Ole Wytchwood, their beers are pretty alright, Hobgolin is easily their best (that I've had). I hear tell that it's the rage at Oxford (for what its worth). I have a question for this thread! Yuengling is something I used to get requests for down here. I know it's not available in Texas, but what am I missing? Is this shit any good or is it just a passable, inexpensive microbeer or worse, is it some swill that only people east of the Mississippi get?
Hobgoblin is my go to favorite beer. It's not... really special. I just think it's really solid. My bar in VA had it on tap, it was great.
There is nothing special about Yuengling.
Yuengling isn't worth seeking out, but it's a solid choice if you're in territories where it's common and cheap. In the part of PA I grew up in it's pretty much the standard - bartenders sometimes act like it's odd if you ask for it by name, if anyone asks for lager they generally expect Yuengling. When I'm in town, for $2 a pop (or free when I have bartender friends working) it works just fine.
Ok, so it's like east coast Shiner. Got it.
Yuengling tastes like skunked beer.
You should probably stop drinking skunked Yuengling.
+1. It's priced like Bud Light but it tastes pretty good. When you're in the market for a cheap case of beer, or want something to go with some pizza after a day at work, Yuengling works well.
I agree completely. Yuengling is a decent beer, the Light version not as much, but it's tastey and goes well with whatever late night food you decide to order. I'll take it over most other "draft" beers any night cuz it pours pretty good and is generally "top shelf" in terms of what these places don't have in bottles. Fuck the haters, there are many better beers, but there are many MANY worse ones.
Like I said, it sounds like Shiner. It's no prize pig, but it's a hell of a lot better than other beers at its price. Actually, Shiner sounds better, but not by a lot - only because they offer a Hefe, Schwartz, and Blonde as well as the standard Bock.
A friend who transferred to Texas earlier this year reported that he prefers Yuengling Lager just slightly to the Bock.
At least it's still privately and American owned. That's good enough for me.
Shiner and Yuengling are drank more out of tradition than taste. Yuengling for being the beer Benjamin Franklin would pour on titties he was about to motorboat, and Shiner Hefe being the bottle Sam Houston would shake up furiously and insert into a lady's vagina, a popular trick known as the 'frothy dog' he picked up from Davy Crockett in the great war.
Yuengling's stock just went up after hearing that.
It was a differnt time, you see.
Hubbitron got me seats for a fancy beer tasting next weekend!

Very interested in the ten year old stout!
Damn that's quite a lineup. I predict you're drunk less than halfway through the tasting and forget what everything else tastes like.
Still, rock.
Want to make a bet on that?
I'm just betting on the fact that you're not the hardcore drinker you were, and that is a lot of beer. Some of which I will assume is a decent alcohol content. If not halfway, I would bet on 3/4 the way through.
I like that Brooklyn Black Ops a lot! Looking forward to report on the rest.
A lot of beer in 4oz glasses that I'll be splitting with my girlfriend.
Just saying...
my roommate brought me a bottle of this last night. yummy, but not quite as rich as i would have liked. nice coffee flavor, a little bit of bitterness at the end. i liked it. however my friend who had a bit said "tastes like drinking beer after doing coke." im not sure about that, but i guess it didnt appeal to his taste.
I've got a bunch of this in my fridge. Mr. K introduced it to me in London and the we found a pub down the block from my flat called Hobgoblin...with Hobgoblin on tap. Everything that Wychwood Brewery does is top notch. Their Wychcraft beer is one of my favorite beers ever, although Hobgoblin is certainly the easiest to find.
I posted this in the coors light thread by accident:
Got my notes from the fancy time beer tasting I went to today. I'm pretty sick, so I didn't stick around as long as I wanted to, but that's life.
Brooklyn Black Ops
Coffee, wood, smoke, high alcohol flavour. Second favourite beer of the day.
A Leq Qoc 1999
No carbonation. Velvety. Appropriately bitter. Very smooth. Solids at bottom of glass.
A Leq Qoc 2003
Same as 99 but not as mellow. More of an alchol taste.
Heavy Weight Saison De La Sour
Light, refreshing, citrus, summer beer. Pilsner spiked with orange juice.
Ommegang Cave Aged Abbey
Farty aftertaste. No perceptable difference from normal bottles.
De Molen Rasputin
Cocoa, coffee, thick mouthfeel, low alchol flavour, almost sweet? Favorite beer of the day.
Schlafy Oak Barleywine
Caramel, thick, nutty. Oak. Standard barleywine. Tasted like the cork?
Thomas Hardy 1999
Thick, very sweet, syrupy, like scotch ale with candy melted in it.
Ooooh! La de dah!
