Assassin's Creed 2

The best place to attract guards is by the restricted building in south-east Venice. There are generally two roving patrols and around a dozen guards in stationary positions. Just deck one upside the head and do a loop around the building and you'll have more than enough guards.

Just be careful with the sweeper achievement. It seems to want you to sweep EXACTLY five guards, which can be a problem if you're attracted a horde. Try getting their numbers down to five and then herd them into a nice confined area.

As for killing ten guards, try using smoke bombs and then just shanking them all with the hidden blade.

Finally knocked those both out, giving me what I think is my first 1000/1000 game. Smoke bombs were a nice trick, thanks.

I'm up to the 9th glyph and have no idea what the solution is. It has 3 numbers that you can change and a dial to the right of it that has the numbers 0-9 around it on 2 rings, one of which you can move. It's gone from straight forward search/rearrange puzzles to whatever the hell this thing is.

Somewhere on the screen (maybe kinda hidden) should be a X=Y formula; match the numbers on the ring and then line up the three numbers with their counterparts. i.e. If it says 4=5 then match up 4 with 5 on the two rings. Then 4 goes with 5, 8 goes with 9, etc.

So is this fucking goty or what?

Looks like they fixed every issue I had with the first game. Holy shit is this good.

I think someone is getting me this for Christmas. But I want to buy it now and not wait. Fucking Christmas.

I'm still trying to hold out for the PC version. :(

I'm missing 3 glyphs, now I gotta wander around like an asshole to find them. Only found half of the feathers too and I'm on Session 9.

You can go into the database and check which buildings still have glyphs that need to be found. Of course, then you have to remember where that building is...

Could be worse, I love running around.

Yeah, definitely not enough discussion here about this game. Most improved sequel right here. No more boring do the same 5 shit quests until you puke in every section of the city garbage here.

My only complaint: the first three assassinations have been utterly and completely lacking when compared to the last game. Granted, I wasn't even an assassin for the first one, but they need to shape up and fast. There was no intel, no maps, no infiltration, no stalking. Two were climb this and stab, one was a melee brawl. No no no no no those were the BEST PARTS of the first game =[

I'm more into playing the game than talking about it still.

I loved this game. It would have been GOTY if not for Dragon Age.

I hear that the first three assassinations are being revamped for the PC version, hence the delay.

The PC version of the first was considerably improved on PC and worth the wait, so I'm banking on this one being similar. Otherwise I wouldn't bother waiting around.

I liked Dragon Age, but it was too much like KOTOR and ME for me. In fact, it was JUST like those two games. AC2 is a major step up from the first game, and that's why I give it the nod. Bioware really needs to upgrade its action/RPG formula to offer something different or move on to something else entirely. Then again, I know I'll buy ME2 and play through it 2 or 3 times, even though it's exactly the same type of game.

Apparently there will be DLC in both January and February for this. So now we know one way the PC version will be better. All of that will be free.

They are. It's called The Old Republic, and it's ok with me if it's the last game they ever make if they get it right.

Jade Empire had a complete melee based battle system, too.

Solved the last glyph. I'm glad I didn't resort to any cheats...it was fun figuring them out (although one of them had me close to throwing a fit). The overall production of this game is fantastic.

What exactly makes you think the PC DLC will be free?

I don't think it'll even be DLC. I think it'll be on the disc. Paid DLC on PC doesn't fly, and Ubi is likely smart enough to throw a bone for delaying the game a retarded amount.

I really took my time with this...end of game clocked in at 38 hours and change, having done just about every side quest and all of the collections. The lead-in to the final battle was great, and the conclusion was satisfying, even with the cliffhanger ending (which I assume most people saw coming, after a fashion anyway). Fantastic game. DLC needed right now.

I think I finished it at around 30 hours. 55 feathers, around 50 treasures left to find and most of the side quests done.

