Yoshi pays for Medicaid and TANF and I pay for endless war. Neither of us like it so much but this is the deal we strike living in a democratic system. Part of the system is giving people access so they can nudge it in the direction they want. It's part of the deal.
That deal has become increasing imbalanced in favor of Washington though. It's bordering on taxation without representation, no matter who you vote for.
edit: It would be a fascinating study to ask people if they could earmark their tax dollars what would get funded and what wouldn't. Now that would be democratic.
Most people are clueless about what taxes pay for. People think "foreign aid" makes up like 30% of the budget - in reality it's more like 2%, and the vast majority of it goes to Israel (which people support) or to Egypt as part of an Israel-related treaty.
Agreed, which is part of why it would be fascinating.

Vets don't deserve a little compassion? I thought only assholes hated vets.
Vets are an entirely different discussion to me. Taking care of them is part of what it takes to fund a strong military.

There are times when it's necessary to be a shit head, but vets shouldn't be optional. In fact, X% of every military budget should just go straight to the veterans and the like. Dissolve the VA and let them choose where to get their care with the money allocated to them for their service, almost like a different form of Social Security earned by risking their lives.
