In an interview with developer Takashi Ichimura (also did first DS, this being his second "solo" game), he says it runs on new hardware that allows it to be "different from normal Cave shooting." Source.

With some more practice, yeah. I can consistently get through the first three stages on the highest difficulty without getting hit. And I can almost always get to the 6th stage on one credit (that fucking vertical scrolling stage always fucks me though, need to practice it more).