I'm really happy with the changes they made for 2 and I expect even more for 3. I was right, AC was the foundation for a much better game and 2 is it. The story was great, the climbing and movement is tops, it looks gorgeous and combat is fun (love the animation and weapon variety). I loved the Assassin Tombs, those were a great change of pace that also gave the bonus of new environments to run around. Really good idea making the economy tied into the collectibles.

They need to up the stealth though, there's very little danger in just rushing in blades swinging. Guards are way too brain dead letting you get away with murder. They barely notice anything. Only certain missions would fail you for being detected and it's weird to be a stealth based character that can't crouch. It's rare to feel actually threatened, I took the most damage when I would take a bad jump and almost plummet to my death. Hardest thing in the game were some of the Glyph puzzles than went from simple "click on a picture" to crazy code/pattern deciphering.

I'm totally down to play another one, I want to see where they go with this.

That's a good point about the lack of stealth. I went into most missions trying to be stealthy -- for no reason. There's no bonus for doing so (expect when lack of detection is required), and I finally got used to the fact the game doesn't expect it of you. Too bad because stealth kills are more challenging and satisfying. Alas, the guards are simply fodder...kill as many as you like and look good doing it. Still pretty damned fun.

I don't think it does, and lack of difficulty is a fairly reasonable thing to be angry about.

The problem I'm having with the game is the chasing. I'll often times be hitting X to kill a pick-pocket or guard fleeing only for it to do nothing and the guard get away. I also noticed in close quarters, such as the catacombs and tombs sections of the game, that the camera constantly tilts to the left and the right when it hits the walls in the tight corridors, making it frustrating at times to maneuver Ezio across multiple planks and obstacles.

So far I've been having a lot of fun with this game. But I absolutely abhor the chase levels.

This game started strong, and I put like five hours or something into it, but so many other games have taken priority. It feels like it's less boring than the original mostly (not entirely) because they jammed it full of cutscenes.

It's better, definitely, but I wouldn't call it incredible or anything.

This happened to me. I like what I'm playing but I got some other stuff and have been playing it instead. I should just go knock it out.

I am sticking to this game only before going to Uncharted 2.

Why so many lookout points per city? Just make it like 3 or something. It feels a bit pointless to have a player do the same thing 10 times per city when it takes so much time to climb a tower, synchronize, and then do it again. You can only climb so many towers before it becomes common and not enthralling anymore.

I love the improved combat in this game. I use a big hammer almost exclusively. I have a bit of trouble dodging, though. My timing sucks.

The cities are pretty big and it opens up the maps when you sync a lookout.

And it is nothing compared to the tedium of lookouts in the first game.

Yeah I don't think they should be removed. Just reduced. But now that I'm in Venice they don't seem to be as prominent. Florence had like 10. It just becomes tedium after the 4th or 5th. This game is outstanding. It may not be that hard, but it's definitely fun. I like the approach this game takes, like Arkum Asylum. You really FEEL like a bad ass assassin who can take on 10 guys at a time. Exploring the city is a great experience and the Assassin's seal catacomb platforming sessions are fun. It's a great mix between action and platforming that I'm enjoying. My favorite game this year.

IMO, it's not just a simple lack of difficulty but a complete lack of gameplay / substance. It is all flash and presentation. The game is intensely dull.

You are wrong, good sir! The thing about sandbox games is that they play as smart as you are. In the case of Assassin's Creed II, that involves observing your surroundings and reacting quickly to changing situations in order to keep yourself concealed. I do agree with NeoZeedeater that the game could really benefit from higher difficulty and some actual consequences for screwing up and letting yourself be revealed, but it's still just as entertaining as long as you really just try to be a proper assassin. The game's great fault is that it does let you be a total dimwit and just run around killing everyone in plain sight, though I'd say that speaks more about your own style of play than anything else.

