sometimes they are
a good indicator is if the gem is grey or black, grey means it's not at the same height that you're at, so you'll either have to drop down (or climb up) to find it, and sometimes treasure will be in a room protected by guards, not unlike codex pages
There are a couple treasures underneath the villa that are accessed from going in a well outside the villa wall
I have two of the assassins tomb markers but I can't remember where to take them. I thought it was in the area Mario shows you in the villa but I don't think that's right.
So I bought the game and couldn't stop playing. I played for about 25 hours straight until I beat it (with everything except the feathers, which I just did tonight). Fucking fantastic. I am a little disappointed with part of the secret in the vault, but I think the "Too bad you're still on your own!" helps counteract that somewhat. Choosing divine benevolence over evil alien overlords is a plus in my book, I was scared they were going to pick the latter.
Sometimes Ezio doesn't jump exactly where I want him to, which is about the only negative I have for this game. Waiting for the third part is going to be so hard (and then so sad that it's over).
Also: AN AWESOME AND FUN ESCORT MISSION OCCURS. FOR QUITE POSSIBLY THE FIRST TIME IN VIDEOGAME HISTORY. A game with good stealth and a good escort mission; everyone pay attention as such a landmark occurrence will likely never happen again in our lifetime.
I played a bit of the first, and know the story. Can I pick this up and be good? Or should I trudge through the borefest?
No need to pay the first (although I actually liked the first one well enough). AC 2 starts with some recap (but no scan lines) and you'll be good to go.
If you're dying to delve into the plot from AC1, just read the Wiki and get on with playing AC 2.
I actually yelled out loud when I stabbed 2 guards at the same time through their mouth with the hidden blade. I thought I was screwed when they approached me, but that little trick let me drop them in a second so I could run around a pillar and pounce on the last guard who came to investigate.
Some of the counter kills are viscious and pulling people off rooftops never gets old. The Assassin Tombs are the shit too, it's like playing through the best parts of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
I agree, this game has far exceeded my expectations in all areas. Some of the more simple side quests are very well thought out. The assassins tombs are epic.
