If Team Silent isn't making it, I couldn't care less.

Might be worth a try.

The first one hasn't aged well graphically, but storywise and gameplay wise it has.

There's no reason for a Silent Hill remake to be on Wii. The series fan-base is far more likely to spend money on it on PS3/360. My guess is the PSP is the primary remake with the Wii thrown in as a freebie 2-fer.

I may buy it on Wii anyway. :(

Yeah. I was late to the party on it (well, like every console game from 93 to 01). It's unplayable. The new entry in the series did crappy on the real consoles, though, so I can understand not wanting to spend the $. BUT...yeah, old game remade on old hardware=sounds stupid

Silent Hill isn't unplayable at all. I was smacking dogs out of the air using the fire axe with no problem. In fact, at one point I broke the horror aspect entirely when I took out two leaping dogs with two consecutive swings of the fire axe, instantly switching... what's-his-name from regular joe into monster-crushing bad-ass. No question, the controls sucked at first, and I'd hate to see any game made today use them, but they didn't make the game unplayable.

The new game sucked because it was Silent Hill in name only. It was bland, uninspired, and not scary at all.

Well, to be fair, I'm sure it being in the hands of Team Silent would mean much at this point either.

I say put it on PS2, that way I can have a complete collection of SH games all on the same console. And as much as I adore the original SH, it really could use an update both control wise and graphically. It's still an awesome game, so it deserves to be improved in those areas that the PS1 just couldn't do for it back then.

I would love a Wii remake, throw in radio chatter via Wiimote speaker and a retuned flashlight/gun aiming with the IR. Unfortunately, that kind of care will not be taken, at least maybe they'll get the modeling right this time.

What's your opinion of SH5, 'doshi? I'm assuming not very high...

While I actually enjoyed Sh4 a lot more then most people here did, I really kind of consider the series to have ended with 3. Which is pretty depressing to me. I want more like 2/3... :(

Target currently has the 360 version on clearance for $29. Next price drop, if it's still there, I'm going to pick it up. One of the guys at work who is kind of a fan of SH said it starts out awesome but then kind of falls apart, but is still worth playing just to see what they did.

I liked Homecoming but it definitely wasn't like the other SH games. The combat's actually viable, which to some fans is downright heresy. I welcomed the better controls though.

Story-wise it's not that great. Takes more cues from the movie (uhg), although there are a few interesting parts here and there. Less psychological stress and more "gotcha" scares. Visually it's really cool to look at. I'd say most SH fans will hate it for changing the controls and/or the shifted emotional emphasis. As a game on its own merit, not bad.

The better combat engine was fine, even welcome, but it still wasn't that great. The problem with Homecoming is it didn't feel like a Silent Hill game at all, but rather as if someone had been given a one-hour primer on the superficial elements of the series and made a game based on that.

I'm really all for this.

Silent Hill 1 is by far the most random and moody of them all, and an update (done properly) would really help remind people why this game was different in the first place. It'd be nice to play this again without having to look at those horrid Playstation character models as well.

A few went to Sony and did the Siren series, scary in its own right but no Silent Hill. I think the only person left at Konami is Yamaoka.

Although they announced Homecoming in Japan, it still isn't out here, waiting to see if the upgrade it for the locals....

Some ambitious ideas but not excited, half expecting it to be a point and click adventure or other casual tuned shit.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was unveiled for Wii last week by Nintendo Power, but it seems it won't be exclusive to Nintendo systems. This "re-imagining" of the original Silent Hill will also be going to PS2 and PSP, and as today's press release details, all three versions will be out sometime in Autumn this year.

Gamers who played the original will have their memories slightly shattered upon picking up this new version -- characters won't be found in the same spots and new clues, dialogue and gameplay paths will serve to jumble things up.

Another major change is the new "psyche profile," which monitors the player's reactions. Based on these reactions, alterations are made to the game's "visual elements" and the protagonist's actions as he encounters other people and creatures. The psyche profile system sounds interesting, but a bit difficult to fully grasp without seeing in action. Perhaps future gameplay videos will provide better insight into this new feature.