They should just put a difficulty slider in for people who want more of a challenge in combat. They added a good variety of guards in and combat elements from the last game to this game. If they keep going with that for AC3 I'll be happy as hell. Actually looking at the Splinter Cell Conviction trailer I see a lot of similarities between that game and this engine. So I guess if they're going modern-secret wars style for the story we won't even get much swordplay.

John finally finished it off so I now get to steal it back and get through Venice. It's pretty weird that they teach you a new climbing technique at this point, I like to finish off the lookouts and whatnot before thestory segments and I couldn't =[

What the game needs is a rock-paper-scissor element to the counter system, rather than just one-counter-fits-all (with the occasional need to dodge instead of counter, but that doesn't matter either because the enemies that require that don't mix it up, they just ALWAYS require a dodge). That alone would make the combat much more exciting and meaningful.

I just started on this yesterday. I love the atmosphere so far, it's really drawing me in. On the minus side the rooftops seem a bit boring so far, maybe I saw enough of them in the first game. I like the cut scenes, but it seems like the game might be getting a bit heavy on the busywork. Pulling down posters is dumb.

That guy John (Sean?) is a dick. When I get out of the animus I hope the game lets me punch him in the balls.

I was trying to figure this out for 20 minutes before Jonas told me I probably just needed to learn a new skill. Gaaay. I'm at the masquerade segment right after the dude in the yellow was poisoned in his impenetrable fortress. I love the world and story. I like the assassinations. I like pushing people over who are carrying heavy crates and laughing. I also love the platforming sections to get the crests in the assassin catacombs and burial chambers. One thing I don't like his how the targets you need to kill who are stuck in a compound just run around the compound until you kill them. They should be able to get away.

The massive amounts of easter egg hunts is kinda gay.

Unless you care about achievements, every hunt is worthless. I think you unlock a weapon at 50 feathers, though.

You can check your locations database and see what buildings still have glyphs, but just check online to find their exact location once you know their name. As for the feathers, they're usually up high and in plain sight. There are no maps for it, but they're mostly worthless.

You can buy treasure maps at paint stores. Treasures are especially worthless.

The glyph buildings are marked in the database but I don't know if you can tell which ones you found from there. I looked through the market building for that damn glyph forever, couldn't find it.

in the menu there is a way to see which buildings have glyphs, but not where they are on the building, and you have to have gotten the "Access Data Bank" prompt while walking past the building in order to get it.

Feathers are what Youtube is for, and there is no reason to go looking for the treasures if it's a PS3 platinum trophy you are seeking. I can't speak for the 360 version, though they are usually the same.

I think that one is on a building off to the side of the main market. Some of them are in really dumb locations; save yourself some sanity and just look them up online when you find a building that's marked as soon as you see it. Trying to remember where they are is a pain.

Funny you mentioned this. My bro had been playing this and the first I ever saw of the game he was trying to get the one lookout that requires the skill. He sat there getting pretty pissed of and I mentioned "maybe you need to advance the story and get a skill?" without having ever seen the game. How do you change armor that you already purchased? I bought some crappy armor and want to change it back but I cant figure out how.

I've had this game for about a month and only played 2 hours or so.

The PC port of the first was not good. I had persistent audio glitches, and the UI was simply not designed for a computer game. Be cautious.

Still better than the console version (with a 360 pad). It's a great looking game, if nothing else. I don't have audio glitches either.

Started playing this again after being distracted by god knows what way back in January. Coming back was a little disorienting but after running around a bit and catching up on feathers in the old cities while I relearned the game I'm finding this to be a really, really well made and fun game. Definitely seems close to impossible to die, and even if you do because of a twitchy-control jump it barely even matters. It's weird how a game can still be fun even when there is no challenge to it at all. I like pretty much everything about it. Except one thing:

Whoever was in charge of the stupid glyph puzzles needs to die, they're just so stupid sometimes.

