Thinking of Seeing More of the World

My life is alright, it's mediocre I have things pretty easy and always have, and part of me feels that I've never pushed myself. Plus life being "Ok" isn't really good enough to me, life should be great and I should take the opportunities that are there to do so. I really want to see more of the world, one thing a friend of mine suggested was selling most my stuff, and vagabonding about south America or some third world countries, sure no one actually likes it, but it's certainly an experience with very little to compare.

So that's one option I'm weighing, the other right now is Peace Corps, which would get me out of the country and allow me to better the world, also at less personal expense and I won't be a vagabonding homeless man in Africa.

I feel that I'm a bit of a boring person, I don't have much to share and part of it is because I've never really... done anything too interesting, I don't have fascinating life experiences and I'd hate to go through life without them.

Has anyone else done anything like traveling or peace corps who may be able to advise? Or perhaps anyone with some ideas how I could maybe get more fulfillment from my life, though I understand it's a personal thing, not something a lot of people can really advise on.

Do it now. Later there will be lots more reasons not to.

I'm planning too, right now I have a car, and live with some friends, but I have no pets, the girl I'm dating will be gone later in the year, my job while nice and comfortable, isn't really going anywhere. The question is what do I want to do, and how do I want to go about it.

student loans etc can be deferred, I worry a bit about paying off my car though.

Go for it Thief. I never have any inclination to do stuff like this but do admire people who go thru with it.

Also, Thief, I'm going to second everyone who's saying to do it. I had two friends who putzed around China and Asia for the better part of a year and they not only came back noticeably changed, but they had a bunch of interesting stories to tell. Supposedly they said it put their life and troubles into real perspective, and after they took that trip I've never seen them happier.

Every now and again I'll have a fleeting daydream about doing something similar, but I don't know if I'll ever go through with it. There's a couple things in my life right now that I'm waiting to see how they turn out.

Also, my buddies who traveled through China and Asia did so VERY cheaply. Like, less than $10 a day cheaply. They said spending $20 a day was being lavish. They stayed at hostels and used www.couchsurfing.com to keep things simple and cheap.

Yeah Hostels and Couchsurfing is one of the possibilities I'm considering a good deal.

I've tried for the Peace Corps and it's much more competitive than you seem to realize. I have a 3.5 GPA, volunteered for six years (not the last two of college because I had too much on my plate), am a member of a national honor society, have tutored ESL (English as a Second Language) kids for four years, and was PUBLISHED in newspapers and magazines and worked as a reporter for many years part time while attending college and working another job. I did all of this while still jamming with a band and a drinking/drug habit and I STILL didn't get in.

You didn't do shit worth talking about until we all made fun of you in New York. You're not getting in.

The two people I know who've done it have done significantly less than you, so I don't really think it's entirely about that.

And I'm not saying I will get in or anything so egotistical, just that to say it's not even worth trying is some retarded bullshit.

If you don't volunteer, don't bother.
