How Much Gaming Experience Do You Have?

A while back someone on another board mentioned the idea of a test to measure if someone is a hardcore gamer. While I think the concept is kind of elitist and impossible to measure anyway, I did end up making a "gaming experience" test out of boredom. I decided not to post it at the time but now I figure, what the hell, maybe it will be somewhat amusing for those wanting to add this shit up, and maybe it can generate some debate.

It's not meant to be taken too seriously, and it's obviously biased by what I consider important games, but I tried to cover almost every genre and era (well, not so much the last half decade as there hasn't been as much time for most of us to catch up).


Maximum points for entire test = 200
Having played emulated versions of games is acceptable.

For the first part I kept the ones I hadn't played, for the others I kept the ones I did.

Oh yeah, I'm assuming the Klaymen franchise includes Boombots, because no one played the stupid hockey game.

FPS and TBS/RTS are my two most-played genres. I've played far too many MoH games.

Yeah, I'm seeing many balance flaws now. FPS is my favourite 3d genre, BTW, so it's nothing personal against the genre. Besides the RPG mixes, you could argue Terra Nova, Metroid (Prime), and Maze War are FPS. *edit - (Half-Life's in there, too.) I didn't mean to put less than 10 strategy games in there but it looks like I did. Peter Molyneux got screwed in all my cutting and pasting but it wasn't on purpose.

I'm tempted to cheat in a few areas like with the handhelds: I've never played the Epoch, but I do have one of their game & watch type games from 1982, the Epoch Pocket Digit-Com Mini - Mr. Wood Man, so that should count for something. ...and I'd swear that I remember holding a Milton Bradley Microvision back in the early 80's, but I can't for sure confirm playing one.
...but I did leave those points off.

And while I haven't played 3 games from the Prince of Persia series, I have played the original on Apple IIe, SegaCD, and TG-CD (and I beat Jordon Mechner's Karateka on Apple IIe with the keyboard, so that should give me bonus points!)

Overall, I'm surprised by how many of these I actually did get poiints for, and how few I was completely unfamiliar with. It also brought back a few old memories (like the MB Microvision), and some new ones like how Zenji rang a bell but but didn't form a picture in my head - found the youtube video and realized I just played this for the first time back in the autumn when I had a 5200 and multicart hooked-up. ...catchy music, and pretty decent gameplay, reminded me of Nichibutsu's Frisky Tom.

Yeah I agree. I just needed to play an Odyssey 2 for that one.

Anyway I got 65. The 3 game stipulation fucked me in the first section. Alot of those games like say the Tomb Raider series, I played the first one and didn't like it so I never tried any of the others.

I got 60. I think that being in a PAL territory may have hindered my score for some of that, eg the TG-16 was never released in Australia. I'm not sure about the games though.

The Turbo's well worth checking out on emulators (and I assume on Virtual Console although those have ugly filters). Also, playing the original Dracula X in Chronicles on PSP would count as having played the system in some way.

Do I get anything for playing Sewer Shark? Or FoxHunt?

I really regret letting go of the Odyssey2 and all the games in a yard sale years ago. As a kid I never thought I'd miss it. Granted, I need less shit cluttering up my life, but I'd definitely like to play one again outside of emulation.

This whole list struck me as way too western-focused. There is an awful lot of complete garbage from the west given equal weighting with great Japanese games. This is especially true pre-1990 or so. And then after that time, the western lists go to hell. Someone already pointed out the lack of FPS, for instance.

Then again, this could be bias, since I think you can pick a year somewhere in the last 15 years to draw a line where western games essentially sucked balls before it, and Japanese games essentially sucked balls after it. Of course there are exceptions, but it holds up pretty damn well.

I admit I screwed up on some genre representation but I call bullshit on there being an awful lot of complete garbage from the West. Examples please. I did include some shitty games like Night Trap and games that haven't aged well like Skool Daze but I felt they were significant. This isn't meant to be a "best of" list. It includes a lot of my favourites but I also left out a lot, and there are games I don't like included.

Has anyone actually played the Epoch Game Pocket Computer? I've seen/held one, but I don't know anyone who played it.

Never even seen one.

