I've traveled a bit. The longest period I spent away from home was 7 months in eastern europe and I don't regret it at all.
Nothing about traveling was really all that eye-opening for me. It really just reaffirmed what I already knew/suspected about humanity and the world.
In my experience, anyone that comes back a changed person was young and naive to begin with, and traveling was a sort of coming of age experience for them.
That's not to say that it's not a worthwhile experience at any age or maturity level. It's just that the younger you are when you do it, the greater the impact it'll have.
Also, don't sell all of your stuff unless it's all junk or you don't plan on returning.
Maybe. They were still in university at the time. It could be that their employer helped them get visas or just didn't care. I doubt anyone could stay in japan for that long on a tourist visa, though.
It was a few years ago, so maybe demand for english instructors was higher then, but from what I gathered, they had no shortage of opportunities.
They had to have been on a student visa or a cultural activities visa and working illegal. Japanese immigration law requires that you give proof of a bachelor's degree to get a work visa, and you always have to have an employer's help for one.
Has nothing to do with demand, immigration law has been like this for a long time.
