Hipster: The Dead End Of Western Civilization

In some ways, weeman's last reply makes sense.

but then I am reminded of all the metal bands he listens too and the things he says about the bands he likes and does not like. And I espically think about how most of them have stupid names and write said names like they are made of spit and guts.

And if I further ponder, and think those things that must be thunk, I wonder (oh, yes, I wonder) is this what it is like when people see me actually make a good point? Do they think back to times long gone and muse over silly things that have come forth from thine fingers?

But Guns n' Roses with their Appetite for Destruction nonsense... What a bunch of hipsters! Guitar, lead guitar, bass, drums, singer. Totally repackaging Aerosmith's (who obviously just repackaged the Yardbirds) arrangement with no innovation at all! I mean, maybe if Axel played Trombone I could seriously listen to Appetite, but as it stands...Total hipster garbage! But then when they covered songs on The Spaghetti Incident, then that was cool. Since they were covers and all.

Leaving troll-mode for a moment...

You're venom towards "hipsters" may be justified, wEEman, but you don't have a clear view of you enemy's nature.

For instance, a band's legitimacy has nothing to do with their lifestyle of debauchery whether or not other bands in that genre rebel against that lifestyle. The band's acceptance in a subculture depends on that stuff, but their music may be perfectly legitimate otherwise. In other words, a subculture does not "own" any genre. A bunch of black dudes from New York could make a bangin' country album if they were so inspired. It wouldn't make them part of the Alabama culture. But it would still be a bangin' country album.

Since music is so closely tied to life experience, the confusion can be hard to avoid. You see metal come from people who share the same rebellious ideas because that lifestyle and those values breed metal. But that does not mean metal can't also pop up somewhere else from different-minded people. And that doesn't make that metal is any less "metal". It just means that one metal band doesn't come from the same mind set.

On the subject of innovation... Innovation is certainly not needed for greatness. Thus the cliche, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". If every artist had to innovate, art would never be refined. One of humanity's great traits is that we do take from those who came before us and try to refine. Some of the best music out there is squarely in it's genre's established "comfort zone" and just focuses on great composition and performance. Like Appetite for Destruction. Just straight-up guitar music done to perfection.

Not to say innovation isn't welcomed. Things would stagnate otherwise. So maybe some of the changes you see in metal aren't signs of metal being downgraded by hipsters. Maybe it's innovation that just isn't doing it for you.

That's the thing about innovation. Sometimes it doesn't work. Sometimes it works for some and not for others. Sometimes it hits all the way and sometimes it falls flat on its face.

In short:
*Be aware of the divide between culture and music
*Be aware of the difference between music that flat-out sucks and music with real merit that you just don't like. Sometimes that's part of a song's merit: that everybody doesn't like it.
*Be aware that not every band in a genre has to fall in line with every body else's values.

And always remember the words of Tenacious D:
"You cannot kill the metal. The metal will live on."
