Question for you 1080p gamers

I know there's a thread around here about HD gaming, or at least I think there's one, but I obviously suck at searching because I can't find it.

Currently have a 32" 720p LCD HDTV, and thinking about maybe going a bit bigger (40" or 46"). As far as Xbox 360 and PS3, since a lot of games run at either 720p native or close to that, my 720p TV is a nice match. How are things when you step up to 1080p? Is it a noticeable difference, or between the scalers in the consoles and the TV, do things typically turn out okay?

I also have heard that some console games do run better when set to output 720p versus 1080p. If I were to get a 1080p set, should I run in 1080i instead of 1080p for gaming? Or am I going to be mostly okay just running straight 1080p?

I just naturally expect the Wii to look shitty no matter what kind of HDTV I'm running, so I'm not even bothered to be concerned as far as that goes. The bump up to 1080p would be nice for Blu-ray, but I'm a bit concerned on what the end effect on gaming might be.

1080p all the way. I've never noticed a game running worse in 1080p so go for it. Like anything some games look better than other. The few games that are 1080p native and not upscaled look steller! Blu Ray 1080p is also a MUST. A tv that also runs at 120hz is a thing to see, especially for the blu rays. It is ridiculous.

Long story short. 1080p KICKS ASS!

Your game is no worse for the wear when you play it in 1080p. Granted the difference between 720p and 1080p is far more subtle than 480 to 720, but it's still an improvement.

120hz is fucking ridiculous, my set doesn't have it, but fuck!

I do VGA with my 360 to 1080p (Only because when I do hdmi it does GROSS audio lag)
I do hdmi with my PS3 to 1080p for Blu-Rays and... it plays games right?

For Blu Ray it looks like they're in your fucking house. Hell Circuit City had Monsters Inc on regular def looking good in 120hz too.

Is it fair to say that going to 120hz on an LCD is far more significant than going from 720p to 1080p?

120hz interpolation just sounds... ugly to me. With games and not movies, at least. I think I'd turn it off if I had a 120hz set.

I know some people feel that "real movies" should be 24 fps, and anything better looks camcorder "amateurish," but I think that's fetishizing a failure. Like the way people thought "real acting" was stiff and exaggerated, but now realize that good acting is realistic.

I watch TV and play PS2 from about 10-15' away from my 42" 720p plasma. I've tried to see the difference between 720p and 1080p in stores from that distance and can't see it. But I wouldn't mind the removal of jutter.

Same. I've seen a demo TV in stores. It's kind of irritating.

Can you guys clarify: does 120hz improve video games or not?

My understanding is that the fps and hz are roughly equal. So 60hz refreshes 60 fps, no? If 120hz improves movies that run at 24 fps, it should also improve games running at 30 or 60 fps, no?

Bad assumption. I'd love to see more movies recorded at higher framerates and actually think it's a shame that they aren't.

My problem here is a computer making up frames that aren't there. What you're doing is like comparing a 240p game running in 2xSai to a full hi-def remake of the same game. If the source provided the info, I'm all for it, but I don't need my TV making up the picture on the fly.

Oh I don't know. I like it because it clears up blur in fast moving scenes a lot. "Most" of the time it looks amazing. Especially in those outdoor landscape sequences.

60hz does not always show 60 new images per second, but that's the max. Similarly, since modern consoles only output at 60hz, no matter what framerate the game reaches, the system only sends out 60 images max per second. Anything else is just assumed movement by the TV. And yeah, if it does it for movies, no reason it wouldn't for games.

I mean, there's no real reason to avoid a 120hz set, but I don't like the look of interpolation (from what I've seen at stores, similar to epmode), and I'd imagine it would weird me out in the long term, so I'd turn it off.

120hz can be hit or miss especially with layered effects (best example is reticle movement for FPS's, it creates a bizarre cloning effect) but it's amazing when used correctly. It's jarring at first but after a while you can't imagine watching some movies any differently again.

Actually now that I've had one since last summer I miss it so much when I'm at the girlfriends. Gave her my old Samsung and its only 720p. Looks like fucking ass now. But yeah your a dumbass not to buy a tv without 120hz. It can be turned off if your a nancy man.

For movies, maybe, but LCD has come a long way for black levels. Not that it matters as OLED is the future for TV's.

PDPs generally have low resolution and non-square pixels.
Unless you have a dark living room, I don't see the advantage of plasma.

I agree with this as well. I looked at a ton of LCDs and Plasmas before I made my purchase (got a Panasonic Plasma), and to my eyes, Plasmas just had a better and more natural (less harsh) looking picture. Plasma's take a little extra care over an LCD, but it's worth it imo, because there's a difference in quality.

I've heard that sometimes the Plasmas are too dark, and it's not something that can be easily adjusted.

I love my Bravia LCD 120 kHz. Bluray looks amazing with or without the motion enhance. But it's so nice to be rid of judder I usually go with at least the medium motion enhance setting.

The PS2 lags like a bitch with any processing going on, so no games with the 120 kHz bells n' whistles enabled.

Although I went cheap and got a Vizio, I very nearly paid 50% more for the Vierra. I saw more of a leap from most plasmas to the Panasonic than I did between 720p plasmas and the 1080ps. Gorgeous colors on that set.

Is anti-judder technology available in any DVD or Bluray players?

You're only 3 or 4 years behind with this comment. All 1080p plasmas are full res with square pixels. I think most if not all the 720p plasmas made today are also the full res.

I've also never seen motion interpolation on the 120hz sets that didn't introduce artifacts.