I'm so tired of this shit though. The Wii's never gonna have new or interesting styles of play because it's so damn easy to make a PS2/Wii/PSP game and it covers a publisher's ass more (or so the theory is) to do so. It's happened with enough repetition over a long enough time that any ounce of optimism I could conjure would be wishful thinking.

Nintendo should have thought of that when they released 10 year-old hardware. It's bullshit that this game isn't on the real trifecta of the PC/360/PS3 instead of the geriatric ward.

It's bullshit that the only real asset a develop sees in the Wii is the affordability of development, or ease into a PS2/PSP port. I'm okay with older graphics as long as they're still fun to look at, or the game is just fun to play. I'm not okay with being sold on the Wii being another concept console like the DS and getting nothing outside of Wii Sports or Metroid Prime for proof of concept.

The only difference is that the DS doesn't have any other platform awful enough to share code with. Next to no good DS games use the system's "features", and the same is true of the Wii, nor should they. The real bullshit is that either system sold well enough to get any third party support.

Meh - I dpn't think there's anything wrong with sacrificing visuals if you give the consumer some sort of value trade off. For the DS, it was the touch controls and two screens. With the Wii it was supposed to be motion control, but look how that's been going. With both it was about affordability too.

Speaking from an industry standpoint, I don't know how much longer companies could be in a visual arms race before isolating so much userbase that only a small percentage can afford to and even care about such things as a no.1 selling point.

From a consumer standpoint, if I pay less for a lower graphic quality but am enjoying it just the same, where's the moral wrong, injustice, or lack of intelligence? I've just satisfied my want in the most prudent way possible.

In any event, this is still bullshit. Like when they trumpeted Techu as a Wii game - only to find out a few weeks later that it would be on the PSP. To me the Wii had an interesting new direction that since developers didn't give a shit for, ended up going nowhere. So now it's just extended PS2/GC development for another 5-6 years.

Touch controls and two screens are negative value add, and so is waggle bullshit. Nintendo is getting what they deserve, except for the inexplicable sales.

People have to understand that the teams most capable of taking advantages of a system's 'strengths' are not working on the Wii. And the Wii doesn't have strengths anyway, so it's a double whammy.

You are absolutely right in the 'visual arms race', but I don't think the Wii is the sweet spot. Highly capable teams can still make lots of money on the other platforms. Now, it is my opinion that many of the teams working on the 'expensive' systems have no business doing so in the way that they are currently (too many 8 figure budgets are handed out these days)...but there is still a lot of money to be made on them.

As a PS2 owner, I love the PSP/PS2/Wii games. But yeah, it's BS the way developers are treating the Wii.

Actually, it's the way they're treating consoles in general. If you decide upfront that the Wii is only for casuals and the 360 for FPS fans, you create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

At least with the last generation, they tried to put port games onto all the consoles; only after a couple years, when hardcore games weren't selling on the GC, did devs limit themselves to PS2/Xbox.

Yeah but those systems were on the same order of magnitude...so they're basically doing the same thing here

I'm not talking about the porting per se. Obviously, you can't make code a game for 360/PS3/Wii the way you could with PS2/Xbox/GC. I just think they should've done a better job of putting lots of quality games across genres on all the consoles the first couple of years. (And MS should have packed in Viva Pinata with all 360s.)

But that problem lies with Nintendo. Sony and MS have reached out to developers to make their systems' libraries what they are. MS went after shooters, racers and sports games to break into the business. And guess what? It's the console that people play most for those genres. Nintendo went for mini-game shits. And guess what? Pretty much any successful game in that genre is on the Wii

BTW, no combat.....at all. Harry can only run from enemies in the game and Climax added some moves ditched from Origins like blocking doors with furniture.

I think the nicest thing about the Wii is that games actually come out reasonably soon after they are announced. This is apparently 3Q, which is awesome.

I'll be surprised if this is Q3, unless things have changed recently. I wouldn't expect it until late '09 / early 2010.

Looks decent enough I guess, (I hope its the video quality and not low res almost low PS2 quality :( but thats Wii for ya), and it did have some decent atmosphere and item interaction is neat.