Pfft. Man, I didn't have too much of a problem with most of them. I love the puzzles delving more into the crazy, conspiracy theory bullshit than the first game ever did. Gotta say though, I HATED the first game, but this is at least 40 metric Spanglishes better than the first. Gameplay beyond "sit on bench, press Y" is welcome. The fact that the characters have personalities this time helps quite a bit, too. Shame the sucky first game kept me from it for so long!

So anyway, yeah just played this in the last 48 hours. Managed to do it with an hour to spare before I have to be at work! word! A short nap is in order.

Basically, it's way better than game 1. Much less mucking about in fields, almost the whole thing takes place in cities. The Assassin's Tombs are easily the best parts of the game, especially since they do throw more than just crazy platforming at you in them. I kept waiting for Ezio to say "Ah, Venice" when he popped out of one of the sewers.

The story arc was what I expected out of game 1. It's soooo long and drawn out because of trilogy status. If they had compressed this shit down to one game, made it 30 hours, and had a resolution as Desmond in the present it'd probably be way up there on my games list, but no, we've got to sit through three of these motherfuckers.

I can't remember much of why this game is better than 1 besides the lack of countryside. The building your villa up is pretty incidental, as is getting money, as is hunting for treasure, and climbing the same carbon copy building 10 times to get a viewpoint gets boring by the end. There are like 5-10 super unique structures that are mad fun to climb, and challenging, and the rest are like 6 cookie cutter buildings. I liked the setpieces in 1 better, I think, at the assassin hideout.

Combat seems almost exactly the same. Different weapons within the subtypes all feel almost exactly the same. I wish I could buy a spear. Those kills are fucking great. I spent most of the game running around unarmed. Very hard to die. If this game married Batman's combat system it'd be so much fucking radder. Chase missions are fun, should have had more of those. The assassinations are all pretty fun and the game scales pretty well and gives you a decent amount of variety/new shit to keep you entertained through the story.

I think...I dunno if it's kind of lame that there's very little outside the story, or a good thing. It almost feels like a free-running GTA except there's nothing interesting to do outside of the main missions really. The side missions are still pretty repetitive and you don't get much out of it. Like I said earlier, the best shit going is the Assassin's Tombs, and the armor you get from completing that is pretty worth it, least of all because you finally look like a badass in it.

Annoyed that I have to wait til part 3 to finish Desmond's story.

I think a slightly different implementation would have really propelled this game into the upper echelons. Imagine if you had all the conspirators and then had to track them down not via cutscenes but by side missions/snooping and you could decide who to go after first. It could even change event paths, as long as they all came together in the end. Like, take a little bit of Crackdown, or a little bit of GTA's concurrent storylines, and mix that in. Right now this game is so Batman:AA, and Batman did it better imo, despite how much fun the freerunning is.

In fact even the freerunning around the world gets boring. By the end, I guess because I was hurrying, I was just running along all the roads to get everywhere. Climbing buildings often wastes time unless one of the designed-in routes happens to be going your way, and there's no reason to not be on the street since it's stupid easy to keep your notoriety down all the damn time. AND, there are ARCHERS on the rooftops, all the time, so the streets are just fucking safer. Unless you enjoy doing low-profile kills every twenty steps. Or you can do high-profile kills, but then you've gotta tear down a poster or two eventually. Annoying.

What the game needs is Batman's combo-string combat system. It would make battles less tedious by making them end faster, up the challenge without upping the difficulty by testing you to string together long combos, and it would look super fucking badass.

As it stands now you can take the nice dagger and combo away at one enemy until his health is low enough that you trigger a nice kill animation, but it takes foreeever on guys with higher life. The dagger will take you away from the other enemies too because it's so fast. It becomes a boring chip-fest. The most fun is really going at everyone unarmed, you seem to be able to counter more guards that way and end the fights way faster.

It's just frustrating and boring when guards counter your counters. It needs some batman style shit. When you get guards that can block, you've got to do a leap over and attack from the rear to keep the string going. Shit like that would just work wonders here.

Batman is an awesome game holy shit.