Also: Josh likes Qoc
Which was the best?
New Favorite beer of the week:
Downtown Brown, by Lost Coast Brewery. I like dark chocolaty beers and this one fits the bill. Also my last name is brown, and I feel a strange kinship...
This is a beer I found mysteriously in the fruit drawer of fridge. I have the greatest friends.. hiding little present for me to find later.
I've only gotten about 5 hours of sleep in the last day or so.
Has anyone tried the Sam Adams Imperial White? It's almost $10 for a 4-pack, which scares me a bit for something I don't know anything about.
What FB said.
Truth.
except the cranberry lambic, which tastes like fruity puke. that stuff is the exact opposite of drinkable.
I am on a desperate search for Dogfish Squall IPA. If any of you find it buy me a bottle. We'll work out specifics on shipment and payment later.
Talk to Hao, I'm sure he knows where it's at.
two turntables and a microphone.
Is it as good as Aventinus? I've never tried that one.
It's different. Avi is wheat, so it's not really like any other double bock.
You can typically find it at World Market:
http://www.worldmarket.com/storeLocator/index.jsp
But the real question. Is it even available right now? The people at my store, who are normally quite good, just gave me blank stares when I was asking about it.
It that was all Sam Adams did, I wouldn't mind a bit.
On a whim today, I tried a Sam Smith's Organic Cider. I have never had a cider before, and I can usually trust Sam Smith's for a safe representation of a brew style.
I didn't really like it. It was okay, but compared to beer, its flavor profile was so thin; sweet, carbonated, but without complexity. Is this what I should expect? I have heard that the most commonly available ciders in the US are pretty much garbage, but I was still hoping for more.
I picked up a pretty good cider at Whole Foods once. It tasted like it was actually made from apples rather than something like Strongbow which is way nasty sweet.
I bought Budweiser American Ale for the lulz. It was inoffensive.
I had Magner's Irish cider in Chicago. Shit was pretty good (I wasn't partial to the Woodchuck or Strongbow I had tried). Can't find it for sale anywhere around here, though, none of the liquor stores have even heard of it.
I've been told K Cider is good. It's supposed to be dry, but I don't know personally.
K Cider is pretty bangin', I'd buy it if I was into ciders.
Woodchuck Granny Smith. Blv.
(Strongbow is the most vile drink known to man)
Original Sin ftw.
Tried a Worldwide Stout again. Harsh.
I think I'll hold on to the other two bottles I have until I'm 40 or so... maybe they'll mellow out a little bit by then.
Sam's Imperial Series is fucking disgusting.
The Imperial White is the only one I like, but the ABV overwhelms the flavor imo. Makes it too dry.
The Imperial Stout is like drinking molasses. It puts hair on your chest, but it's an absolutely disgusting drink. I ordered it in a bar @ $6 or $7, drank 1/4 of it, and had to stop. It was vile.
The Double Bock tastes like soy sauce.
SA Double is a winner. Triple is.. well it's interesting.
Off to go pick up a fancy beer or three.
Right now: Victory Hop Wallop
Next: Weyerbacher Zotten - This one's new to me.

Next: Weyerbacher Zotten - This one's new to me.
Sierra Nevada 13th Harvest Wet Hop Ale.
Tastes like drinking a hoppy pine tree. I mean this in a good way. Has a good bite, and an appropriate mouthfeel for the flavour. Go pick up a bottle, ok?
Next up is Dogfish Chicory Stout, might not get to that until tomorrow though.
I also found a bottle of Dogfish Pangea, but I'm saving it for Thanksgiving.
I went to a bar with Left Hand Milk Stout on tap last night. I really enjoyed it.
I didn't expect to like the Milk Stout but it's really pretty good.
I had a Porter the other night that tasted like chicken wings dipped in ranch, it was not good.
Nasty!
Last I heard from Left Hand, they were kegging the milk stout to go on nitrogen. This is exciting news.
Hopefully you aren't like a lot of ppl I introduce expensive beer to that say "let me spit out my gum first...."
First, it wasn't that expensive. Second, come on, give me more credit than that. I didn't brush my teeth and start drinking.
I did some shopping today. I went to this place famous for their selection of soda. Their soda selection was epic, but the beer selection was only average. They didn't have a lot of the stuff I was looking for so I ended up with some random stuff. I walked out with
Rogue Mocha Porter
Rogue Chipotle Ale
Wells Banana Bread Beer
Stone Smoked Porter
Hobgoblin
Lagunitas Cappuchino Stout
Aspall Organic English Draft Cider
Woodchuck fall cider
sodas - elderflower, lavender, espresso coffee, cucumber, and mint jelup
Ciders are for my girlfriend. One of the things I was looking for was JK Scrumpy's Organic cider, which they didn't have. If anyone wants a really great cider keep an eye out for that.
