Playing honest covers =/= reassembling and repacking classic material then calling it original.
(Physical) talent alone does not make a good artist.
There are plenty of talented players who are poor artists (Yngwie J. Malmsteen, anyone?)
And lots of poor players who are talented artists (tons of metal and punk bands).
Nihilist is hands-down the most important band in the development of death metal in Europe.
They changed their name to Entombed when the bassist left to go form his own band (Unleashed) and then put out "Left Hand Path," which is a bunch of old Nihilist songs rerecorded.
The album's influence is legendary, as it came to define the "Swedish" sound of the early 1990s, which has recently been commercialized and popularized by bands like Ribspreader and Bloodbath.
I base my judgments on the art itself, not the people who make it.
Art provides ideals/guides for how we should, might, can live -- it is nothing new to see the people behind the art failing to match the ideals of the art itself; this happens to even the best artists (Wagner's racism/nazism, Schumann's insanity, Schubert's syphilis, etc.).
People are imperfect, art, when it's good, can be perfect.
That is why I spend more time studying the art and less time studying the men behind it; men change over time, but the art forever represents the men as they should be (and want to be) remembered: at their ideal.
