A vocal, and relatively knowledgeable poster recently brought to my attention the peculiar case of completely fabricating reality.
Remembering to childhood, I recall instances of kids or adults telling me things that I absolutely know to be untrue. In most cases, besides superstition (weegee boards, religion, alien abductions, etc), a rational human being will yield or reconsider their position when presented with facts or even majority opinion.
In a recent instance on TNL, I thought it would be a kick to challenge a poster's fabrication.
I've never studied psychology, and generally dismiss people who BS me, but this one case was curious to me. How could someone who is apparently financially successful, generally knowledgeable and substantially educated be so bold as to stand by a complete lie?
A quick look on the internet illuminated the issues a little.
Two common conditions of recurring lying are referred to as either pathological, or compulsive.
This list of characteristics of a pathological lier seem to pointedly describe the forum member in question.
While the intention of initially calling this individual out was just for shits and giggles, I never guessed it would actually disturb me as a compassionate humanist. I expected a BS story and then maybe a hesitant admittance of some confusion or of being mistaken with a similar product or circumstance.
To persist with the fabrication just really confuses me.
Has anyone else experienced such a character?