But, I really DO HATE no weapons approach. I don't want to be on the run lal of the fucking game. Some people might enjoy that, but I like to be given a chance to fight the enemy. Don't make character super skilled combat expert, make it harder to fight but don't take the option away at all. Thats just gay.

Tecmo is pretty slimy there but Nintendo's refusal to give up/sell the Western publishing rights to another company is almost as bad.

Nintendo was the publisher as it was. If that was such a big problem, they'd have fixed them before relasing it in its home territory.

Cursed Mountain has some potential and even though I hated Umbrella Chronicles, Darkside seems to benefit from it's backdrop and not being split into a half-dozen sub quests.

All the elements that make Silent Hill be Silent Hill are right there, in the original games and broken down endlessly online. Why are they so hard to understand? Creepy town turns into terrifying town, and the horror is an external manifestation of the main character's inner problems. It may not be easy to do but it's a pretty straightforward formula. You'd think they'd try and stick to it now and then.

Man I called this. I played the original Silent Hill and loved it. Now some retards are trying to recreate something they had no part in and as such, no clue on what makes those games great. Maybe they should work on making their own shit instead of trying to piggyback on the work of others.

Just found out about that myself....it really is too bad. Awful, in fact. I hope that Yamaoka will still contribute occasionally to IIDX, but Silent Hill is pretty dead at this point. I suppose I'm happy that I have 1-4, and that they are still highly playable as a whole. 4 less so, but whatever.

Well, 8.0 from Nintendo Power and 8.6 from IGN. Even putting aside my bitching about how a Silent Hill game is totally not Silent Hill, I'm not sure I'd rate it that high as a general survival horror title period.

But, obviously, I have no idea what I'm talking about, because people are saying "it's not scary at all but it's still an 8.6!" and calling it a grand time.

The game you described didn't sound all that fun, and when I see words like "Silent Hill" (or Dragon Quest, Serious Sam, Grand Theft Auto, etc) on a box I expect certain things. We've got a game that doesn't sound very interesting saddled with a title that doesn't represent it (or it doesn't represent, whichever). I'm thinking 8.x might be a bit of an overstatement. The only way to know for sure would be to play it, and I don't feel like doing that.

Exactly. This is why reviews should never be platform specific. Every game should be reviewed against every other game. Don't want your game to take a huge hit for graphics and network integration? Develop for a real platform.

I remember EGM reviewing Neo-Geo games and they'd lower the scores because the games cost more than the other consoles. I think other reviewers do the same kind of thing, taking value into consideration when reviewing. Should $60 PS360 games be scored against $50 Wii games?

Yes, they should. $50 vs $60 is not that big a gap, and no one pays MSRP unless they are retarded these days anyway.

This made me laugh out loud for the first time in awhile. Good stuff.

And Yoshi's response is spot on. When the game can be ported over to a 10 year old system and a handheld, there is something wrong.

Just got to the High school before heading off to work.

Enjoying it for the most part but there is a ton of wasted potential. The nightmare parts are different but not bad. Chase sequences are a refreshing change actually from resource management and slow combat. Unfortunately these sections are a bit simple, they could have run with the concept (no pun intended) but stuck with a single enemy variant and few interactive elements. Unfortunately this is a more annoying problem in the exploration parts.

Climax made a detailed immersive world but skimmed on the interactivity. The separation of the two worlds doesn't bother me at all, I enjoyed Silent Hill as much for the urban exploration as the horror. The problem is they could have crafted a puzzle/adventure title akin to Zack and Wiki with great results. Instead the puzzles thus far are way too streamlined. It's always:

-enter room.

-find the one interactive element.

-get key, exit room.

Not all that impressed with the use of the phone either but we'll see what the second half brings.

Just started playing this today. Only put in a few minutes but this shit is creepy from the start. I like the whole psychiatrist bit. I really like the flashlight controls and using that dumbass Wiimote speaker as a phone is putting the thing to good use for once. A scared little girl right in my ear is way more frightening and arousing.