It's on my list of "gaming things to play one day" but I have never seen one outside of pictures.

I have one right next to my halcyon.

Addressing some balance and omission issues from people's replies and glancing at the lists again -

- Yes, I was a little cruel with Section 1 requiring 3 games played. For games with mostly similar sequels like Tomb Raider, I should have put them in Section 2 instead. Putting most of them in Section 2 would probably have been better.

- The first part of Section 4 was meant to be brutal for some/rewarding for others by requiring having played all those systems but I agree that it counts for too many points. I was afraid of the games list sections being way too big but, even as is, it resulted in a lot of stuff left out.

- I would have liked a few more sports games, traditional first-person shooters, strategy games (including SRPGs), puzzle games, Zelda-ish action-adventures, maze chase games, vehicular combat and other atypical driving games, and simulation games.

- Having only one rhythm game included was a mistake as was not including any Dragon's Lair-type games or roguelikes.

- I'm not quite happy with early Atari's representation here.

- My mind skipped over some stuff I rarely touch like Wright's Sims games, flight sims and MMORPGs. They should have been in there somewhere. I think it's important to give them a try at least.

- There are some systems that didn't much or any game representation. Some I listed the system itself (Intellivision, Jaguar, 3DO) but I didn't want to ignore some systems entirely (Astrocade, Epoch SCV, Odyssey1, etc.).

- I left out movie franchises because of space but there are some important games for Star Wars, TRON, Alien, Indy etc..

- I was afraid of overrepresenting Sega because they have so many different classic franchises so some big ones from them got cut. I didn't want to go the opposite route and underrepresent them either so I tried to balance it.

- There are some significant early sandbox games not included.

- I originally had a section called "Playing with Your Balls" that had stuff like Marble Madness, Wizball, Monkey Ball and others. Themed sections proved to be too messy but some games got forgotten when I abandoned the idea.

- Treasure ideally would have had more than just Gunstar included.

- I ditched Diablo for the more obscure Divine Divinity because I want more people to play it. I was going to include Bioware but for space reasons I figured there was enough '90s Western RPG representation.

- I expected there not to be a huge number of fighting games as its a genre that tends to be focused on a smaller number of important franchises but it's still missing a few important ones.

- Even for genres that got covered a lot (shooters, platformers, adventure games, RPGs), it sucks how many awesome games didn't get put in. I didn't think anyone would want to do a several hundred game/series list. And like I said before, I avoided a lot of more recent significant games because people have had less time to catch up with them. I'm a huge fan of modern gaming so it's nothing against the quality.


So yeah, it's far from perfect. I don't think I balanced it properly from a genre perspective but I'm finding it interesting. Some of TNL's most experienced gamers like bVork and Frogacuda scored really high on it.

If anyone has issue with any games I did include, say why as I'm curious to know. And I'll explain why I included them.

I like Divine Divinity. One of the better $10 games I bought from Target. Wasn't even upset when it hit clearance a few weeks later and could have got it for $2.48.

From all replies so far, I am the third lowest with a score of 58.

Both Marble Madness and Q-bert seemed conspicuously absent when I read through the list the first time.
I'm not inspired to justify Q-Bert at the moment, but Marble Madness type games or maybe just some dedicated trac-ball games should be part of the survey.

Yeah, I can't argue against Q*bert for awesomeness, uniqueness and significance.

I scored 136, with my best section being in the first. The obscure titles like Doshin the Giant would be pretty hardcore, unless you found a way to play an emulated version of that game.

Garbage was too strong a word, but I don't believe pre-1990 western games have any business making up 50% of anything. However, one of your later posts mentioned that your intent wasn't to make the quality levels equal across regions, genres, etc., so that cleared that up.

A good example of my original point is Hard Drivin' being put on the same level as Devil Crush and Alien Crush combined. Devil Crush may be the best video pinball game out there, and Hard Drivin' wasn't even fun in the arcade.

This isn't true. Both the Hard Drivin' and Crush series' were in the "if you played at least one of them, you get a point" section. And while I would play Devil's Crush over Hard Drivin' any day, it's hard to argue against Hard Drivin' being an important game for 3d stunt/driving games.

