My Mother Passed Away

As some of you know through either PMs, IMs, and/or a few posts, my mother's been battling stage IV breast cancer since October. Well, today, her battle came to a peaceful end. After 8 days in a coma, she took her last breath at 8:04 AM. She felt no pain, and went while listening to Led Zeppelin, so it was about as perfect as I could have hoped.

Sorry to hear it, but it's good to hear she didn't go on living in a coma for a prolonged period of time. That's not your mom in that state anymore. Rest in peace.

Nope, but I plan to once I've gotten all the financial stuff handled. Thanks for the condolences, guys. I've had an incredible support group over the past few months - from American Legion folks, to old friends, to even some of her co-workers at ABC. It's been a tough time emotionally, but also one that has made me a much stronger person.

It was very hard to see her health deteriorate, and I've gotta say that I never really appreciated being able to do something as simple as walk or speak until she got to the point where she couldn't do that herself and I saw first-hand the effect it had on one's life.

The good thing about the coma is that she wasn't in any pain during it. It was far better than the alternative - her being in a severely mentally-altered state saying things that were quite scary, like hearing her ask for "Sinatra!!" for breakfast and state that it made sense to her. Fortunately, those kinds of problems (which I wrote down as they happened) were able to give our primary care physician the info he needed to get Hospice care started for her.

Fuck, that's horrible and depressing. I'm sorry for your loss, Jeremy, and everything it took to get there. :(

It has been said a few times already but, to hammer the point home, she raised an incredibly nice guy. While none of us here knew her, that's a strong indication of the person she is and the world is always poorer when someone like that leaves it.

It's terrible when you lose someone close to you for any reason but at least she isn't suffering anymore. My thoughts are with you.

Ugh...wow....that sucks, hardcore.

I know what you must be going through right now. My grandfather was ill and terminal for a long time before he went. We all knew it was coming, but it didn't make the news that he's passed any easier to deal with. What some of us didn't expect was that my grandmother would follow him less than 6 months later.

In retrospect though it makes sense, they were married for something like 60 years.

All you can do at this point is take it day by day and let the grieving come naturally.

I could not possibly make a statement that could bring any sort of relief or easement of the distress you must be going through. I still do not understand why vastly better circumstances befell others who are so vicious in nature, while dilemmas and anguish plague such sincerely good people like you. Ultimately, and truthfully, I don't know the words that I would use to describe my feelings had this happened to me. So knowing this, I wish you good luck Jeremy. I hope better circumstances find you.

I lost my mom a couple of years ago, it's a tough gig, kid. Just remember to keep your head up and to remember her in good light.

Jeremy, I just saw this today and wanted to give you my most sincere condolences. :cry:

Thanks for the condolences and support offers, folks. I've been very fortunate to have a strong support group of family and friends both new and old during her last cancer battle. In her first one in '04, it was basically just her and I, and it was absolutely terrifying. This one was as well, but a little less so because she didn't fear death this time around, and I was able to grow enough as a person to help put her mind at ease so that if she did go due to it, she knew things would be okay.

Her memorial service was Saturday, and was wonderful. A handful of her former ABC News co-workers came, as did her father, half-brother Jimmy, uncle Harry, and brother Ernie, who didn't get to see her before she passed away, and was shocked upon hearing of her passing as he'd expected to hear that his father died - not his younger sister.

I gave a speech about her and mentioned how proud she was of me when I got my head shaved in a show of solidarity alongside her, and broke down at the end of it, and to my surprise, Harry said some words about her towards the end of the ceremony, and got some laughs with one of his stories, and also broke down. For the first time all week, Ernie, who was staying with me most of the week, cried and tried to speak but couldn't. It was an emotionally-draining ceremony, but very empowering as well.
