FEAR 2 should be good. It's a straight up corridor shooter with fun weapons.
I haven't played one since I finally got Bioshock back in the summer. Killzone 2 looks good. Other than that, I have no plans to play any others.
Killzone 2 and Halo Recon this year and I don't forsee anything else on the horizon. I don't even play FPS much (really Halo and Resistance) but I'm a little tired of these games as well.
I don't think I'll burn out on them because I only play a few FPS series. I've been playing for more than 10 years and still have lots of fun with them. I do play lots of different thing, esp 8-16 bit games , so I think I strike a balance there.
BEGINNING? I've been FPS'ed out for a long time, however I made an exception for Call of Duty 4 and World at War.
ESPECIALLY WWII FPSs. How many times are you to going to tell the same story? I know I'm going to get Call of Duty 5 when it comes up (cuz of the multiplayer) but at least it's not going to be set in WWII.
I'm liking Mirror's Edge! And Left4Dead is super rad! Oh oh and Fallout 3 too! So I guess I'm not FPS'd out.
Maybe you need to stick with good games?
I only play maybe 2 or 3 per year, so nah.
And modern warfare isn't played out as well as a setting ? Besides FPS's like Undying and Bioshock, I'm not playing these games for narrative, I'm playing them to shoot other people in multiplayer. I only play the single player part of the game whenever none of my friends are online or I'm just burned out in general. If I hear that a single player part of a FPS has some great set-pieces, then I may play through just to see them, but in general, multiplayer is my drug of choice.
The last FPS I gave a shit about was Decent.
I used to be as anti-FPS as I am anti-proprietary handheld, because I was highly bothered by how people could decry fighting games or RPGs or shooters as all being the same game over and over again with one breath and praise 50 flavors of Quake with the next. I don't care that much about it now. The FPSes which retain a fanbase today tend to have a good reason to do so.
That being said - for years to come I'll likely not buy any FPS and won't play any on my own independent free time in that same period. This means I'm great kill fodder in group or party settings, so everyone else gets to have a good time at my expense. Hooray.
I got FPS'd out about 13 years ago with Doom for PSOne.
I like to shoot things and see people/monster die by headshots.
I see a ton of great looking, non-FPS coming so even if I was sick of the genre, I wouldn't be worried.Quote:

Yeah, there are certainly some great looking non-FPS games coming out, but I think calling it a ton is a stretch. I'm welcome to being surprised, though.
Now it's right. Anyway, I know how you feel. I never really liked FPS games to begin with and ever since they became the dominant genre, my interest in video games has gone way down. There are still good/great games to be had. They are just few and far between.
Yeah. Mirror's Edge is a case where it's a first person game that isn't totally an FPS but you don't really feel like calling it something else. L4D Versus is awesome, and I'm loving Crysis and looking forward to starting Fallout 3 and Crysis Warhead.Quote:

Hell, between Quake Live and UT3, I'm right back into even the traditional DM games.
Generally like the genre, played a HELL of a lot of Quake III. "Black" was the game that kind of knocked me off the genre. It was terrrrrrible. Like a compeltely neutered Soldier of Fortune.
Since then, Half Life 2 was a big "meh", the Unreals continue to be second-stringers on all counts, and the most interesting things coming out of the genre seem to be variations on the theme, like Portal or Mirror's Edge.
Left 4 Dead is fucking cool, however.
I still enjoy FPS games even if I've played a thousand of them and many have been similar. But it all comes back to the one that I can still play to this day and have as much fun with as I did in 1999: Counter Strike. Shit is gold.
Pretty much this. I'd rather have something like COD4 with a realistic but fictional conflict than rehashing WWII over and over again. It's just not fun anymore.
I played Halo 2 and 3 for way too long as a social tool (honestly not a huge fan of the games in general) and I'll probably end up going again once Recon hits, for the new multiplayer stuff. Burned out a long time ago, but fortunately I never attempt to play them alone. When with friends, eh, it's something to do in the background while you joke around and catch up.
Hated World at War, though. Didn't feel fresh at all like COD4 did to me.
Rock Band > Halo as a social tool.
If you are FPS'd out, you are a piece of shit
go back to playing Lego Buttfarmer
That's a TERRIBLE FPS.
I got burned out on FPSs around 2000, but I came back more recently. I think the genre has gotten a lot more diverse. STALKER is nothing like Bioshock is nothing like Crysis is nothing like UT3 is nothing like L4D.
There's also more interesting stuff happening on the periphery of the genre. Mirror's Edge, Fallout 3, Portal, and Dark Messiah might not completely fit the definition of the genre, but they're derivative of it and they're doing some very interesting things that will probably end up influencing the genre proper.
I don't think I could ever get FPS'd out. Not ever. I love shooting fuckers in the face.
Say. Is that new Aliens game still coming out?
The genre was pretty diverse around 2000. Quake III, No One Lives Forever, Starsiege: Tribes, Deus Ex, Requiem: Avenging Angel, etc. are all very different. It did sort of enter a less innovative period after that for a few years (although I still found enough good games). The rise of the internet in the mainstream made developers focus more on multiplayer, too, although I think that trend ended with the success of Half-Life 2. I don’t think multiplayer or single player are being neglected in the genre today.
Requiem was definitely before I got burned out. So it might have been more like 2001 or so. The multiplayer focus was definitely a major reason I lost interest, but there was also less diversity going on then. Half Life 2 was indeed the game that brought me back to the genre and there were a number of good games that followed that.
Yes. "Q1 2009," apparently.

Man, the potential for that game is enough to make you want to slap someone.
Particularly if it doesn't meet that potential.
I'm looking forward to that one. FEAR 2 should be a little more challenging than the first. Instead of 10 life packs of 50 health, you now can carry only 3 life packs- but they'll give you FULL health when used.
Doom 64 > Doom 3. Being jumped by 8 zombie soldiers or imps, mowing them down in 3.2 seconds with the chaingun, and taking one last look at the carnage littering the ground before you move on = priceless. I don't recall that in Doom 3. Thank goodness for the ports of Ultimate Doom & Doom II on the Xbox limited collector's edition.
And yet not a single one is as good.
Get on your PCs and join us in Starcraft.
For $20-30, Left 4 Dead could almost get me back into the genre. ALMOST.
L4D is only worth $20-$30. Its a fun game but the lack of levels, weapon and different strategies makes it a rip off at 50-60.
Yeah, I really enjoyed the demo of it with some friends, but for $60 for what, 4 or 5 levels or something? No thanks.
Versus mode says you're both wrong. So do the sustained NPD results if you're into that stuff.
$50 for 20 maps sounds roughly par for course. Dunno what some of you guys are thinking.
frp rpg's like bioshock and deus ex, i love, but i dont really have the internet connection for smooth competitive play, and single player i really cant get into just action fps'. So id say im sick of regular fps' but throw me in some rpg stats and story depth and im back.
Does BulletWitch count amongst these (or is it a 3PS)? I don't know.
Yoshi, I left a message for you starting at the 1:55 mark of this video I recorded.
Apparently neither are Halo Recon and Resistance. I think Yoshi has lost the onion on his belt.
I can see the case for Mirror's Edge and Fallout 3, however. While first person perspective, I would disqualify them from FPS. Maybe this thread should be FPP'd out.