I won't argue much of this, but I don't buy the logic that you have to play every game to tell if they are good or bad. There are games I will never play, because I don't have a shred of doubt about their lack of quality. There's a gray area where you have to give the game a chance to push them onto the good or bad side, but I'd say something like 50% of the games released can be categorized in about 5 minutes by reading about them or watching a video.

Hmm, I would like to but I don't know which ones you have and haven't played for the most part. The easiest to access might be DOS/Windows PC games (like LucasArts adventures, Planescape: Torment), or cheap Activision compilation stuff (like HERO and Pressure Cooker), and you have probably played console ports of Amiga games (like Lemmings and Out of this World). I think some "console crash era" C64/Atari 800 stuff (like Archon, Bruce Lee, Space taxi) has aged well but you probably still don't use emulators. Emulation really is the best way to quickly try stuff and see if you want to buy the real things.

I *love* that you mentioned Space Taxi. Such a rad game.

Which reminds me. I should replay Beamrider. It's easily one of the best C64 games, yet no one seems to talk about it.

Honestly, dude, this is bullshit. If you look at screenshots of Mercenary and Battlezone you'd think they were clones, and yet Mercenary is a large, open-eneded action-adventure and Battlezone is an arcade shooter. If you saw Starglider and Star Fox you'd think they played the same, but again, one is the really broad, free-roaming game with adventure elements that (in my opinion) is much better than Star Fox (which hasn't aged well).

Looks can be very deceiving. Looking like shit and playing like shit are two very different things.

The easiest to access might be DOS/Windows PC games (like LucasArts adventures, Planescape: Torment), or cheap Activision compilation stuff (like HERO and Pressure Cooker), and you have probably played console ports of Amiga games (like Lemmings and Out of this World). I think some "console crash era" C64/Atari 800 stuff (like Archon, Bruce Lee, Space taxi) has aged well but you probably still don't use emulators. Emulation really is the best way to quickly try stuff and see if you want to buy the real things.

Now that I think about it, I gave you no help.

I like LucasArts adventure games, though I haven't played them all. bbobb is going to kill me, but I have not played Planescape: Torment. That seems like a reasonable place to start, though I hate that kind of commitment. I love Lemmings but am not a big fan of the Prince of Persia style, so Flashback and Out of this World never did it for me. I've never played any of the C64/Atari 800 stuff you mentioned.

Torment's not a huge time commitment by RPG standards unless you plan on doing every sidequest.

I have played some but not all the Monkey Island games, no Sam and Max, and Maniac Mansion but not Day of the Tentacle. :sweat:

edit: You have to remember that I had an Atari 2600 in ballpark 1981, an Apple IIGS in ballpark 1986, and then no western platform of any kind (except the Lynx <3) until my PC in 1994. I barely gamed on that at all, other than X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and a couple D&D games. Then I got my Jaguar in 1995 and my first real gaming PC in 2003. You know the story from there.

I'm wondering what kind of exposure you had for Western systems that you didn't own. We're around the same age so I'm kind of surprised at your lack of C64 exposure. I knew tons of kids in the '80s with them. And before the NES, pretty much all the consoles in NA were Western (and a lot of big arcade games). Besides owning a 2600 did you get to try other people's Intellivisions and ColecoVisions? Those were fairly popular for a short time. I guess I'm surprised because those who associate quality '80s gaming almost entirely with Japan tend to be younger, having started with Nintendo or Sega. Gamers our age tend to have at least a few years of being exposed to a more Westernized marketplace and have a good amount of attachment to it even if most of us couldn't afford to have several systems back then.

I'm 32. I knew no one who gamed on computers when I was a kid. Everyone had ataris, intellivisions, or nintendos. Except me. I had MASTER SYSTEM!

I had almost no exposure to C64, Colecovision, or Intellivision. To be honest, until about 1987 I played mostly outside. The NES and SMS split time with baseball and street hockey. I probably played the most games during the 16-bit era, as I was in middle school and high school, had a job, and had zero expenses. I also played a ton during the 32-bit era in college. That was also when I finally got my first Neo Geo. I would say that since college, I have bought a lot more but played a lot less, which is just as stupid as it sounds, when I look at it objectively.
