I don't even like RPGs anymore, but this game looks pretty rad.
Too bad it's got to compete with AvP and Bad Company 2 for playing time, or otherwise, I might give it a shot.
Edit: Othello will never die!

LOL EA!
Quote:
Inside your case you'll find a code to unlock the Cerberus Network, the pipeline for DLC and new equipment inside the game. If you buy the game used or don't have a code, the network will cost you a stunning 1,200 Microsoft points, or $15. Let that sink in: you'll have to pay EA before you can buy stuff.

Crazy. Maybe I'll get this today after all.
I'm enjoying this game so far quite a bit, but I really miss the skill tracking and gear swapping RPG elements. I don't really like how bits are divided into missions either, where you only level up at the end, not gaining any experience from battle. It lessens some of the cool battle mechanics for me, using skills in some creative way to take out a group of guys or down a boss-type, when you're not getting xp rewards for anything.
Skill trees are substantially simplified. I was hoping they went the other way, actually, because you could pretty much just put points anywhere in ME1 and your guys would be fine (maybe making sure you had someone in your team with enough tech to open things, and having your FA covered). Now it doesn't even seem to matter who I bring with me in the party. So far it's usually just tits and the science guy.
Oddly, while trimming out most the RPG number tracking, they maintain this really boring resource grinding mini-game you need to do for upgrades.
The way they incorporate your ME1 save seems really cool, however, I don't know what happened to mine, so I had to go without. The default, past story choices they make for you are quite divergent from my experience, which is jarring (oh hey Kaidan oh wait didn't I KILL YOU). This, along with the RPG super-lite treatment, have made me a little salty in-game. Before I was pretty much all good, and now I regularly mouth off or destroy people that annoy me, and yet, I'm still swimming in Paragon points. Go figure.
Obviously, the brilliant art design and production expertise in ME2 goes without saying. It's very engaging, but I keep waiting to hit that point in RPGs where they open up and stop hand-holding, and you get a full sense of the world and character possibilities. Based on that last review linked, I don't think that's going to happen in ME2, which is a little disappointing, since the "action game" approach isn't as special to me. I chose an Infiltrator class (same as the snipe/tech from ME1), and all I really do is headshot guys from cover and cloak if there's trouble. Before I had all the tech, weapon, and spectre skills, plus anything brought over from a previous playthrough. Now (since even weapon heat management is gone), I just have a rifle that can run out of ammo.
It's a must-play game, but I'm not certain why excision of so much of the RPG element was on their fix-list.
Sounds amazing. Have to finish ME1 though. Fuck. I'm just being a lazy cunt about it. Hated a lot of the shit with inventory they stripped out of the game. The mission set up sounds a little too by-the-numbers but i'll give it a try. I think I'd prefer it to scouring a desolate planet for 5 minutes.