Escort missions aren't terrible when your "escort" won't die while you're enjoying yourself. Or when your "escort" kicks almost as much ass as you do.

The injured leg boat one. If I recall it will sink fairly easily if you let archers get shots off, but intercepting them was great.

Just got to the injured leg escort mission and it was a lot of fun hopping around murdering fools while the boat got away. Been messing around in Venice, want to knock this game out as my last game completed in the year.

Anybody else get Brotherhood? It's $34.99 at Amazon and Best Buy and I spent a few hours on the multiplayer last night.

Yeah, I snagged Brotherhood at BB the other day at that price. It's my first AC, not really digging this future body-snatching fooferah, but the Rome portion is great.

MP is interesting, very unique. Casually walking right up on your target in a group of NPCs and then going surprise bitch shiv in yo stomach is pretty fantastic.

I really love that you can't go just murdering everybody. I was playing alliance with a friend last night, he was the bait while I was the lookout for our persuer and the murderer of our target. It's great fun. I'd love to get a group of 4 for manhunt.

I haven't tried multi yet. lmk when you want to go on the hunt and I'll show up.

Decided I needed to take a break from RPGs and thought I'd give this series another try. I've only put in a few hours but I like it. Wish there was more control over the parkour though. I've died a couple of times because I meant to do this but the game made me do that. But since the only punishment for death is a 15 second reload, whatevs.

I am still burnout from AC1. It is my OCD to collect all the stupid flags. Never again.

AC 2 has a decent claim to being the best in the series (although I liked AC4 an awful lot). A huge improvement over 1, and still the best story line and presentation in the series. I thought the glyphs/puzzles were really well presented and gave a cool backdrop to the story development...I was disappointed that they didn't find their way into the subsequent iterations. Yes, the parkour is pretty damned janky...this is AC after all.

I think Brotherhood and 4 are the best. Shame any kind of story spiraled into outer space.

4 was a great game. They really should make another one of those someday.

This man speaks the truth. As good as 2 is, Brotherhood tells a better story and finally turns you loose in Rome. 4 is definitely the high point of the series for me, batshit "real world" bits and all.

I do wish the actual assassinations in later games played out more like those in the first. As boring as everything else was, stalking your prey and choosing the best possible place and moment to strike was pretty exhilarating.

2 and Unity (post patches) are the best in the series for me. I couldn't stand all the sailing in IV, it felt like a chore to do shit. Unity has some really great assassination moments, while not as open ended as say 1, it was much closer to that than any of the last few installments.

I haven't played 3 or Unity yet. I think 3 gets pooped on the most now.

The sailing was TERRIBLE in ACIII, though. Janky and tedious. Anti-fun. That was the only game on the series that I just ran through and skipped most of the extra stuff. It had to end.

I'm surprised the improved sailing in IV didn't grab ya. It's even better if you just forget you're an assassin and treat it like a pirate game!

It was slow, and boring game play. Plus doing one of AC's classic tailing missions in a giant boat was stupid. I don't want a Pirate game out of an ASSASSIN'S Creed game, I want to play as an assassin. So it just didn't mesh with me. At least with III you could skip most of the sailing, in IV it was just this giant aspect of it. For the record I liked 3, but I liked the setting and the characters of it.

I personally think Unity gets a lot of shit because of the state it shipped out in, and I think a lot of people didn't give it a chance once it was patched. I'm not saying don't give Ubisoft shit for the horrible state it shipped in, because they deserve it, but the game deserves people giving it a chance now that its patched. Really it's the most assassiny game in the series in awhile. I loved the side missions and that I had way more options for the assassinations than past games. Co-op was fun too, something to be said when you have 4 assassin's doing air assassinations all at once.

Alright, "It's a me...MARIO!" made me lol.

I liked that boat tailing mission. You're on foot for most of it following the guys on the row boat and then around the compound.

Know what I hate? The races. Nothing better exemplifies how broken the parkour is like these fricking races.