I found one of my new favorite cheap drunks at Trader Joe's of all places. They have this shit called Simpler Times or something that's 6 percent, in cans and 4 bucks a six-pack.
I've had that, not bad for what it is. Comparable to MGD or something. $3.99!
I picked up a sixer of Lagunitas Brown Shugga the other day. It is the steel reserve of craft beer.
Can we talk wine in here or should we have a separate thread?
I'd call for a separate thread?
I wouldn't drink wine at a pub.
See Trader Joe's isn't so bad.
I know I work there but I mean, I like it. Just lots of salt in a lot of things, and garlic, which kind of makes a lot of the most popular stuff created for the lowest common denominator taste.
Hopefully not in their beer!
Bought a $10, ~26 ounce bottle of Blue Moon Cru last night.
Looking forward to cracking it open. If it's anything like the Cru's I've had in the past, I expect deliciousness.
Wolavers Coffee Porter.
Amazing. Go get some.
http://www.victorybeer.com/golden_monkey.aspx
Victory Brewing's Golden Monkey Belgian. God. Damn.
Smooth, not too much of a kick like typical strong Belgians. I only wish they still had this on tap at the pub. :(
Golden Monkey is the jam.
I've been liking the coffee beers lately, Yeti was nice.
It's really easy to drink too many Golden Monkeys.
Recent beer roundup
Rogue Chipotle Ale - Very interesting. I like the pepper in the finish.
Wells Banana Bread Beer - I liked it a lot but it's mostly good for the novelty. Girls would really like it. Kind of artificial though, and by the end of the bottle I was done.
Avery Brewing, The Beast - This is like a kitchen sink beer. They threw everything in and the result is intense. It has a very heavy sweetness, like molasses with tons of fuit. If anything it's over done. My first reaction was " wow, weird beer". GF thought it was gross, but I was intrigued. 15% alcohol. This beer drinks you.
Mikkeller, Beer Geek Breakfast - This is an oatmeal coffee stout. I thought it was awesome. One of my recent favorites.
The Bruery, Two Turtle Doves - This is a holiday beer made with cocao nibs and roasted pecans. It doesn't have the spice most holiday brews have. If it wasn't labeled a holiday beer I wouldn't have guessed it. This is not a bad thing. It's a really great beer with tons of rich chocolaty flavor. It's nice and thick too. It feels right.
Reaper Ale, Mortality Stout - One of the worst beers I've ever had. Tastes like vomit. Must have been skunked? I've never had a seemingly quality beer go this bad though...
Tried some Southern Tier "Krampus" last night, very tasty! A counter-holiday beer.

third or fourthed on the Golden Monkey
The liquor store just got in their shipment of Ten Fidy. I was so tempted to load up on it, but $13 per 4-pack makes my wallet cry.
Good times my friend
You betcha. One of the many highlights of St. Patty's for sure.
Anyone have Vertical Epic 08? I went to the liquor store to make a beer package for my bro, I was happy to find VE. Then I get home and actually look at it and it is 08, not 09! I assume it's good, but I kind of wanted to give him stuff I knew already.
I'll trade you an 09 for an 08...
Josh,
Oh hay wat?
Christmas weekend is craft beer weekend.
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale - Tastes like a hoppy pine tree. ok, but wouldn't get again.
Troggs Mad Elf - honey and cherries, had at room temperature. nice after dinner beer.
Delerium Noel - seasonal spiced Belgian. Surprisingly perfect with pastitso.
Allagash Dubbel Reserve: Batch 75 - Amber colour, malty, slightly sweet. Rebecca's favourite beer. Not enough bite to it, imo, but still rather tasty.
Allagash Trippel Reserve: Batch 133 - light in colour, good hop presence. My favourite beer of the weekend. Allagash makes some very good beers.
Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout - the perfect desert beer. Very thick, very strong. Tastes like creme brulee. DERP
Dogfish 120min: 2008 - aging this for a couple years really took away the harsh alcohol taste up front that this beer is known for. I want to say it was almost like a barley wine?
Next weekend we are cracking open a 2007 Worldwide stout. I'm very curious about what a little aging has done to this one. I hope its actually drinkable! The 2009 I had a few months back really wasn't.
Oh, Hubbard and I were having a pissing contest, here is my entry:
Click for full size
He still wins for having a 6 year old bottle of 120 min given to him by the founder of Dogfish, but whatever.
I wrote this and took the pictures, http://biermagazine.com/wordpress/20...-of-christmas/
