I'd like to open up my own law office someday, but I don't have the money or the experience right now.

Hero, statistically yes you are better off with a degree. And you're doing what you want to do. Even if the money is the same as a Wal-mart greeter that is a significant step up.

I think a lot of people try to open their own business before they have enough capital to do it well. So I see it as "get educated, work a good job, and then start your own business."

Isn't it indicative of a problem when it takes considerable capital to start a new business with any real chance of success? Was it always like this?

I would think so. Maybe not in like, the mid 1800s when the gubment was giving away land for free (SOCIALISTS!), so you just go west and start a farm. But yea in general.

I would be terrified to start my own business. There's a space downtown that would make for a great bar/pub, but I'd rather not spend the rest of my life in financial ruin.
