. (Tho you know, prices are only high because customers are willing to pay it.) But the fact of the matter is, they've earned their right to do whatever they please with their copy of RS. You haven't earned your right to own it.

Do you see the problem? Yes, I know that this RS example may not even apply. I have no idea if you pirated the game, and no idea if you even care about the game. But it's a perfect example where quite a few points come to light.

Yes, at least the way you have presented yourself, you are better off than most of the people out there. Because you consider first whether your actions will hurt the game companies. But I criticize your line of thinking, because you don't consider anything else. Piracy is all encompassing.

I can't see pirating a game, only if used ones are available. I look at it this way, at least a used game sitting at a store like Gamestop, was traded in with the possibility of someone taking that money and buying a new game. The publisher of the new game see's the cash they deserve for publishing it, and the used game seller can recoup the losses taken from the used game by selling it. Everyone gets their deserved money.



On to the subject. I buy new games, when they are the must have titles I want. I buy used games, if they are in near mint or mint condition. I've bought plenty of used SNES, NES, Genesis, and VB games used, with manuals, boxes and mint condition cartridges. I had a large collection of DC, N64 and PSX games in new/mint condition, but they were stolen last year. I've replaced most of those titles with used one's, and some new, as availability often forced me to buy them used. I'll only buy used games if they are in mint condition, unless availability forces me to buy them in less than desireable condition.


Now as far as having games that are'nt opened. Only those games that I have more than one copy of, will I leave the second or third copy unopened. Those games that are unopened are that way, because I bought them at a great price, and would like a backup copy, or I know that I can sell them for a huge profit later, because I bought them at a very cheap price.

You could make the argument that money not spent on used games can be put towards new stuff.

To answer Tsubaki, I do infact recognize that piracy hurts EB and Ebay sellers. My stance on that has always been very simple, I don't care. EB charges more than everyone else and their stuff isn't even really new. I choose to support the actual developers and retailers who charge less for games still in the shrinkwrap.

That's rather weak. Just about every time I go into a store like Gamestop or EB, someone is trading their used games in, to get the next must own new game. People that are buying the used games, balance out the equation. The prices at EB are pretty much the same as most retailers, when it comes to the new games. The industry sets the retail cost of the new games, so the price is in most occasions, the same at all electronic's retailers.

Well that was my point. Whether you care for these people or not, it's irrelevant. That's why piracy is wrong, and unjustifiable even if you are looking out for the gaming market, which is a good thing. I understand WHY you don't care about EB/Ebay sellers. But that's entirely different from trying to say you have every right to pirate, given those circumstances.

And anyway, what about my scenario? I bought RS for $40. Someone else buys it for $180. How come you get it for free? You can pull the "I don't care" rule on us too, but fact of the matter is you're not supposed to have it for free.

Now as for the RS scenario, it is unfair. It would be nice if everyone could buy any game they wanted new, and then noone would have any excuses. Again I realize it's unfair to some and certainly illegal, but can you really blame someone for pirating a game they'd otherwise have to pay hundreds for? What if they write Treasure a cheque, would they be in the right then despite legality? I don't need anyone to explain supply and demand to me. So some Ebay vulture can't take advantage of current market conditions, is that really so awful? What did they do to deserve profiting from that game? Well they lucked out really, and I don't think the reward is deserved.

In the end it really is a case of I don't care, despite whatever laws are in place. It's not like I'm out murdering people and trying to excuse it with "well I don't think it's really anything to get worked up over". I'm just not being a model capitalist.

No excuses, I know what I'm doing and I have no problem with it. Some will hate me for it, and I say let them.

The difference between pirating and buying second-hand is that you have the potential for mass replication and distribution with piracy. Whereas that one SMB/Duck Hunt cart can only move from one owner to another at a time, and it's a reasonably safe bet that Nintendo saw some money for it at one point or another.

But seriously... who cares? Or, more specifically, who cares enough to the point that they're going to harass and belittle people on a message board whom they barely know in the interests of splitting a few moral and legal hairs?

I buy new whenever I can, and when I buy used I try to buy only complete mint/near mint. Sometimes, when I'm having trouble finding something, I dont mind just buying the cart or CD, but if I find it again complete and minty, I'll buy it again. For instance I just recently bought Shadowrun complete and minty for the Genesis, even though I already had the cart. It was just the cart though, and the lable is a little messed up. So I actually found out something new, when in Cyber space, executing a program with diffrent buttons give you diffrent postures. A = offensive, B = neutral, C = defensive. Im sure that will help out.

If anyone wants a cart of Shadowrun.. lemme know before I sell it.

I prefer to buy games new, but if I can find them at a decent price in decent, working condition, I'm happy to buy them secondhand. A few scratches in a CD or DVD can always be removed with a disc repair kit. ^_~

Now as for the RS scenario, it is unfair. It would be nice if everyone could buy any game they wanted new, and then noone would have any excuses. Again I realize it's unfair to some and certainly illegal, but can you really blame someone for pirating a game they'd otherwise have to pay hundreds for? What if they write Treasure a cheque, would they be in the right then despite legality? I don't need anyone to explain supply and demand to me. So some Ebay vulture can't take advantage of current market conditions, is that really so awful? What did they do to deserve profiting from that game? Well they lucked out really, and I don't think the reward is deserved.

Look at it, as a person that buys stock in an unknown company. They bought the stock cheap, and reap the returns, when the stock price goes up. Same goes for buying a game, that will be worth more in the future. The person made the investment, and will get the larger return, for laying the money out, in the first place.


I'll admit though. If I had an opportunity, to get a burned copy of RS, I would'nt turn it down, as $100 + for a used game is a gamble. I don't even know if I'd like the game. If I did, I would then try to find a seller with a legit copy, so as to have a complete game.

Here's a more interesting question:

Would you buy a game that you already own? I would, depending on the game and the condition of course. While I have the Famicom version of Metal Gear, I want a complete copy of the game just for the manual (which was way different and better than the Japanese one) and to have one of the collector's card that came with the game.
